1 Unit Name: Fractions Subject/Topic Area(s): Math Grade Level: 6th Time Frame: 2 weeks Class Description/Developmental Needs of Students: This class consists of 21 girls and 7 boys. This class social and enjoys opportunities to work with eachother. The students are proficient in the subject and move through material at a quick pace. 3 students are advanced and receive enriched assignments. STAGE ONE: DESIRED RESULTS ESTABLISHED GOALS (State and/or National Content Standard (s)): G Standard 6.NS The Number System NS1 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. NS2 Compute fluently with multidigit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Standard 6.AF Algebra and Functions AF1 Students write verbal expressions and sentences as algebraic expressions and equations; they evaluate algebraic expressions, solve simple linear equations, and graph and interpret their results: UNDERSTANDINGS: U Students will understand that fractions can be simplified using the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator, and by using prime factorization. Students will learn to express fractions as decimals that terminate or repeat. In addition, students will learn to convert fractions to decimals and percents and vice versa. The students will use the least common denominator of a set of fractions to compare and order fractions and other rational numbers. Students will apply their fraction skills by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: Q How do you simplify fractions? How are fractions, decimals, and percent related? What are factors? Multiples? What are GCF and LCM and how do you use them? How to you estimate using fractions? How do you operate arithmetically using fractions and mixed numbers? 1
2 KNOWLEDGE: K Students will know: Key terms equivalent fractions, percent, ratio, simplest form, greatest common factor (GCF), least common multiple (LCM), compatible numbers, similar fractions, reciprocal. The difference between factors and multiples. That fractions represent division. How to represent a fraction as a decimal and percent. SKILLS: S Students will be able to: Simplify fractions using GCF and prime factorization. Express fractions as decimals that either terminate or repeat. Convert fractions to decimals and percents, and vice versa. Compare and order fractions using LCD. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. 2
3 STAGE TWO: ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE PERFORMANCE TASKS (STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE STANDARD BY): T Projects Sieve of Eratosthenese Activities Factor Game Fraction Quilt Chapter 4 Test and Unit Test Tests are used as summative assessments to measure students overall understanding of concepts covered. Students demonstrate understanding through skills gained during unit. OTHER EVIDENCE (FORMATIVE): OE Dailly s Each day students begin class by completing 4 warmup problems, which are focused on basic skills. Think and Discuss On most days, students will participate in group or partner discussions based on the day s topic. These discussions may include problem solving, error analysis, application, graphic/visual representation. Homework Homework assignments are designed for practice of skills learned in class. *Enriched homework includes skills practice and word problems for contextual computation. Quizzes On average, 2 quizzes per chapter will be given to to assess current understanding. Basic Skills Worksheets Basic Skills are given weekly for continued practice of prior skills learned. Inclass practice (individual and group) Students will participate, almost daily, in class practice. In class practice may include worksheets, workbook problems, online interactive. STAGE THREE: LEARNING PLAN (UNIT SEQUENCE) 3
4 LEARNING ACTIVTIES (WHERETO): L 1. Begin with an intro question, what is the greatest number that can go into 24 and 36?. H 2. Introduce essential questions. List the essential questions on the board. Using thumbs up, down or sideways have students perform a preunit assessment by using the appropriate thumb position to indicate their understanding of the concept. W,, E, E 3. Key terms will be introduced as needed with each chapter of the unit. E 4., where student work in pairs or groups to discuss and do a quick project (writeup, graphic organizer), will be dispersed throughout the unit. R, T 5. Introduce prime and composite numbers and prime factorization. Students use practice workbook for skills practice. E, R 6. Students complete the Sieve of Eratosthonese to identify all prime numbers from E, T, O 7. Students learn how to find the GCF and LCM in preparation for simplifying fractions. E 8. Play Factor Game to reinforce skills in an interactive way. E, T, O 9. Give a Quiz on prime factorization, GCF and LCM. R, E 10. Introduce fractions, decimals and percent and connect to essential question. Students will complete a fraction quilt as a project. E 11. Spend several days working with fractions, decimals and percents in various contexts (computation and word problems). R, E, R, T 12. Give Quiz on fractions, decimals and percent. Also, include a few questions about GCF, LCM and simplifying fractions. R, E 13. Make a study organizer in preparation for Chapter 4 Test. R, T 14. Students will review for the test in a whole class interactive activity. R, E, T 15. Give Chapter 4 Test as summative assessment. R 16. Students begin Chapter 5 completing a Marcy Cook estimation with fractions activity. T 17. In Chapter 5, students continue operations with fractions. Using skills learned in Ch. 4, students will continue to work with fractions. R, E, O 18. First the students will learn how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Students will use teachermade worksheets to practice concepts. R, T, O 19. Give Quiz on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. R, E 20. Students learn to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. Students will also solve equations involving fractions. E, R, T, O 21. Give Quiz on multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers, include adding and subtracting fractions. R, E 22. Give formative unit assessment. All concepts covered in unit will be addressed.
