2 In our Academy we are committed to providing a warm, caring and safe environment for all our children so that they can learn and play in a relaxed and safe environment. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school. We take all incidents of bullying seriously. Bullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect and pupils who bully others need to learn different ways of behaving. In our Academy, we acknowledge that bullying can happen from time to time indeed it would be unrealistic to claim that it does not. When bullying does occur, everyone should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively in accordance with our anti bullying policy. As a RRS (Rights Respecting School UNICEF) this upholds the following articles from the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child): UNICEF Article 19: Every child has the right to be protected from harm and to be kept safe. Aims and objectives of this Policy The aim of this policy is to try and prevent and deal with any behaviour deemed as bullying. All members of the academy have a responsibility to recognise bullying when it occurs and take appropriate action in accordance with the academy policy. This will happen in the following ways: The Academy will meet the legal requirement for all schools/academies to have an antibullying policy in place. The Academy will work closely with other professional agencies acknowledging the Academies legal duties under the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Code of Practice, July 2014 All Governors, all staff, pupils, Parents/ Carers will have an understanding of what bullying is. All Governors and all staff will know what the Academy policy on bullying is and will consistently and swiftly follow it when bullying is reported. All pupils and Parents/Carers will know what the Academy policy is and what they can do if bullying occurs. Pupils and Parents/Carers will be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported. Whole School initiatives (assemblies, celebrations and staff training etc) and proactive teaching strategies (PSHE) will be used throughout the school to reduce the opportunities for bullying to occur. A positive, caring ethos will continue to grow within the school environment ensuring that everyone can work, play and express themselves free from the fear of being bullied. 2

3 DEFINITION: Bullying can take many forms and can involve physical aggression, continuous teasing or subtle intimidation or overt behaviour and manipulation. Bullying can be: Emotional being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures), ridicule, humiliation Verbal name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, threats, teasing, making rude remarks, making fun of someone Physical pushing, kicking, hitting, pinching, throwing stones, biting, spitting, punching or any other forms of violence, taking or hiding someone s things Racist racial taunts, graffiti, gestures, making fun of culture and religion Sexual unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive or sexist comments Homophobic because of/or focusing on the issue of sexuality Online/cyber setting up hate websites, sending offensive text messages, s and abusing the victims via their mobile phones Any unfavourable or negative comments, gestures or actions made to someone relating to their disability or special educational needs. Bullying is not: It is important to understand that bullying is not the odd occasion of falling out with friends, name calling, arguments or when the occasional trick or joke is played on someone. It is bullying if it is done several times on purpose. Children sometimes fall out or say things because they are upset. When occasional problems of this kind arise it is not classed as bullying. It is an important part of children s development to learn how to deal with friendship breakdowns, the odd name calling or childish prank. We all have to learn how to deal with these situations and develop social skills to repair relationships. Where does bullying happen? It can happen anywhere in the classroom, in the corridor, in the toilets, in the playground and on the way to and from school, but schools are only legally responsible for bullying incidents which occur on the school premises. However, at our Academy, we are also concerned with our children s conduct and welfare outside school and we will do what we can to support and address any bullying issues that occur off the school premises. The following steps may be taken: Talk to the transport companies about bullying on school buses and in school Taxis Talk to the Head Teachers of other schools/academies whose children may be involved in bullying off the premises. Discuss coping strategies with parents. Talk to the children about how to handle or avoid bullying outside the Academy premises. Signs and Symptoms A child may indicate, by different signs or behaviour, that he or she is being bullied. Signs of a child who is experiencing bullying may include Distinct change in personality Sudden change in behaviour pattern Reluctance to leave adults Problems at home. These signs and behaviours could indicate other problems, but bullying should be considered a possibility and should be taken seriously and investigated as soon as possible. 3

4 The class teacher will probably be the first person to identify a problem. It is the professional duty of the class teacher to handle the child sensitively and discreetly. The class teacher should: Take the incident or report seriously Reassure the victim offering positive advice and action Keep the victim fully involved in the progress of the investigation Offer future help/counseling. The class teacher should refer to colleagues, Senior Leaders or the Executive Headteacher depending on the severity of the bullying. It is important that written records should be kept at all times. Parents should also be contacted and informed. What can you do if you are being bullied? Wherever you are in our Academy you have the right to feel safe. Nobody has the right to make you feel unhappy. If someone is bullying you it is important to remember that it is not your fault and there are people who can help you. What can you do if you see someone else being bullied? Ignoring bullying is cowardly and unfair to the victim. Staying silent means the bully has won and gives them more power. There are ways you can help without putting yourself in danger. These ways are part of your PSHE work and you will be able to discuss them with your teacher. The Rehabilitation Process When the bully has been identified he/she should be confronted and the results of their behaviour should be fully explained. The bully should see the victim s point of view. Informing parents at this stage is important, as they need to be included in the rehabilitation process. A bully should receive some form of punishment, but this should be carefully selected. Explain clearly the punishment and why it is given. Once the incident has been fully dealt with a written record should be kept. The Academy incident book should contain a brief summary. The following sanctions may be used: Apologise to the victim verbally or in writing Parents will be called into school Lose privileges Go on a behaviour report/pastoral Support Plan (See behavior, discipline and rewards policy) Publicity The Academy community should be involved in the prevention of bullying at our Academy. This Policy only works if it ensures that the whole school community understands that bullying is not tolerated and understands the steps that will be taken to both prevent and respond to bullying. It is the responsibility of: School Governors to take a lead role in monitoring and reviewing this policy. Governors, the Executive Headteacher, Senior Leaders, teaching and non- teaching staff to be aware of this policy and implement it accordingly. The Executive Headteacher to communicate the policy to the school community. Pupils to abide by the policy. 4

5 Monitoring and Evaluation of the Policy To ensure this policy is effective it will be monitored and evaluated through leadership (including governors), staff / departmental meetings, questionnaires, school council. We will review this Policy annually as well as if incidents occur that suggest the need for review. The number and frequency of bullying incidents will demonstrate whether the policy is working or not. The school uses the guidance by the DfE and the Anti-Bullying Alliance to inform its action planning to prevent and tackle bullying.
