1 Sharon Burgess Primary Schools Music Festival Support Service 28 Hay Street, Klemzig 5087 Ph: Mob: Fax: Website: ORCHESTRA AUDITION INFORMATION Open to DECD school students in years 4 to 8 (in 2014) for the PRIMARY SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA In ALL DECD SCHOOLS 8 th September 2014 The Festival of Music for 2015 will be held from 8 th to 18 th September in the Adelaide Festival Theatre. Three orchestras consisting of approximately 30 public school students will be formed to accompany the choir and perform featured orchestral items. Each orchestra is made up of a string section, a wind section and a rhythm section and rehearse at one of three locations, across the Metropolitan area. Please read the Audition times, locations and requirements carefully. BRIEF Summary of the commitments for the Festival Season: (please note: dates are not confirmed) Term One: Weekly rehearsals commence Week 7 on Thursdays from 4:15 5:45pm NO rehearsals in school holidays - Compulsory ½ Day Workshops (may occur in Term 1 or Term 2) Term Two: Weekly rehearsals Compulsory One day Workshop (early in Term 2) including a Compulsory Parent Meeting Compulsory ½ day Workshop (late in Term 2) Term Three, Weeks 1 7: Weekly rehearsals Weeks 5&6: Rehearsals at Magic Millions Sales Auditorium, Morphettville (2 full days) Weeks 8&9: Rehearsals and Performances at Festival Theatre (4 rehearsals & 4 concerts) Other: Northern Metro and Southern Metro Music Festivals (details to be advised ASAP in 2015) Please note that from time to time extra workshops, rehearsals or venue changes may occur to further develop the students learning. These will be advised as early as possible to assist your planning. Ensemble playing requires a commitment from all members to contribute at both a musical and personal level. It is expected that students attend ALL rehearsals and performances including commitments to the Northern and Southern Metro Festivals held after the end of the Adelaide Festival series. It is possible for a student to sing in a choir, be a compere, soloist or Assisting Artist as well as play in one of the orchestras. Costs: Membership for the Festival Orchestra is free. Students are required to buy a Festival Orchestra shirt for Performances (approx. $26.50) We also offer a Jacket for approx. $40.00 this is not compulsory.

Please note: NO PERCUSSION/ RHYTHM SECTION at this venue 10:00am 5:00pm (please arrive after 9:30am Thursday, 20 November at Klemzig PSMF Office ALL INSTRUMENTS Follow the signs. 8:30am 5:00pm If your child wishes to audition on 2 instruments, 2 audition times will need to be booked. These include: Primary Schools String Orchestra (Years 5 7), Secondary Schools String Symphony (Years 8 12), Primary Schools Wind Ensemble (Years 5 7), Secondary Schools Concert Band (Years 8 12), Primary Schools Guitar Ensemble (Acoustic/ Classical Guitar), South Australian Schools Percussion Ensemble (Years 8 11), Flutes of Fleurieu (Years 5 9), The Adelaide Flute Ensemble (Years 9 12) For further information about the dates, times and requirements for these ensembles, please contact your Classroom Music Teacher, IMS teacher or the IMS North Office on
3 FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 2015 PLEASE BRING THE ATTACHED FORM, COMPLETED AND SIGNED TO THE AUDITION. An audition time MUST be booked Country students may negotiate to participate in an online audition or submit CD/ DVD recording for their audition. Please contact the Orchestra Manager Audition time is approximately 7 minutes No accompaniment is required. For Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Keyboard, Electric Guitar and Electric Bass: 1. Excerpts will be posted on the webpage ( Click on: Orchestra link on left side) on Friday 24 th October after 5:00pm for students to learn and present at the audition. Students will be required to prepare ALL excerpts for the audition. Please also download the Audition Info document as this will assist you in your preparation. 2. Students are also asked to present 1 piece of their own choice to demonstrate their ability. 3. Please see the attached sheet for the ranges and key signatures required. (Also on the website) NB: Electric Guitar and Electric Bass students need to bring their own lead and instrument. An amplifier will be provided. A digital piano (7 octaves) will be provided for keyboard (piano) students. For Percussionists: It is expected that percussionists will play the full range of general percussion and drum kit music in the repertoire 1. Excerpts will be posted on the webpage ( Click on: Orchestra link on left side on Friday 24 th October after 5:00pm for students to learn and present at the audition. Students will be required to prepare ALL excerpts for the audition. Please also download the Audition Info document as this will assist you in your preparation. 2. Students are also asked to present 1 short piece of their own choice (Percussionists: on either drum-kit, general percussion or both: could be two pieces) to demonstrate their ability. 3. Percussion students will be asked to perform a snare drum roll and a cymbal roll for 2 bars of 4/4 with three different dynamics (crescendo, diminuendo and a roll at the same dynamic level). 4. Students auditioning on drum kit will also be asked to play a Rock, Swing, Shuffle or Latin style beat to a simple CD backing. Audition time is approximately 10 minutes. A Drum kit and all required percussion equipment will be provided. The following pages list suggested ranges and other information to assist you. If you are unsure please discuss with your Instrumental Music Teacher, your Classroom Music Teacher or give me a call as soon as possible.
