19 MCS Heat Pump Installer Standard (MIS 3005 v3.1a) MCS heat pump installation companies must comply A new version from 1 st March, 2012 Key changes affecting AWHP installers: a. Heat loss calculations should comply with BS EN b. Heat pumps must provide 100% of the peak heating load as calculated at a specified external air temperature based on CIBSE data. > Electric back-up heaters can only be used below this temperature c. Bivalent systems are allowed if the heat pump cannot meet 100% of the peak heating load, provided the other heat source is not electric heating d. The Heat Emitter Guide must be shown to customers and the heat pump installer must liaise with designer/installer of the Heat Emitters

20 Installer competency MCS Accredited To ensure homeowners can apply for future grants, the installer must be MCS accredited Planning Permission Ensure the installation meets requirements of local regulations Refrigeration installation If handling refrigerants or installing refrigerant pipework, the engineer must hold City & Guilds 2079 certificate Hot water installation Installers must hold a G3 certificate when installing unvented systems Hot water systems are controlled services and must be notified Electrical Installation All electrical work must comply with Wiring Regulations 17 th Edition The engineer must be a fully qualified electrician (Part P) Working At Heights Directive Installers must ensure that they are suitably trained and comply with the directive

21 Installation of outdoor unit considerations Ease of access for maintenance Site the unit safely Ensure sufficient room to remove the compressor if necessary Ensure sufficient space to clean the unit Ensure adequate air flow around the unit Consider risk of snow build-up Ensure the discharge air route is acceptable, does it annoy the neighbours? 22 Coefficient of performance (COP) Coefficient of Performance is a measure of the efficiency of a heat pump COP = Delivered heat energy Electrical input to compressor Important notes about COP Varies depending on operating conditions ambient air temperature, and design flow temperature COP decreases with increasing flow temperature Use the right dimensioned heat emitter to maximise efficiency The international standard for measuring heat pumps is EN14511
