7 Humanities and Arts Scholarship Activities Working with UAB s Humanities and Arts departments to help faculty pursue their research globally and locally, to enhance teaching in the Humanities, and to encourage creative endeavors. The Dean s office has funded forty-six scholarly, creative, and teaching projects. In May, Rebecca Bach is taking three College faculty members to the National Endowment for the Humanities to meet with program directors and to plan an NEH visit to UAB next Spring. Planning a celebration of CAS Faculty Authors. Twenty-five CAS faculty members have published books this academic year. We will be celebrating the publication of thirty books by these authors. You are all invited to the celebration to eat, drink, see the books, and meet the authors: May 2, 3-5 at the Alumni House (see Rebecca Bach with questions). In the process of moving the Art Studios and Theater Props Studio.

9 CAS Interdisciplinary Innovation Forums Focus on world s biggest problems where interdisciplinary innovations will have big impact and where UAB has existing strengths/interests Faculty driven effort and typically 2-3 faculty present in each monthly forum along with external speakers Campus-wide organizational committee Phase I: Monthly forums are held at the UAB Alumni House Phase II: Will provide $150,000 funding for interdisciplinary team proposals. Additional funding possible from UWIRC s/business community
10 Building Innovation Capacity - Partnerships CAS has partnered with UAB Research Foundation (UABRF) and Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) to build innovation capacity February Proposal submitted to National Science Foundation (NSF) Partnership for Innovation (PFI) program requesting $600,000 over a two-year period CAS partnership with Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratories (Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee and Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California) March 2012 Proposal submitted to establish a Center of Excellence in CAS requesting $5 M over a five-year period

12 Student Success Initiatives Undergraduate Catalog Online version / Online input for revisions / better searchable / pre-requisites will be added to courses when hovering Graduation Planning System (GPS) The GPS (degree audit/map system) will allow students to track the completion of their degree requirements and create a detailed four-year course planner Preparing for rolling out these student success initiatives allowed us to rigorously and systematically review our curriculum articulation and clean up house
13 CAS Advising Update Filled two open advisor positions to work with students CAS - Health Related Programs CAS - Liberal Arts designations Use of the CRM (Client Relationship Manager) in Advising Academic Care Team - Formation of a CAS Academic Care Team, consisting of five advisors, with the goal of identifying and supporting at-risk students early in their academic career. Currently have 46 students on the list Graduation continuing to use the Academic Success Hold to identify students in the 2006 and 2007 cohort that may be able to graduate by end of Summer Goal of 47-48% grad rate for 2006 cohort

18 Development Update Total Raised $1,802, College Leadership Council 20 Inaugural Members -5 alumni, 15 community members (many of whom are donors and served on Departmental Advisory Committees) Each making personal contribution to The College Fund, an unrestricted fund that can be used by Dean with consultation from the Leadership Council to support the College s goals Working to expose group to various areas within the College. Have held subcommittee meetings in the areas of Pre-Law Studies, Art/IVA, and Study Away Spring Meeting Friday, April 20, 2012 will include tour of/presentations by CIS, Biology, Music and Media Studies Plans underway to expand group from membership of 20 to 50 over the next three years **Plans are also underway for creation of a Junior Leadership Council for young alumni and professionals in

22 CAS Strategic Plan Update Strategic planning for the College Steering Committee of faculty, staff and students established in Feb. Input gathered from stakeholder groups in focus groups and meetings Individual contributions entered on intranet site Intranet site includes repository of input for stakeholder viewing Submissions from all sources being collated for Committee deliberation Iterative interactive process with stakeholders will develop the draft plan Climate in the College Survey followed by focus groups of staff and faculty in Fall Dean s Office has been working on implementing many of the suggestions
23 CAS Strategic Plan Update Graduate Education Provost is shifting funding from master s programs to doctoral programs Dean is reallocating College resources to master s programs Chairs and graduate program directors have met to discuss revamped criteria for allocating graduate student funding New graduate student appeals procedure is now in place: standing College committee introduced to handle issues appealed beyond the department level
24 UAB Code of Conduct The Code is built around eight standards, each of which addresses an important aspect of our work, no matter what position we hold: (1) Provide quality education, research, healthcare, business interactions, and other services. (2) Treat individuals with respect. (3) Comply with applicable laws, regulations and policies. (4) Use confidential information responsibly. (5) Acknowledge and appropriately manage conflicts of interest. (6) Safeguard and accurately account for UAB resources. (7) Provide a safe environment.
