What if rain boots were made of paper? Would they rip when we put them on? Would they fall apart in the rain? Would our feet get wet? 3

Paper rain boots would be a problem. That s why rain boots are made of rubber. Rubber bends, so it s easy to slip rain boots on our feet. Rubber is strong, so it lasts a long time. Rubber keeps out water, so our feet stay dry. Rubber is a great material for making rain boots. Maybe we should make everything out of rubber! 4

What if pans were made of rubber? Would food bounce out onto the floor? Would the pans melt? Would our food ever get cooked? 5

Maybe rubber pans are not such a great idea! That s why pans are made of metal. Metal is usually hard and strong. Metal won t melt or burn on a stove. Metal cooks our food just right. Metal is a great material for making pans. Maybe we should make everything out of metal! 6

Designing Mixtures Why can t we make cars out of stone? Materials are the different kinds of stuff we use to make things. When we make something, we have to decide what material to use. This book shows what would happen if we made silly choices. You ll find out that some materials are good for making some things, but not so good for making other things. About the Authors Kevin Beals loves to come up with new ideas. He likes to design games, songs, science tests, and things for his house. P. David Pearson usually writes books for teachers on how to teach reading. He says writing science books for kids is more fun. Developed at Lawrence Hall of Science and the Graduate School of Education at the University of California at Berkeley Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is a collaboration of a science team led by Jacqueline Barber and a literacy team led by P. David Pearson and Gina Cervetti. > What If Rain Boots Were Made of Paper?
