24 Conclusions Superstorm Sandy occurred while Verdant Power was making concurrent water level and velocity measurements at RITE in the East River, providing a unique case study. With different timing, the storm could have caused even more damage due to increased water levels in specific locations in the New York City region. o At Kings Point, NY a possible increase of over 1.7 m over the actual Sandy level, would have set a new record crest by ~ 1.0 m. At Verdant s RITE Project site, the kinetic hydropower turbines and related equipment in the river would not have been damaged by Sandy s extreme water levels. Sandy actually lowered water speeds; would have reduced RITE power generation. An even more extreme storm with more perfect timing would not have significantly affected the RITE Project in terms of water levels or speeds. o o Sandy has resulted in a review of installations and operations near the water with regard to extreme storms and background sea level rise. For the commercial RITE Project, onshore equipment will be located to avoid the potential for damage from extreme storm water levels Verdant Power, Inc. 24
