1 Lecture 8 Florence and the Medici

2 Florence Oligarchic republic controlled by the Medici family from : Medici expelled from Florence following the invasion of Charles VIII of France 1513: Pope Leo X installs his nephews Giulio (later Pope Clement VII) and Giuliano as rulers of Florence. 1527: Death of Clement VII; popular uprising expelled the Medici 1530: reinstalled by Emperor Charles V s armies.

3 Terms Mannerism: modern stylistic term used to characterize Italian art from late 1510s through the end of the century; characterized by an emphasis on artifice. Paragone: Italian for comparison. Academy: a society or institution of distinguished scholars, artists, or scientists, that aims to promote and maintain standards in its particular field, often through education and training.
