1 A new superhero with strong Nigerian roots hits comic book shelves By Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on Word Count 680 Roye Okupe quit a web designing job to found comic book company YouNeek Studios. Photo: The Washington Post by Stephen Voss WASHINGTON, D.C. Roye Okupe didn't read comic books as a kid. In Lagos, Nigeria, where he grew up, there were no comic book shops. Instead, Okupe was introduced to superheroes on television, in cartoons like "Transformers" and "X-Men." So when Okupe set out to create his own Nigerian superhero, he thought he would make a cartoon, too. The idea lead Okupe on a journey. He would eventually create a new world of African superheroes. It wouldn't happen the way he planned, though. Okupe came to the United States in 2002 to study computer science at George Washington University. While he was in college, he also took a class in animation at the Art Institute of Washington. After college he got a job designing websites, and during this time he made an eight-minute animated trailer about his first superhero. The character, Wale Williams, is a young Nigerian man who puts on high-tech armor to become the African superhero E.X.O. Okupe showed his trailer to television networks and investors, but no one wanted to buy it. One movie producer told him that E.X.O. looked interesting, but he should think about changing the character's race.

2 Focusing On Comic Books "That was a down period for me. I really had to dig into believing in myself that I could actually get this done," Okupe told The Washington Post. He didn't give up, though, and he was soon inspired by another type of superhero content: live-action movies. Okupe decided to focus on comic books, which are the source material for many popular superhero movies. Okupe had never written a comic before. He sent his ideas to a few publishers but they didn't respond, so he decided to produce E.X.O. himself. In the summer of 2014, he quit his job and used his savings to open YouNeek Studios. He would use the company to produce his first comic book, "E.X.O. The Legend of Wale Williams." Okupe said that quitting his job was a scary decision, but he knew he had to do it to make his dream come true. Inspired By The City He Grew Up In Okupe hired four artists in Nigeria to help him produce his first E.X.O. comic. He only returns home to Nigeria two times a year, so he communicates with his team from his apartment in Maryland. It was important to Okupe to hire people who are familiar with Lagos, Nigeria, the city where he grew up. E.X.O.'s fictional city, Lagoon City, is based on Lagos. Okupe also wanted to prove that artists in Africa could make a great comic. He wanted the product to be as good as a comic made by publishers in the U.S. Okupe's tales are fictional, but they reflect certain elements of real life in Nigeria. The comics include Nigerian sayings, clothing and monuments. Stories about Africa often focus on war, hunger and terrorism. Though E.X.O. has some of those points, Okupe also adds more positive themes and ideas. He said that positivity is often missing in stories about Nigeria and Africa. New Comic And New Characters The first E.X.O. comic debuted on August 31, 2015, and the second arrived last week. Most comics publish monthly, but YouNeek Studios hopes to produce longer books twice a year, instead. This way, new readers won't have a hard time catching up on the story. The comics are sold online and in certain comic book shops. Okupe used both his own money and contributions from his family to pay for YouNeek Studios, and raised money online to cover the cost of printing. Now, Okupe is ready to expand the YouNeek universe with new characters. Among them are Fury, a female character in the E.X.O. books, and Malika, an African warrior queen. Another is Windmaker, a hero who controls the wind.

3 Creating superheroes is exciting, but Okupe is most proud of the diverse group of fans who read his comic. His books are sold in South America, Europe and Asia. So they're not just for Africans or African-Americans, he said. They're for anybody who wants to read a great story.
