OVERVIEW Social Sciences provide the basis for all human understanding. They comprise the disciplines that define, shape and guide our societies. The School of Social Sciences (SOSC) brings together academic areas that significantly impact and inform our everyday living: law and criminal justice, sociology, history, psychology, public administration, social work, theology and religious studies. Through these disciplines, students will be exposed to scientific study of thought and behavior and will develop strong analytical and research skills. Armed with a greater understanding of the social challenges in our country, our region and our world, the School prepares students for leadership. Through their examination of our past and present day, these future leaders will shape the quality of life to be enjoyed not only for their own generations but also those yet to come.

OUR PROGRAMMES The School offers a range of courses that give students access to a wealth of ideas and approaches to thought, human behaviour and interaction through its bachelor and associate degree programmes. It also facilitates the University of the West Indies (UWI), Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree programme. BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA) History Psychology Public Administration Social Work Theology ASSOCIATE OF ARTS (AA) Law and Criminal Justice Studies Religious Studies Sociology CERTIFICATE in Theology UWI, BACHELOR OF LAW (LLB) BA in History This programme allows for the development of analytical and research skills. It helps students develop an awareness of global issues and current regional challenges through a retrospective analysis of the region s past. The programme also helps students develop a comparative context for studying The Bahamas in relation to the Caribbean region and its history, while also providing a knowledge base for African, European and American History.

BA in Psychology This programme focuses on the scientific study of thought and behaviour and deals with virtually all aspects of human life such as behaviour, cognition, emotion and social interaction. Students focus on the individual and address issues relevant to The Bahamas, our region and the world. BA in Public Administration This programme prepares students for leadership roles in government with a focus on development policy and management. Students are taught the technical, managerial and political skills necessary to develop and implement a range of public programmes, in a learning environment that emphasizes professionalism and accountability. They will be equipped with workplace skills that will allow them to effectively address economic, social, educational, environmental, health and other such public priorities. BA in Social Work This programme is designed to develop skills for the prevention and amelioration of social problems and the enhancement of the quality of human life. Students develop social work skills that will enable them to help people to understand and to effectively manage the conditions of their daily living, their ability to accomplish life tasks and to realise individual and collective aspirations. BA in Theology This programme permits students the opportunity to understand the Holy Scripture, the history and theology of the Christian faith. Students are exposed to disciplined theological exploration, and develop skills in homiletics, church administration, leadership, Christian education and community involvement.

UWI LLB Since the academic year, The College has facilitated UWI s LLB programme. AA in Sociology In this programme, students will be exposed to a range of subject areas including: Sociology of Development, Crime and Society, Human Sexual Behaviour, Sociology of the Family, Race and Ethnic Group Relations and more. 13 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME All degree programmes have a general education component comprising nine areas: literacy, numeracy, foreign language, humanities, social science, natural science, health and nutrition, computer literacy and student development. While courses in your major would provide you with disciplinary, technical and procedural knowledge, the General Education Programme is designed to graduate students who demonstrate critical, reflective and creative thought and who are able to convey those thoughts articulately and confidently in written and oral form.

ALUMNI REFLECTIONS The College of the Bahamas has laid a solid foundation for all of my personal and professional achievements. At The College I was able to receive a high quality education as well as develop my leadership skills. Today, I am able to use my COB alumni network as those who sat under the tree with me now sit at the boardroom tables with me. It was an invaluable learning experience. Tanya McCartney, Managing Director, RBC FINCO AA 1987 When I reflect on the Social Science department of C.O.B., I remember first and foremost the lively, poignant and risqué discussions held in our Religion course with Reverend Dr. Philip Rahming. I remember our introduction to words such as paradigm and societal mores in Sociology with Camille Liverpool-Barnett, and who can forget exploring the world of abnormal psychology with Nik Psilinakis? C.O.B. was much smaller back then ( ), both in physical size and in student population. Most of us were so young! We found a family at C.O.B. - one that allowed us the freedom to gingerly test our new level of independence while providing sufficient of a thrust for us to find our wings and soar. An unforgettable and thoroughly enjoyable experience! Nicolette Archer, Vice Principal, St. Anne s Primary School AA 1983
