2 2014 Graduate Summer and Fall Calendar and Registration Information Scheduling Graduate students who have been accepted into a program should meet with their adviser, prior to the start of scheduling, to plan their course work for the upcoming session. Beginning Sunday, March 2, 2014, matriculated students currently in a graduate program may schedule online using their mywcu account. Students who have not been formally accepted into a graduate program (nondegree students) may schedule by completing an online scheduling form, found at beginning March 17, The summer/fall 2014 graduate course schedule is available on mywcu and the Graduate Studies homepage ( Students must pay University bills in full and clear all holds before they are eligible to schedule (tuition, housing, meals, bookstore, library, and parking tickets). Students can use mywcu to check for existing holds. The University/department reserves the right to drop from the class roster any student who schedules for course work without appropriate prerequisites or approvals. New Student Account Information A student s West Chester University Account serves four main purposes: Access to the student administration system (mywcu) mywcu is used to access student information, grading, and class scheduling Access to WCU (webmail) Access to D2L which is used by instructors to post course materials, tests, quizzes, and surveys, as well as hold online discussions Access to log onto the University network Before new students can use their WCU account for any of the above services, they must first initialize their password. To initialize a password, please follow these instructions: 1. In the browser type 2. Next to the login box, click on the link labeled Change Password. Enter a username (usernames are the first letter of the student s first name and the first letter of the last name followed by the student s six-digit WCU ID number). An example of this is BE123456@wcupa.edu. For those who have never logged into the system before, the Old Password is WCU-MMDDYY. With the old password, students should be sure to capitalize the WCU and recognize that the MMDDYY is a representation of their birth date. An example of this is January 1, 1984 = WCU Students will enter a new password which is at least eight characters in length and includes at least three of the following requirements, type that password again to confirm, and click Change Password/Passphrase. Lowercase character Uppercase character Numeric character Special character such as # $ * Note: Students may not use any part of their name in their new password. For security reasons, students will be prompted to configure the self-service online password reset tool. Setting up this tool will enable students to reset their password at anytime. They will click Submit after completing their questions and answers. This new password is good for 90 days. Continuous Registration Reminder All students who have been admitted to a graduate program must maintain continuous registration each fall and spring semester. Students not enrolling in a course must request a leave of absence. Forms are available at click on Graduate Studies forms. Students must register for continuous enrollment (GSR 799) if they have an IP or NG to finish and do not have any other course work to complete. Students also are eligible for GSR 799 if they are taking comprehensive exams. Students must the Graduate Office and request GSR 799. Graduation Reminder The commencement ceremony for graduate students is separate from the undergraduate ceremony. The graduate ceremony is Monday, May 12, 2014 at 7 p.m. in Hollinger Field House. How It Works After completing a class at West Chester University for which students wish to receive Act 48 credit, they should log on to Edulink at Students will enter the information about the class as directed. The WCU Office of the Registrar will verify that the hours and credits were satisfactorily completed. 5 Fees and Expenses Keep for future reference Students who schedule before late registration will receive a bill mailed to their home address. Students receive only one bill. If any changes are made to the schedule after the bill is sent, students must contact the Office of the Bursar for any updated charges. Or, they can review their charges on mywcu. The deadline for returning materials with payment is printed on the bill. All fees are subject to change by action of the Board of Governors. The University reserves the right to cancel schedules of students who do not pay or have not made arrangements for payment by their billing due date. Students scheduling during late registration period will be charged a late registration fee of $35. Tuition and fees may be paid by check, electronic check (echeck), money order, or cash. Credit card payments are accepted through the University s web-based QuikPay system (with a fee assessed for the service). Refer to the Bursar s web page for payment instructions. Refund Policy Fall 2014 Students wanting to withdraw completely from the University must submit that request in writing to the Office of Graduate Studies. A 100% refund is issued if the course is dropped or withdrawn through the sixth calendar day of the semester. After that, tuition and fees are refunded according to the schedule below. Please note that students must drop all of their classes after the 6th day to be eligible for the 80%, 60%, 50%, 40% refunds. No refund will be given if a student drops a course but retains full-time status; reduces his/her credit load after the end of the drop period but retains part-time status; or owes the University money. These percentages apply to the total tuition bill, not to partial payments of tuition. 8 Summer 2014 Workshop Descriptions COUNSELOR EDUCATION Advanced Group Counseling EDC (3 credits) CL#1929 July 1 August 1, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 4:15 7 p.m. This workshop is geared toward students and practitioners who have an interest in advancing their group counseling skills, building upon the foundational concepts of group counseling with an emphasis on group theory and skill application with live groups. This course will focus on the development and application of group skills from the design phase to implementation of a group that emphasizes developing one s personal theory of group counseling. Students will work together to create and co-facilitate groups. Group supervision of recorded sessions, as well as live observation from the instructor and peers, will be used to facilitate student learning. Plans are in progress to secure clients through on-campus clinics. Upon completion of this course, students will gain confidence in their group counseling skills and deepen their knowledge group theories and techniques. Introduction to Counseling Supervision EDC (3 credits) CL#1931 July 28 August 1, 8 a.m. 4 p.m. This workshop is designed to introduce students and practitioners to the primary theories and practice of counselor supervision models. Supervision is a key piece of counseling, and this workshop will enable students to feel confident when performing those duties. Class members will have the opportunity to understand and experience counselor supervision in both the clinical and administrative fields, as well as discuss specific ethical issues that coincide with supervision. Upon completing this workshop, class members will be able to identify which supervision model most closely aligns with their specific environment, as well as understand which techniques and modalities work best with