1 Stitch - (Lilo s Friend) Peep Pattern Notes By theknittycat / Shar October 4, theknittycat on ravelry.com and on flickr.com patterns at As with all my patterns, this pattern is free to use for charity and gifts of love. Please do not sell it, or items made from it, for profit. Permission is given to sell items made from the pattern for charity. I do not profit from these patterns, and I ask that you don t either. This is not a complete pattern. These are the notes I made while making Stitch and, although about 90% of what I did is here, I did not complete all stitch counts and row counts. Most of Stitch is here, however, and an experienced toy knitter should be able to get a complete Stitch without too much trouble. I have gone over the instructions and cleaned them up, but the row counts for the mouth and the details of the decrease rounds, completing the head from that point are not exact. Also, the optional light blue tummy patch and dark blue tattoo patches on his back are not here. But they re pretty simply knit, and frankly I didn t do that great a job on them, so I m sure you can do better. If you re good at colorwork, (I am NOT) you might want to knit the patches in. Since I no longer have Stitch and I plan to never make another, I won t be bringing this to any further completion than I have to this point. I m just making this available in response to requests. :o) Stitches used: Other than knitting and purling, I used k2tog for decreases, and I use my favorite increase, the kinc, because it s the least visible ( knit increase also called a Lifted increase ). See Note at end for links showing how to do the kinc. I use Judy Becker s Magic Cast On for each c/o (see Notes on last page) except for the arms (instructions are given for two circular needles but you can also knit him on dpns if you really want to - in which case I suggest using 5 dpns, calling two of them ndl1, and two of them ndl2 and knitting with the fifth) Lilo s Friend Stitch Peep Pattern by Shar / theknittycat Page 1 of 5

3 15. Insert claws along edge of end of arm (3 st btwn claws). I used a crochet hook to pull one of the yarn tails between two stitches, then pulled the end of the claw through by pulling on the tail, repeat with other end of claw. Do this for each claw pair. Bind off arms (as an alternative to the following method, you can break the yarn leaving a very long tail and kitchener stitch the stitches instead, which will look neater - no seam. Then tie the yarn back on at the shoulder and continue. you will have to do the same with the opposite side, and on the other two arms.) 16. With ndl1 facing you, push arm to inside of knitting and from inside (purl side out) using 3 ndl bind off, bind off 23 st. (You can do this without turning the arm inside out, but it will leave a ridge along the top of the arm.) 17. Turn arm right-side-out, sl the st on the rt ndl to left ndl and k2tog, k acr ndl1 18. Repeat steps with ndl2 facing you. Continue torso 19. K acr to last st on ndl1, sl st, put edge st of arm on left ndl, slip the st on rt ndl back to left ndl, k2tog 20. Rpt step 19 on ndl2 21. On ndl1 only: K6, attach deep pink yarn, K across 32st, turn needle (at this point you will be knitting back and forth on one circular needle, instead of in the round on two): 7. p32 across back of ndl1, turn needle 8. K across, turn needle 9. P across, turn needle 10. K2tog, k to last 2 st, k2 tog 11. P acr ***sorry the notes for his head are not complete from this point. The numbers are approximate. Knit the pink portion to the depth that you want the mouth to push into the face, decreasing the sides to make a wedge, then repeat these stitches in reverse in the black yarn for the roof of the mouth. It is not crucial to be exact here as this will be pushed inside the knitting. *** 12. Knit in stockinette on ndl1 for 4 rows 13. continuing in stockinette, decrease one st at each side of every knit row (no decreases on purl rows) till you get down to 16 st. 14. Change to black yarn and continue in stockinette on ndl1, increasing one st at each side of every knit row till you get up to 36 st. 15. Continue in stockinette till pink side and black side are the same length. End with purl across the back. 16. Changing back to med. blue yarn (it should be waiting in position at the right side of the mouth flap), k6 (to end of ndl1). 17. K arnd 3 times 18. K to last 6 st on ndl1 19. 4 ***sorry the following portion is not exact. Knit around till you get near the height you want the head to be. Then decrease evenly around in the same way as if you were decreasing a ball.