3 Open Access Open access to scholarly publications Born in 1990s in the Serials Crisis Inability to access research for academics US, Australia and Scandic Countries have led Subject based at first Moving into main stream HEIs in 2000s All Russell Group Universities have repositories 128 institutional repositories like LRA in UK 17 institutional mandates now in place

Opens up discoverability, visibility and readership Evidence that it increases article citation and hence impact Major UK funders now require (mandate) it Potential to build a shop window of curated full-text research outputs Provides visible return on public investment in scholarly practices

The Leicester Research Archive University s research focussed Institutional Repository Over 5,300 items currently hosted Purpose A digital collection of research output from members of the University of Leicester Operates within legal guidelines Openly accessible to the globe Audience Scholars and prospective employees Current and prospective students Commerce and potential investors Research Funders

8 Who Runs the LRA? Managed by the Library Plus LRA Administration team Mediated deposit, rights verification & record creation Steering Group (LRAPG) Membership includes RSO, ITS & ProVC Reviews policy and developments Sponsor Research Committee sets overall direction

9 What is Leicester s Policy Institutional Mandate With effect from 1st June 2009 Academic staff are required to submit their research publications to both the open access webbased Leicester Research Archive (LRA) and the internal central research publications database (RED). Thesis Mandate Since 2008 all University of Leicester doctoral students have been required to submit an electronic copy of their thesis to the Leicester Research Archive. Repository Policy overseen by LRAPG
