1 TEACHER RESOURCES LESSON PLAN FOR GRADES 6-12 SELF-PORTRAIT PHOTO ILLUSTRATIONS Lesson Length: 3-5 sessions, depending on image complexity Materials: Copic sketchbook paper or X-Press It Blending Card Copic Sketch markers in assorted colors Colorless Blender Copies of the Color Matching Chart color photograph outlines of the photograph National Visual Arts Standards: Students apply media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks. Students select and use the qualities of structures and functions of art to improve communication of their ideas. Students compare the characteristics of works in two or more art forms that share similar subject matter, historical periods, or cultural context. Objectives: A. Students will create a self-portrait based on a photograph using Copic markers. B. Students will learn how to identify value and explore highlighting and shading in a photograph. Student Art Work: 8th Grade
2 SELF-PORTRAITS In this lesson we will create a self-portrait. Introduction: 1. Introduce students to a variety of works from portrait photographers such as Steve McCurry, Lee Jeffries, and Lisa Kristine. 2. Introduce students to a variety of selfportrait artworks by famous artists such as Picasso, Kahlo, and Rembrandt. 3. Discuss what makes these artworks special (subject matter, focus, lighting, contrast, color vs. black and white, tone). 4. Compare and contrast the subject matter, tone, and materials used. 5. Tell the students that they will be creating their own self-portrait based on a photograph. Students will be using Copic markers and should consider the concepts discussed above. Activities: Note before coloring: Keep clean scratch paper under your work at all times. Copic markers will bleed through the sketch paper. If markers bleed onto table surfaces, they can be cleaned up with hand sanitizer. Working on high-quality paper will help keep colors within lines. 1. Ask students to bring in a number of photographs of themselves in various settings. Remind students to bring photos with a clear subject (them), minimal distractions, good contrast, and interesting poses and props. 2. Students can work in groups or with the instructor to determine the best photo to use for the self-portrait project. NOTE: We recommend a 5 by 7 inch image size because you can fit two copies of the line image on one sheet of paper. Also, you can print both the original photo and the line image on one sheet. If the image is too large, it takes a long time to color; if the image is too small, the details become difficult to see. 3. Create line art from a photo Option A digital line-art image: Open Tracing Memories application and click on Take a Photo or Select a Photo. Take a Photo - Opens the camera. Take a photo and click ACCEPT or DISCARD to proceed or repeat. Select a Photo - Opens photos. Click on a photo to select it. Choose portrait or landscape layout and crop size from bottom menu bar. Click the checkmark in the upper right to process photo into line art. In line art mode, select the following options from the menu bar: Crop - Return to crop screen Rotate - Rotate image 90 degrees Line detail - Use the slider bar for more or less detail.* Contrast - Use slider bar for more or less contrast.* Eraser - Use slider bar to change the eraser size. Touch the screen to activate and move eraser.* *Click on the checkmark in the upper right to proceed at each step. Click on SHARE and pick a location to share, save, or print the line art image. 3 Option B hand-traced, line-art image: Using a light table or tracing paper, have students trace the main outlines of any high-contrast image. Instruct them to focus on prominent lines and to not get hung up on details. Students can scan and resize as necessary. Have students photocopy the outlines onto Copic marker compatible paper. 4. Have students place vellum or tracing paper over their printed photograph. This helps to identify the light source and areas of contrast. Students should take note of highlights and shadows. 5. Hand out the Copic marker sets and copies of the Color Matching Chart. (Prep this by printing the blank chart on a sturdy piece of uncoated paper. Fill in the chart using the colors from the Copic marker sets. Record each color number and punch a hole in the center of each as shown.) 6. Have students hold the Color Matching Chart over their photograph to help isolate colors and identify close matches. (This project can also be done as a value study using only a gray scale or limited color palette.) 7. If necessary, review Copic coloring and blending techniques with students. 8. Give students the remaining time to color their self-portrait line image with Copic markers. Remind students to work from light to dark and that they can layer colors to create intermediate values. Encourage students to write down the colors used so they can come back later and continue working. Use the Colorless Blender to erase mistakes or to lighten areas.
