Who Knew? I don t know about you, but I never really gave much thought to exercising my cat. Now that I think about it, this does seem a little odd. I walk my dogs twice a day because, well, you re supposed to walk your dogs. They need exercise! So why didn t I think my cat needs to exercise? It really didn t occur to me until I watched her waddle (ok, maybe that s a little dramatic) across the family room the other day. I said to myself, Wow, JoJo s getting fat! As I began to think about JoJo s day, it didn t take me long to figure out the most exercise she was getting was running up the stairs after me when it was feeding time. Don t get me wrong, JoJo spends a lot of time with us and she gets lots of attention. She sits on the back of my chair when I m watching TV. She sits on her cat scratcher in my office and watches all the birds and squirrels run around while I m working. She helps me with the laundry by hopping in the basket in the basement and making sure nothing falls out while we walk up 2 flights of stairs. She even sleeps on the bed with someone every night. But what she does not get is exercise. If this sounds familiar, then read on and see how you can help your cat stay fit and healthy with less than 30 minutes of exercise a day. The Benefits of Exercise We all know exercise is good. It s good for us and it s good for our animals. What you might not know is why exercise is so good for your cat. Let s make a list of the 6 most important benefits of exercise: 1. Helps maintain a healthy body weight. 2. Keeps the muscles toned and strong. 3. Keeps the mind alert and active. 4. Helps with behavioral problems. 5. Improves circulation, lung capacity and heart rate. 6. Helps with sleep (this does not appear to be a problem for JoJo) Page 3
These might seem obvious but that not does make them any less important! Regular exercise also burns nervous energy and reduces boredom for you cat. This in turn, makes them less destructive and better behaved. A happy cat is less likely to destroy your furniture than a bored cat. This makes the benefits of exercise a bonus for you as well. In addition, healthy cats obviously have less health problems. This lowers the trips to your vet which again is a win/win situation for both you and your cat. Actually, I can t really think of anything negative about exercising your cat. How Much Exercise Should My Cat Get Each Day? Most vets recommend your cat gets at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. Remember, this does not have to be all at once. Actually, it s better to exercise minutes 2 or 3 times a day if possible. This will keep your cat more active throughout the day which is the ultimate goal. Kittens need less manual exercise. They have plenty of energy and can find fun in anything. Most kittens run around for no apparent reason (at least not to us) and have no problem finding their own entertainment. This hopping, jumping, and running is a great start to a life of exercise. As a cat gets older, this spontaneous play starts to fade. That s when you need to step in and start engaging your cat in activities. The good news is most cats are easily amused. A wiggling piece of string, a large paper bag, an open box or a laundry basket all become a source of endless fun. All you have to do is keep things moving and your cat will keep you entertained while they are exercising. Page 4
Older or overweight cats may require a little more work. However, you will find the hardest part is just getting them engaged. Just like people, cats get comfortable in their sedentary ways and will probably not like you poking and prodding them at first. But don t let this initial lack of interest dissuade you from getting them engaged. Start with just 5 minutes of any activity. It may take you some time to find that one toy or trick that gets your cat up and moving, so don t get discouraged. You will find once your cat starts engaging with you, it will become easier and more fun each time. Remember the goal is for your cat to get some exercise. It s a bonus if you and your cat can have loads of fun while doing it. Can My Cat Get Enough Exercise Without Me? You may see your cat run around the house for a bit or play with their stuffed mouse for a few minutes on their own. This activity is great, though it s not nearly enough to keep your cat fit. This is where you come in. It s up to you to help your cat get the exercise they need. This is a great time to bond with your cat and have some fun. There are so many ways to get your cat moving, many of which involve little to no money or effort on your part. With a little imagination, you and your cat will be playing (exercising) in no time. What Type of Exercise is the Best? Many people ask this question. But it s similar to asking what cat food is best? That depends on whether or not your cat will eat it. The same is true for exercise. The exercise is only good if your cat will engage. When it comes to your cat, the best exercise is the one your cat engages in the most. Page 5
Exercise Activities There are so many activities your cat will enjoy I couldn t possibly list them all here. So don t look at this as a definitive list. Rather, look at this as a list of suggestions in an endless list of activities for you and your cat. Let s start with the basics. What do cat s like to do most (besides sleep)? Hunt! Hunting is a cat s natural instinct so any activity that simulates the hunt, is sure to be a winner. Try putting a little wind up mouse under a sheet. This could possibly get your cat pouncing for well over 30 minutes. If you want to go one step further, get a remote controlled mouse and let the fun begin. If you prefer the simpler approach, put a stuffed mouse (or bird or chipmunk or cricket) on the end of a string and drag it around. Another good choice to simulate hunting is the cat wand (I think you have one!). Wave is up and down, dangle it above your cat, hide it under anything and slowly pull it out. All these activities will get your cat engaged and exercising at the same time. These activities are great for the young, old, and overweight. You control the pace, so go ahead and get your cat moving! I ll admit, I don t fully understand the appeal of this one, but I do know it s a hit with most cats. Try the old beam of light. Get any laser pointer and let the fun begin. Your cat will enjoy chasing it around and trying to catch it. Apparently they think it is a little bug which we all know they love to eat. Start low with the beam and then make it hop up onto a shelf or chair. Your cat will follow, increasing their aerobic activity. Scurry it across the floor and watch your cat slide around. It s fun for you and your cat! Just one note of caution: never shine the beam directly into your cat s eyes. Page 6
Try taking a box and cutting out some holes. Put your cat in their new little cave and use your cat wand to engage them. Poke it through the hole and then pull it out. Sit back and laugh as their little paws come poking out trying to get the ends. Run it around all the sides and the top and, before you know it, you ve exercised your cat for 15 minutes. If you don t have a box, just use the laundry basket. Turn it upside down and you have a new piece of exercise equipment just for your cat. A real simple engaging activity is just a piece of balled up paper. If you have one, put one of those little balls with the bell inside in the wadded of paper. Watch your cat bat it around until the ball falls out. Then watch as they chase the ball. Wrap it up and start all over again. Take a large paper bag and put it on the floor. Watch your cat jump inside. Pull him/her out and do it again. You can also cut holes in this as well. Stick a piece of string though the hole so your cat can play with it. Hide their favorite toy under the bag and let your cat try and get it. Paper (not plastic) bags can be endless fun for everyone. Most importantly, keep the activities new and entertaining for your cat. Mix it up. Use the paper bag one day and the laser beam the next. Walk around your house and look at everything as if it could be something you could use for a new activity. There is no right or wrong way to exercise your cat (just don t overdo it). Be creative!
