2 Thank you for purchasing Qwizdom Remotes. Now that you ve received your set, you re probably thinking, What do I do now? We have prepared this quick-start guide to help you get up and running with your remotes as soon as possible. Over the next few pages, Qwizdom will take you through a step-by-step process, from installing the software to running a presentation. 4 1 CHECKING THE REMOTE SET You should have the following items: Q5 or Q7 Instructor Device Qwizdom Remotes USB Host Actionpoint Software Batteries, Screws, and Screwdriver
5 2 INSTALLING QWIZDOM ACTIONPOINT Insert the Actionpoint CD-ROM into your computer. The install wizard will start. If the CD does not AutoPlay, access the Actionpoint disc via Start > (My) Computer, and run setup.exe. If upgrading, we recommend you uninstall any previous versions of Actionpoint before continuing. If you have downloaded Actionpoint, extract the files from the ZIP file before attempting to install. Right-click the ZIP file, and select Extract All to extract the files to a new folder. Run setup.exe to install. The installer will check if your computer meets the minimum requirements, and automatically installs necessary components if required. Follow the steps to install the software:
6 Installing the USB Host 1. Plug the USB Host into an available USB port on the computer. 2. The computer will automatically detect and configure the new hardware device. This may take a few minutes to complete. 3. The host will flash green when ready for communication.
7 3 OPENING ACTIONPOINT Actionpoint is an add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 and above. When Actionpoint is loaded, you will be presented with a normal PowerPoint window. To open Actionpoint, double-click the Actionpoint shortcut icon on your desktop. Alternatively, load PowerPoint in the normal way. If using Office 2003, the Actionpoint controls will appear as an additional toolbar. In Office 2007 and Office 2010, the Actionpoint toolbar will be located in the Qwizdom Actionpoint tab.
8 4 THE ACTIONPOINT TOOLBAR (OFFICE 2003) Start Presentation: Click this button to access presentation setup options and to run the presentation. 2 Insert Slide: Use this feature to add slides to your presentation. 3 Question: If you are editing an existing PowerPoint presentation, use this option to select the question type appropriate to the slide. 4 Type: Set your question type and limits using this feature. 5 Answer: Designate an answer using this field. If entering a custom answer, press return on the keyboard to save. 6 Question Properties: Set advanced question properties (Q6/Q-VR only see full user guide for more information). 7 Points: Allocate points to each of the questions. If entering points, press return on the keyboard to save. 8 Timer: Indicate whether a question has a time limit. If entering a time press return on the keyboard to save. 9 a) Remote Configuration Settings: Set up your remotes for first-time use (not required for subsequent use). b) Participant Wizard: Create and modify participant lists. c) Reporting Wizard: Open this wizard to browse for and view existing reports. d) Tools e) Help/About: View version details and access the full user guide.
9 THE ACTIONPOINT TOOLBAR (OFFICE 2007 / 2010) 1 2 3/4/ Insert Slide: Use this feature to add slides to your presentation. 2 Question Type: Set your question type and limits using this feature. 3 Answer: Designate an answer using this field. If entering a custom answer, press return on the keyboard to save. 4 Points: Allocate points to each of the questions. If entering points, press return on the keyboard to save. 5 Timer: Indicate whether a question has a time limit. If entering a time press return on the keyboard to save. 6 Question Properties: Set advanced question properties (Q6/Q-VR only see full user guide for more information). 7 Start Presentation: Click this button to access presentation setup options and to run the presentation. 8 Advanced Session: Resume a previous presentation or begin in self-paced mode. 9 Participants Management: Create and modify participant lists.
10 10 Report Generator: Browse for and view existing reports. 11 Remote Configuration: Set up your remotes for first-time use (not required for subsequent use). 12 Qwizdom Tools: Merge results files, edit speaker notes (Q7), set up Quandary game options, and print a question overview. 13 Help/About: View version details and access the full user guide.
11 5 SETTING UP REMOTES If setting up remotes for the first time we recommend the following steps. Note: You will only have to do this once. 1. Click the Remote Configuration Settings button on the Actionpoint toolbar. or 2. Type in the number of remotes in your set(s). 3. Select only the remote types you will be using. This disables any unsupported question types for your remotes from the Insert Slide button. 4. Select your preferred configuration. Use Fixed Set unless the remotes are participant-owned. In the same window, click Assign to check that your remotes are configured to the host correctly.
