1 Early Years Foundation Stage Newsletter 1 Name: Dear Parents, May we take this opportunity to welcome all the children who have joined us in the Foundation Stage this year. All the children look very smart in their school uniform. Thank you for your support. At the beginning of each term the children will bring a newsletter outlining the activities and topics that they will be introduced to. This term we will be finding out all about the children and during the term the children will be involved in. Discussions about families and homes. Creating pictures of family and friends.. Thinking of ways to keep healthy and safe. Using our senses to understand and explore the school environment, Learning about a variety of Christian festivals: Harvest Festival and Christmas. Listening and enjoying a whole variety of stories. Communication, Language & Literacy (CLL) In addition to the above areas of study, the children will begin to learn letters of the alphabet. They will be introduced to the letters and sounds of the alphabet through Read, Write, Inc. As the children progress through the letters of the alphabet, they will also learn the correct formation and pronunciation of the letters. Parents can access the website to hear the correct phonic pronunciation in order to support the children with their phonics. The children will

2 also be involved in a whole variety of activities to develop their speaking and listening skills. These will be on going throughout the school day. The children will bring a reading book home on a regular basis. We like to familiarise the children with reading a book before they bring the Oxford Reading Scheme books home so, initially, the children will bring home either picture books or library books to encourage them to retell the stories and pick out information within the illustrations. If they choose to bring home a library book please read the book to your child, enjoying the story together. At this stage the children will not be expected to read the book to you. It is essential they gain the love of stories and books by listening and responding to a story. Once the children start to bring home scheme books these will contain familiar characters and will introduce key words and gradually contain longer text with more complex sentences. Over the year, the children will bring home word lists to practise reading at home. There will be two lists, the green list contains phonetically decodable words and the red list contains tricky words that the children need to be able to read on sight. The children will also bring home a Reading diary, which is filled in every time your child reads at school and at home. Parents are encouraged to comment in the reading diaries whenever their child reads at home as this is an informal way of keeping in contact with parents and a very good way to communicate any problems that might arise. This will also indicate whether your child s book needs to be changed for a new one. Taking time to read regularly at home and helping your child to learn letter names and sounds is an essential part of your child s early education and we value your support. Please sign your child s diary as their reading books will not be changed without a signature. Mathematics The children will carry out many practical activities this term encouraging them to recite, recognise and count out numbers to 10. The numbers are introduced on a weekly basis over the term to ensure the children are confident with the numbers and are able to recognise them instantly and write them correctly. They will also be introduced to the concept of more than and have practical experience of addition. There will also be opportunities to solve practical problems in every day situations. There are lots of examples of how to help the children with early mathematical concepts in the Pre-school booklet that was handed out during the information evening. Alongside the literacy home learning the children will also begin to bring home maths that will be handed out on a Friday and collected in on a Tuesday.

3 PE Each week the children will take part in PE sessions. Over the first two terms the children will be taking part in games and dance/drama sessions in the hall. Our PE sessions will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. All activities are planned to develop the children s coordination and spatial awareness. The children enjoy the dance sessions, helping to bring out their more imaginative and creative side! The PE kit consists of a white shirt and navy shorts for indoor games. As with all the school uniform, please ensure that your child s PE kit is clearly named. Photographs On Friday 18 th September, the Free press are coming into school to take photographs of the Reception children for their Class of 2015 article. This will be published in the paper in a few weeks time. The photographs will be available to order directly from the newspaper. If any parent does not want their child s picture (and name) in the paper please let the school know. (This should have been declared on one of the forms given out during the induction evening) Milk and snacks Every day the children have a piece of fruit for their snack during the morning. The fruit is delivered to the school and usually consists of apples, pears, oranges or bananas. The Reception children also have a drink of milk every day, which they enjoy during a story. This is free to all children in their first term and continues until the term after the children turn 5. Colouring books During the winter months, the children are often unable to go outside at playtimes. We would like the children to bring in a named colouring book that they can keep in their trays. They will be able to use these during wet play times. Water As part of our Healthy Schools Scheme, the children are encouraged to bring an extra drink of water (no fruit juices, flavoured water or fizzy drinks please) to drink throughout the day. Although the children have a drink in their lunchboxes, we feel that it is important that they have access to water throughout the day. Please ensure that all water bottles are clearly named. There is an area in the classroom that the children can place their bottles in when they arrive in the mornings. Coming to school Each year the arrangements for dropping off and collecting the Reception children are slightly different from the older children. Arrangements for dropping and collecting the children from school are in the blue information book given out on the induction evening.

4 Naming items PLEASE, PLEASE check that you have named your entire child s uniform. There are 60 children in Reception this year with jumpers all of the same design and nearly all the same size. We wouldn t want to muddle the children s uniform up as they do look very smart. PE kits often come into school unnamed and the children, at this stage, don t recognise which kit belongs to them. Also, lunch boxes need to be clearly named as we do have lots of children with the same boxes Thank you. Lunches As the children will be attending half days for the first few days, the children will not be able to have hot dinners during this time. If you would like your child to begin having hot dinners from the third week, please see Mrs Scupham in the main office if you are having problems accessing the Farm Food website. If your child is going to continue having a packed lunch please do not pack too much food in his/her box as it can be quite daunting if they have a lot of food and they often don t know where to start. Please monitor how much your child is eating / bringing home so that you know that they are not overwhelmed by the amount of food. We will also monitor the children in school and inform you if there is a problem. Parent Helpers We would like to welcome any parents/grand parents who are keen to help out in school in any way. We are always looking for people to hear readers or to help with art & craft There are certain forms and DBS checks to carry out prior to coming into school but once they are clear we would love you to come in and help. Please pop into the class to have a chat if you would like to help. Teaching Assistants Mrs Boekestyn, Mrs Clarkson and Mrs Kirlew will be working with the children in Class 1 and 2 as their Teaching Assistants this year. If you ever have any worries or queries please come in and have a chat with a member of the team. Junk modelling We have a design & make area in the classroom whereby the children can go and make models using a whole variety of junk materials. Please could you send in empty boxes such as egg boxes, cereal boxes, plastic trays, tubes, foil trays etc. Kitchen roll tubes are very popular for making rockets and alike so these would be greatly received (no toilet rolls thank you). Outside Area The children will have access to our lovely outside area on a daily basis. There is a huge choice of activities for them to do ranging from painting, making mud pies or exploring soap flakes. We would like to apologise in advance if the children come home a little messier than they come into school. We do use aprons and protective clothing but sometimes this isn t quite enough to keep the children clean and tidy but we do have fun exploring!! Thank you for your understanding in advance.
