6 FP7 FUNDING Research activities on exploration, extraction and substitution of raw materials, within the theme "Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies", represent a total European Commission grant of more than 100 million (2010 to 2013). Current work-programme 2012 identifies the topic on substitution of rare earths as particularly well suited for cooperation with Japanese and US teams. The FP7 Theme Environment (including climate change) has launched two calls on closely related topics on 'Eco-efficiency and Eco-innovation' with the EC grant of 50 million and on 'Improving resource efficiency' with an EU budget of 62 million. 26/04/2012

7 Example of granted FP7 project Next-Gen-Cat : Development of NEXT GENeration cost efficient automotive CATalysts Next-Gen-Cat targets automotive catalysts, including thermal stability, durability, capability of reuse and recovery of transition metals, low health and environmental impact and cost analysis. The impact of replacing Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) is of tremendous significance (The auto-catalyst industry uses 68% of Pt and 72% of Pd in Europe). It is estimated that the developed catalysts will reduce the catalyst cost at about 40-50%, opening the way to an efficient adaptation of nanotechnology-based catalysts in the automotive sector. Next-Gen-Cat research focuses on eco-friendly nano-structured automotive catalysts: Transition metal nano-particles to partially or completely replace the PGMs incorporated substrates, including advanced ceramics and silicon carbides effective dispersion and controllable size of the nanoparticles into substrate modified polyol process to introduce the nanoparticles on the catalyst substrate precursors increased catalytic performance, even at low temperatures ( C).

8 Projects starting now Call for proposals launched in July 2010 (WP NMP 2011) i. developing new technologies for clean intelligent mining activities (advanced underground technologies for intelligent mining and for inspection, maintenance and excavation), ii. iii. iv. eco-design for new products - and eco-efficient and cost-effective method of production, finding substitutions (Novel materials for replacement of critical materials, Platinum GE and Rare Earth) networking at MS level (research on materials science and engineering, including international cooperation)