*** 20. K arnd?x (approximately 12x) 21. Decrease 6 st every other round down to 12 st 22. Kitchener st closed or use your preferred method of closing. Stuffing When stuffing the head put plenty under the tongue. Push the mouth flap towards the top of the head. After closing up the top of the head, I ran yarn through the back of the mouth and pulled it up through the top of the head, anchoring it in the same way as described below If necessary, do this more than once. Nose Make a 36 st circumference ball in dark blue. (For instructions to make the balls I mention, please see notes at end.) Do not stuff too full so you can push in the nostrils. Needle sculpt nostrils. Run a length of yarn through a few stitches where you want the nostril. Thread each end of the yarn out through the opposite side of the ball, coming out at two different places Thread one end over to the same hole as the other. Pull on them to pull in the nostril. Tie together in a knot and weave in ends. Repeat for other nostril. (see my yarn knot eyes tutorial for photos of doing this tie off) 6. Roll the bottom (wider) end into a tube and stitch. Sew this end to head. Sew part way up the head so the ears will stand up. Teeth Two strips knit in the round. (could probably be done as shaped I-cord but would be less neat): starting at one end & knit sideways 8 teeth top & 8 teeth bottom (Do all increases and decreases on the same side of your knitting. This end will become the bottom of the tooth.) 1. Co 2 on ea ndl 2. K arnd 2x 3. Inc to 3 st on ea ndl 4. Inc to 4 st on ea ndl 5. Inc to 5 st on ea ndl 6. Dec to 4 st on ea ndl 7. Dec to 3 st on ea ndl 8. Dec to 2 st on ea ndl (tooth 1 complete) 9. Dec to 1 st on ea ndl 10. K arnd (2 st) (space between tooth 1 and 2) 11. Inc to 2 st on ea ndl 12. Rpt steps 3-11 (tooth 2) 13. Rpt steps K arnd (10 st) 15. Rpt steps 6-11 (tooth 3) 16. (Rpt steps 3-4 & 7-11) 2x (tooth 4&5) 17. Rpt steps (tooth 6) 18. (Rpt steps 3-11) 2x (tooth 7&8) Make 2 the same and stitch into mouth (I used kitchener stitch - grafting) Ears (knitting flat, cast on 24 st for the medium blue side and 18 st for the light pink side. St st knit rectangle, tapered at top. Sew together at sides with blue overlapping pink. Fold into a loop at bottom and sew to head) 5" tall (head is 4") 1. C/o 18st for the pink side and 24 st for the blue side, knitting flat with one circ (or 2 straight ndls if you prefer). 2. Stst for 4.5" (prox 36 rows) 3. Begin tapering top by doing a dec (k2tog) at each end of every knit row) 4. Cast off when you reach 5 or 6 st. 5. sew sides together (right side out, wrapping the blue end over the pink so the blue edges will show from the front. Lilo s Friend Stitch Peep Pattern by Shar / theknittycat Page 4 of 5 I felt there should be some overlap of his blue lip onto his teeth so I went around his mouth, pulling the blue fabric over the teeth and stitching it down.

5 Eyes Extra large coat buttons (faceted plastic) Or knit flattened black balls (the shiny plastic eyes look better but if you can't get them you can do this) 3D Round disk black inner eyes (pupils): 1. make two 36 st diam balls with tiny bit of stuffing (only 2 rnds plain knit between increases and decreases). 2. Flatten the balls and stitch in a few places if necessary to keep flat. Light Blue Disk background for eyes (another flattened ball): 1. With lt blue begin 54 st ball. 2. Incr 6 st every other round till you reach 54 st. 3. K arnd with drk blue 4. P arnd Change back to lt blue 5. (K2tog, k7) arnd (48st) 6. Decrease 6 st every other round down to 6st & kitchener st closed Sew blue eye background patches to face, close to nose. Sew black circle or button to lower edge of blue circle. Sew eyebrows to top of patch. Sew legs to bottom of torso securely. Stitch is born! NOTES: Judy Becker s Magic Cast On I use this fabulous cast on for all of my in-the-round knitting. There are many tutorials on the net for it, including these two videos: and this pictorial: es/magic-cast-on/magic-cast-on-2 alternative cast on This does not have as beautiful a finish as Judy s but if you don t want to take the time to learn hers you can do this simple cast on: 1. cable cast on 3 st on one circ. 2. p/u 3 st from the c/o edge on the second circ Making any size ball: To make any size ball with a stitch circumference a multiple of 6 - cast on 6 stitches: 1. increase in every stitch 2. increase 6 stitches, evenly spaced, every other round, till you reach the circumference you need. Formula is (inc, kx) around, where x= the number of stitches now on needles / 6 ie: 24 st on needles / 6 = 4 so that becomes (inc, k4) around. the next round will be increased by 6 so it will be 30/6 =5 and becomes (inc, k5) around. and so on 3. Knit plain the number of rounds that is equal to 1/6 of the number of stitches around (if your ball is 24 st around, 24/6=4, so you knit 4 plain rounds. If your ball is 54 st around, 54/6= 9, so you knit 9 plain rounds) 4. decrease 6 stitches, evenly spaced, every other round till you get back down to 6 stitches Formula is (k2tog, kx) around, where x = ( (the number of stitches now on needles / 6) -2) ie: ((24 st on needles / 6 ) -2) = 2 so (k2tog, k2) around 5. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. 6. Kitchener stitch closed, or weave through remaining 6 st and pull yarn to close hole. how to do the kinc (also called a Lifted increase ): You can see a video of the stitch here scroll about halfway down the page for increasing in the right side of the stitch, where she calls it a KRL ( Knit Right Loop, and KLL for the left side of the stitch). another video here: Kg&feature=related where it's called a "lifted increase" L1R or L1L (left or right) And a video showing the left and right "lifted" or "raised" increase here: A photo tutorial here: _to_knit_lifted_increases.aspx with some very nice clear photos of this increase (she calls it RL1 - Right Lifted increase) Lilo s Friend Stitch Peep Pattern by Shar / theknittycat Page 5 of 5