who they are and those they are supervising. Class time will allow for members to practice skills, observe techniques, view videos, and receive supervised experience. Teaching modalities will include lecture, role-playing, case studies, small group discussion, and reflective journal writing. Crisis Intervention and Counseling Survivors of Trauma EDC (3 credits) CL#1068 August 4 8, 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. The purpose of this course is twofold and geared toward both practicing counselors and counseling students. First, participants will gain a theoretical and practical background in crisis intervention and prevention, and second, they will learn the skills and intervention techniques necessary for successfully counseling individuals who survive crises and other traumatic events. This course will allow students to learn the multiple theories of crisis intervention and trauma counseling, as well as engage these theories through hands-on, practical application. While trauma throughout the lifespan will be reviewed, specific focus will be paid to working with children, adolescents, and young adults. In this workshop format, the course will allow students to incorporate theoretical and philosophical counseling positions and begin practicing the skills to prevent and intervene in crisis situations, as well as the techniques for counseling individuals who have survived traumatic experiences. EARLY AND MIDDLE GRADES EDUCATION School Bullying: The Problem, Intervention, and Prevention EDE (3 credits) CL#1953 July 7 24, 9 a.m. 12:15 p.m. The course provides an overview of the national and international problem of bullying in schools. It explores such questions as: Why is bullying an important concern for teachers? How do we define bullying? What are the typical characteristics of bullies and victims? What is the range of possible bullying behaviors? What can teachers and administrators do to alleviate and prevent bullying and its consequences? Through readings, discussions, in-class learning activities, videos, and guest speaker presentations, participants will come to a better understanding of bullying and school violence, and explore ways educators can act to safeguard all students. The course also will examine recent media coverage, cyberbullying, related websites and organizations, and literature, including children s literature. The course contains a counseling component and explores the issues of emotions and behavior management. Examining the Achievement Gap EDE 589 (3 credits) June 26 27, July 1 3 Philadelphia Campus, 8th and Market Street This week-long seminar was created to help educators examine the achievement gap. Does the gap exist, and if so, what is it? What are the underlying causes? How do educators begin to close the gap? What does the research say? This course will explore ways to make a difference in the lives of children through culturally responsive teaching practices. This seminar is appropriate for all educators and administrators or those concerned with educating students of color and/or students from a low socioeconomic status. Global Perspective Workshop EDE (3 credits) CL#1062 July 31, August 1, 4, 5, 6 This workshop is designed for people who are interested in integrating the global perspective in their own teaching and/or in their school curriculum. It is also for those who are interested in developing their personal global awareness in today s interdependent world. Instruction for this hybrid workshop will be a combination of online and WCU campus classes. HEALTH Special Topics: Health Counseling and Health Promotion HEA 435/ (3 credits) CL#1978 May 14, 15, 19, 20, 4 p.m. 11 p.m.; May 16, 8 a.m. 5 p.m. (Friday); May 17 (Saturday), 10 a.m. 3 p.m. (online class) This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the theory and Summer Fall West Chester University

9 practice of health counseling in health promotion programs and settings, with specific applications to common health problems. The theoretical framework for the practice of health promotion/ counseling is based on Ivey s Microskills model, a psycho-educational approach that breaks counseling into discrete skills which can be mastered and applied easily. How to facilitate small groups in a public health setting will be explored, as well as the structure and function of small group work. This course is intended for those who plan to work with individuals and/ or groups in health promotion practice. Special Topics: Advanced Biostatistical Methods HEA (3 credits) CL #1979 May 28 June 25, Monday/Wednesday, 4:15 8:45 p.m. This course gives students an opportunity to evaluate health-related research questions by completing an epidemiologic study and producing a draft manuscript. Statistical methods to be covered in the course include multiple linear regression, logistic regression, and the analysis of a commonly used program evaluation design (i.e., pretest-posttest comparison/control group design). The purpose of this course is (1) to apply epidemiologic and biostatistical skills for designing and analyzing epidemiologic studies and program designs, (2) to gain skills by working effectively with others as team members, and (3) to gain skills by presenting study results orally and in writing. During the five-week course, students will complete three problem sets as well as write and present a brief manuscript that will include introductory, methods, results, and discussion sections. All analyses will be conducted with SPSS syntax. The prerequisite for this course includes a B or better in HEA 526 (Biostatistics in Public Health). Special Topics: Adolescent Health Issues Challenges and Opportunities HEA 435/ (3 credits) CL#1979 July 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 8 a.m. 5 p.m. Adolescence is a period for personality development and experimentation that might include health-related risk behaviors. An overview of adolescent development will provide the foundation for this course. Thereafter, this course will offer an overview of adolescent healthrisk behaviors that result in major public health issues such as intentional and unintentional injuries, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, alcohol and other substance abuse, mental health conditions, distorted body image, and other conditions. Prevalence and trends of various health conditions, along with their underlying causes, will be examined. Policies, programs, and services for adolescents will be highlighted as well as the role of prevention in addressing adolescent health issues. An evidence-based approach to addressing adolescent health issues will be emphasized. All participants are expected to be actively involved in the learning process. All majors are welcome. Seminar on Current Issues in Global Health and Development HEA 435/ (3 credits) CL#2043 July 23, 24, 25, 28, 29, 8 a.m. 5 p.m. This seminar will challenge participants to think out-of-the-box in critiquing current issues in global health in the context of overall development in resourcepoor settings. Historical perspectives will pave the way for understanding the present-day challenges. The common core standards that address reading, comprehension, and social studies can be found in the heart of these songs. Throughout the course, participants will split into beginner and intermediate level groups to address appropriate guitar instruction. Disagreements over diagnosis and interventions have led to confusion over the way in which teachers and counselors should approach management of this disorder.
