1 Intro Nathan field the protagonist in Susan Coopers novel (The King of Shadows) has been forced too live with out his parents and has had to grow up very fast. Nat is in a company of boys that is going to perform one of Shakespeare's plays in London, but nat falls suddenly ill with a misters illness and falls into a deep sleep, Nat time warps back 400 year to the elizabethan time were he finds himself in the original globe theater with master Shakespeare. Nat is adopted by master Shakespeare to go into his home and live with him and work with him. Relationships The biggest relationship is with Master Shakespeare. Shakespeare is really nice to nat. Shakespeare takes nat out of master Burbbages house and into his lovely home. Nat works hard and Shakespeare has a really good bond with Nat. Nat has a relationship with a boy in the company called roper though they were not that good of friend at first they become quit good friends because nat saved ropers life by squeezing his stomac because he was choking on an apple and nat ended up saving roper from choking to death and roper owed nat his life. Grief and Death Grief and death some thing that nat has to put up with for the rest of his life. nat is a bit lonely in his life, his mother died when he was quit and with all the but on his father his father committed suicide. nat does not really take it well nat puts it in the back of his head and tries to for get that it happened but master Shakespeare ask what happened to his parents and nat cant handle it and bursts into tears Shakespeare talks nat through it and nat can end up talking about his parents with out busting into tears. nat has to deal with another lose near to the end of the book nat falls asleep at master shakespears house the day before the play was jew to start and has the same dream he goes up into the ear and falls back down nat is distraught when he finds himself in modern time because he would never get to see Master Shakespeare again or perform alongside him either.

3 In Susan Cooper s novel King of Shadows the reader is engaged and aware of important life questions. These questions include things like grief and death, family and other relationships and acting as an escape from reality. Grief and death is one of life s big questions that Nat goes through. Nat is lonely in his life, his mother died when he was quite young flicked me back to being a very little boy, when my mother was still alive. I couldn't remember much about her, but i did remember how safe she made me feel page 4 nat s father committed suicide because he was battling depression not having his wife around. Nat bottles his feelings up and does not like to talk about his personal life. He will walk away from every conversation where the subject of his parents could come up. It was just a joke, said Pudding-face, appalled. I didn't mean- You meant exactly what you did - plying your own little trick. We don t play tricks here, feller. Nothing is more important than the company, nothing is more impotent than the play. You betrayed a trust and I don t what you here. Out! Go pack your thinks page 5

5 The King of Shadows novel was an amazing book to read it always had something interesting I found myself not being able to but the book down. the King of Shadows had some really good strong relationships that nat had with the characters in the book. Even though lots was taken from nat a lot was given to him as well.

Nat has to deal with another loss near to the end of the book Nat falls asleep and has the same dream he goes up into the air and falls back down Nat is distraught when he finds himself in modern time because he would never get to see master Shakespeare again. 9 The Company of Boys is a group of actors that are really good friends they trust each other and are close like a family This company is a family, a big family, remember that page 3. Some boys are better friends than others. Earlier in the book they were playing a game Nat was in the middle and boys falling, waiting for the reassuring hands to save me, I found myself not saved but still falling, and I shouted in alarm and stumbled, clutching for support, opening my eyes. I caught a look of mischievous glee on the face of the pudgy boy, as he grabbed me up just before I could hit the floor. The boys in the Company have to be able to trust one another and here he betrayed that trust.
