1 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES PRE-MILKING MANAGEMENT To ensure that all milk contact surfaces are sanitary prior to milking. Check message board in milk parlour for treated and fresh cows. Get sufficient clean cloth towels for milking (from hamper). Fill teat dip cup with 1% teat dip (Bovi-Kote), fill pre-dip cup with 0.5% dip (Theratec). Arrange gates in barn to allow cows to enter holding area. 2 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES MILKING MANAGEMENT Strip Dip / Wash Dry Apply Post Dip Milk treated animals according to treated animal milking procedures. To ensure milk is harvested in a way that prevents contamination and promotes udder health. Milking Put on nitrile gloves. If necessary, wipe teats of any excess dirt with a cloth towel. Pre-dip each teat with Theratec allowing a minimum of 30 seconds contact time. Strip 2 or 3 squirts from each quarter onto parlour floor to check for abnormal milk. If milk is abnormal, milk the cow with the bucket milker or quarter milker. Dry teats and teat ends with new cloth towel and discard towel in dirty bucket. Attach unit within seconds of application and align milk hoses parallel to the cow. Dip and strip the cows in groups of four then return to first cow for drying and attaching (ensuring about 30 seconds between pre-dip application and drying). After unit has detached, check udder for complete milk-out, dip teats with Bovi-Kote (ensuring the entire teat is covered). When all cows on a side are milked and dipped, release by pressing the red button with arrow pointing up. The next group of cows is allowed to enter platform by pressing the red button with arrow pointing down. Treated Animals/Animals with Abnormal Milk Treated cows and cows with abnormal milk to be milked with bucket milker and separate claw. Treated cows or cows with abnormal milk are identified with a red leg band. Milk from bucket milker MUST BE disposed of in liquid manure tank. 3 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES POST-MILKING MANAGEMENT On completion of milking, prepare equipment for wash and run wash cycles. To ensure milking equipment is cleaned immediately after use to prevent bacterial growth. Wash Milking Equipment Check TTR after completion of milking to ensure that the milk is cooling properly. When all cows are milked, return milker units to wash manifold, as they were prior to milking. Turn off water timer in milkhouse to shut-off pre-cooler. Turn power switch OFF to deactivate detachers. Pump milk out of line using manual pump control on box located below plate cooler. Blow milk out of line by pushing milk button above wash vat. Remove clamp from hose by receiver jar. Move pre-cooler valves to OFF position. Move swing pipe from bulk tank to sink. Turn on both lights on milk panel at detachers. Turn dial on pipeline panel in milkhouse to WASH. When rinse is finished turn dial to ACID. On Dairy Chem Panel press ENTER button until P3 shows and hold for 20 seconds. Take the dirty cloth towels and put them into the washer. Add 1 cup of detergent (Santex). Put any dry towels into the hamper and clean, wet towels into the dryer. Clean the cow platform in the parlour using the hose. Make sure all gates are closed and chained for free stall barn and parlour. Wash down any residue or spilled milk in milkhouse. Reviewed By: Page 3 Date Reviewed:

4 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES LIVESTOCK MEDICINES MANAGEMENT Store according to label directions. Identify, record and drycow treat all cows. Culture, identify animal, record treatment and treat as per label or veterinary prescription. Milk treated animals into bucket milker, put on new markings after each milking as necessary, withhold milk 24 hours past label directions. To ensure that the milk or meat that is marketed is safe for human consumption and does not contain violative residues. Storage Livestock medicines are stored in fridge or cupboard in utility room according to label directions. Used bottles, syringes and needles and expired medicines are to be put in container marked LM Waste above cupboard in utility room and given to the vet to dispose when full. Treatments are recorded in an Excel computer file named Cow Treatments. It also lists type of antibiotics used and the withdrawal time (computer is in barn office). Dry Cow Treatments Record treatment on white board in parlour. Mark leg of cow to be treated with red band (dry cows are identified and moved to old barn.) Treat all quarters with dry cow treatment according to label directions. Dip all teats. Record treatment in computer Excel spreadsheet. Lactating-Cow Treatments Take a sample from infected quarter. Identify sample and freeze for future culturing. Mark cow to be treated with a leg band and marker on the hip (red marker found in parlour). Write treatment on the white board in the milk parlour. Record both type and time of treatment to ensure animals are not sold or shipped prior to withholding time limit. Treat cow according to label instructions. Record treatment in computer Excel spreadsheet. Lactating Animal Milking Procedures Milk using bucket milker. NOTE: Bucket milker must be monitored to avoid flooding and emptied after each use. Marker is located in parlour. Remark each cow after you have milked her, as required. Always withdraw milk a minimum of 24 hours longer than label of drug indicates. If drugs have been administered off label, withhold according to veterinary prescription. List of antibiotics and withdrawal times is on fridge door and in computer Excel spreadsheet. To ensure that the milk or meat that is marketed is safe for human consumption and does not contain violative residues. Purchased Cows Identify cow as a purchased cow using a coloured leg band. Milk with bucket milker. Take a representative sample for antibiotic residue testing and send a composite culture to the veterinarian for bacterial culture. Milk with the bucket milker and separate claw until a sample of milk is confirmed negative for the presence of antibiotics and culture results are known. Remove cow s leg band when milk test returns negative. Calves and Heifers Calves or heifers are to be marked with the red marker prior to treatment. Treatment of any calves or heifers is recorded in the DHI calendar. No animals are shipped or sold during a withdrawal period. Reviewed By: Page 5 Date Reviewed:

6 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION Identify all calves at birth using NLID tags. All cows are identified by NLID tags, registration papers and/or barn cards. Dry cows are uniquely identified or separated from the milking herd. Treated animals are marked with leg bands and/or coloured marks on side of animal. All animals leaving farm must have an NLID tag and movement must be recorded on recordkeeping system. To ensure that each animal can be uniquely identified for management purposes. Heifer and Bull Calves Apply NLID ear tags to all Bull calves at birth. Newborn heifer calves to be raised on farm are identified by NLID tags and entered into computer spreadsheet. Lactating Cows All animals in the herd are Purebred, and have individual registration papers to verify identity. Animals are identified also with NLID ear tags. All cow information is entered into computer program. Dry Cows Before being treated, dry cows are marked with red leg bands. Dry cows are moved to old barn or separate pasture. Treated Animal Identification Treated cows are marked with a red leg band as well as a red mark on their hip. Treatment record is written on the white board in the milk parlour and in the computer record. Both type and time of treatment is recorded to ensure animals are not sold or shipped prior to withholding time limit. Treated heifers and calves are marked on hip with red marker. Treatment is recorded in the computer record. Animals Leaving the Farm Animals leaving farm are identified with NLID ear tags. This includes bull calves and cull cows for slaughter. 7 FREE-STALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES CORRECTIVE ACTIONS To ensure that milk and / or meat that is contaminated is not marketed. Corrective Actions A. If you suspect you have milked a treated animal into the tank: Leave a note for the BTMG advising the milk is not to be picked up. Contact milk transporter if possible. Call the veterinarian to arrange to have a sample tested. Advise veterinarian of drug used and circumstances. If positive, dump milk down drain. Wash bulk tank. If negative, contact DFO Field Services Representative or Marketing Officer, provide information and look for clearance to market milk. B.
