6 Four Corners Program Overview Located in Durango, Colorado, the Four Corners MSW Degree Program is a unique partnership among the State of Colorado Department of Human Services, Southwest Colorado Community College and many other Four Corners agencies. Since 2002, this innovative program has met a need for graduate level MSW education in the rural and tribal communities of the Four Corners area. The program has four main objectives: needs of rural communities, address the concerns and needs of enhance social service delivery systems, address community problems and the special multi-ethnic communities, with special emphasis on local Native American communities, and strengthen the professional social work infrastructure of Four Corners communities. The courses offered during the academic year are taught using a variety of technologies: summer intensive courses taught on-site in the Four Corners region, classes simulcast and broadcast from Denver using Interactive TV (ITV) and online and hybrid courses using web-based technology. Both GSSW faculty and local adjunct faculty teach the on-site classes. Students and instructors have online access to the University of Denver Penrose Library. A full-time Durango-based faculty member serves as site director and offers a local presence, coordinating all aspects of the program. Coordination with a Denver-based Distance Education Director ensures that all aspects of the program are integrated between the University of Denver campus and the on-site Four Corners program. Because 25% of the student enrollment comes from the area s many Native tribes, the Four Corners program includes a special focus on Native social work content. The Native People s Project was initiated in 2005, and two classes have been developed to date that add Native content to the curriculum. Native Peoples Practice: History and Policy and Assessment and Interventions with Native Peoples are both taught by Native faculty. Field education is a key component of the MSW program. Students complete internships throughout the Four Corners area, and a team of field liaisons assist these students in the selection and completion of their field placements. The Four Corners program offers a weekend schedule of Friday afternoon and Saturday classes that allow students to be in their communities during the week and also work at their internship sites. 4

7 Four Corners Program Options Two-Year MSW Program The two-year MSW program option is available to applicants with baccalaureate degrees in academic disciplines other than social work. Degrees must be from institutions accredited by a regional accrediting body. Students who attend full-time typically complete the 90-quarter-hour program in seven to eight academic quarters (two calendar years). Students begin their first or foundation year course work in the fall quarter (September, 2012). The foundation year (September to June) consists of course work and field internship. During the foundation year, students are introduced to the professional foundation of social work. Students acquire a basic knowledge of intervention skills and techniques used to improve the social functioning of individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations. At the same time, a sense of social responsibility for the achievement of social work goals will be enhanced. In the second or concentration year of the program, students advance in professional knowledge and skill through specialization in clinical practice (focus on individuals, couples and families), including courses in child welfare, mental health, substance abuse, multicultural practice and community leadership. A specialization in Native People s social work practice is available. Advanced Standing MSW Program The advanced standing program option is available only to applicants with a baccalaureate degree in social work from a college or university whose social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) at the time the BSW or BA degree is conferred. Distance education advanced standing students begin their program in summer 2013 and complete their MSW degree in one calendar year (four quarters). The first quarter of the advanced standing program consists of course work only. Specific courses are required during this quarter, including multicultural practice and a seminar whose purpose is to help students integrate their BSW education with their social work experience and plan their continuing professional development. Advanced standing students then begin their concentration year in the same manner as two-year MSW students, specializing in clinical practice. Cooperative Undergraduate/ Graduate Degree Program Through a partnership between GSSW and Fort Lewis College in Durango, qualified Fort Lewis students may earn both a Bachelor s degree in psychology or sociology and an MSW degree in just five years. Fort Lewis sociology and psychology majors may apply to spend their senior year enrolled in GSSW s Four Corners MSW program. Fort Lewis will accept courseby-course equivalency of the approved GSSW courses, enabling Cooperative Undergraduate/ Graduate Degree Program students to complete their Bachelor s degrees during their first year of the two-year MSW program. Additional information may be obtained from the psychology or sociology departments at Fort Lewis College. 5