12 NOTE: We always send out your remotes pre-configured to the USB Host, but this step can also be useful for troubleshooting purposes if you find that the remotes do not connect during future use. 1. Select your USB Host from the drop-down. 2. The Session ID field will automatically populate. This is the unique 6-digit identifier of your Host. 3. Click Start, and begin turning on your remotes. 4. If your remotes connect, they will be assigned an ID and an image will appear in the Remote Assignment Window. 5. If your remotes do not connect, they are not configured with the correct Session ID. Please refer to the full user guide on how to change Session IDs. 6. Click Stop, then OK when you are finished. Your remotes will turn off automatically.
13 6 CREATING A PRESENTATION In this example, we are going to begin with a Multiple Choice question with three possible answers: 1. Click the Insert Slide button. 2. Select Multiple Choice, and click 3 Choice. 3. A Multiple Choice slide template is automatically created. 4. Type in the question/statement and three possible answers. Office 2003 Office 2007/2010
14 Note that the Actionpoint toolbar now shows the question type and slide type. 1. Select the answer from the Answer drop-down menu*. 2. For questions without a correct or specific answer, leave this as none. Office 2003 Office 2007 / If the drop-down menu is blank, type your answer into the answer field and press return on the keyboard to save. Alternatively, use the Question Properties screen to set your answer.
15 If using Q6 remotes, question and answer text can be viewed on the Q6 screen. To do this, follow the instructions below. Click the yellow pencil on the Actionpoint toolbar to access the Question Properties. 1. Choose the Send Question Text and Send Answer Choices options if you would like the text to appear on the Q6 remotes. 2. Answers can also be assigned custom points. 3. Note that some answers may appear as partial in the reporting tools if the maximum score for the question was not attained. Please refer to the full user guide for a full breakdown of all question types.
16 7 PRESENTING To begin the presentation, click Presentation Setup. The Presentation Settings window will open. Office 2003 Office 2007/ Using the dropdown menus, set the Participant List to Anonymous and specify a location to save the results file. 2. Click the Login Tab. If your USB host is connected you will see a 6 digit Session ID. (If this is blank or you see QVR only, close presentation setup, check the USB host is connected, and reopen the presentation setup screen.) 3. Click OK.
17 For further information on building and importing participant lists, presenting with Qwizdom games, QVR (Qwizdom Virtual Remote), and in-presentation graphs, please see the full user guide. You are now ready to start asking questions! Using PowerPoint s inbuilt features, presentations can be customized with images and different styles, as shown below. 1. Ask participants to turn on their remotes. 2. Use the right/left directional arrows or scroll on your instructor device to navigate through the slides. 3. To display response graphs to students, press on your Q5 instructor remote or the icon on the Q7. Press again to hide the graph. 4. When the presentation has finished, the remotes will automatically switch off. Your report file will now be created if you chose to save results. 18 THE FEEDBACK INDICATOR The feedback indicator will appear when your presentation starts. You can drag it to a preferred on-screen location. You can use your mouse to activate each function. Alternatively, you can use the Q5 instructor commands, shown in brackets. 1 Response Feedback: The percentage of participants who have responded. Click to change to a numeric value. 2 Repose Question: Click this to repose the question to the remotes. (Press [Fn] on the Q5 and press on the Q7) 3 Pick a Participant: A random participant number appears on-screen. Names appear if using a participant list. (Press [Pick] on the Q5 and press on the Q7) 4 Show Graph: A graph of the results will appear on-screen. (Press on the Q5 and on the Q7) 5 Show Game: When in Game mode, pressing this button brings up the game screens and animations. See Presenting with Learning Games. (Press [Show] on the Q5 or on the Q7) You can also right-click on the feedback indicator to see options such as presentation settings, view, and transparency.
19 PRESENTING WITH LEARNING GAMES To begin the presentation, click the Presentation Button. Use the Present As drop-down to select from the list of games. The game introduction will play, followed by your PowerPoint presentation. Game play and scoring varies by each game type. To view game progress after each question, press [Show] on the Q5, on the Q7, or the game (joystick) icon on the response indicator.
20 8 REPORTING Click on the Reporting Wizard icon on the Actionpoint toolbar. Alternatively, opening a.qrx file directly will also bring up the reporting wizard. 1. Click Browse to locate the Qwizdom (.qrx) results file. 2. Choose your preferred report and click Generate. The top set of reports will generate Excel-style spread sheets, useful for printing a full list of answers, scores, or other details. Question Summary Reports (with/without answer) will generate the same Flash-based graphs available in presentation. Using Answer Report (PDF), a full report can be generated for each participant. Results can also be exported to CSV for use with external report compilers.
