2 THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SONG TO INCREASE STUDENTS LISTENING SKILL OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMK N I AMBAL KEBUMEN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013 By: Umi Suryati ABSTRACT This thesis is entitled The effectiveness of using song to increase students listening skill of the second year students of SMK N I Ambal Kebumen in the academic year 2012 / It is aimed to find how effective of song in increasing the students listening skill. The population of this research is the second year students of SMK N I Ambal Kebumen in the academic year 2012/2013. The researcher took two classes for 66 students as the sample. In addition, the researcher collected the data by using an achievements test and observation. The result of the thesis shows that the mean of control group for the pre-test is from the total score 2074 and the post test is from the total score 2368, while the mean of experimental group for the pre-test is from the total score 2181 and the post-test is from the total score The result of analysis indicates that in teaching listening using song is effective to make students increase their listening skill. It proved by the computation that value of t-test is this value shows that there is significant difference because the t-obtained is higher than t-table, 7.13> it means Ho is rejected whereas Ha is accepted. A. BACKGROUND Language is very important in our life and its function is that to communicate. It means that language is the most effective media that can adopt the human s will including expressing human feelings. In everyday activity, one of the elements to do so is language. Basically, the language has specific functions such as to express the needs of someone, to communicate, to make the integration of the social environment, and to adapt to certain situations, and it is also used for social control. But basically, the main function of the language is to send message or meaning by one person to another.

3 As a foreign language, English has four skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking) that have to be mastered by the students. From these skills, listening is a skill that is felt difficult to be master, because it needs more attention and concentration to comprehend the sounds (listening material). It can be said that listening is not a passive skill; the process of listening is a complex process in which many things happen simultaneously inside the mind. We can use some activities that can stimulate the students to improve their listening skill. The activities such as watching a film, listening to news report, and listening to English songs can stimulate them. In watching a film, we can cover the subtitle with a piece of paper for a few minutes and try to predict what is going to happen. In listen to news report, we can choose the topic that interests us such as about sport, fashion, or education. When listening, we can write the vocabularies that appear on the particular topic. In listening English songs, we can listen to the pronunciation of words and sing along with the songs. B. RESEARCH METHOD In this research, the researcher uses experimental research as a research method and quantitative approach. This research was conducted in Tata Boga I and Tata Boga II class of the second year students of SMK N I Ambal Kebumen. The research was done from November, 14 until 23, The subjects of this research is the second year students of SMK N I Ambal. There are 66 students. To collect the data, researcher used test. C. FINDING AND DISCUSSION The result of the thesis shows that the mean of control group for the pre-test is from the total score 2074 and the post test is from the total score 2368, while the mean of experimental group for the pre-test is

4 66.09 from the total score 2181 and the post-test is from the total score The result of analysis indicates that in teaching listening using song is effective to make students increase their listening skill. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS Based on the research findings and discussion, the conclusion can be drawn that there is effectiveness of using song in teaching listening to the second year students of SMK N I Ambal Kebumen. The result of the mean score of the post-test of experimental group is higher than the mean score of post-test of control group (83.39 > 71.76). In addition, the result of t-value is Then, the researcher consults the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of freedom It shows that t-value is higher than t-table (7.13 > 2.042). It means that the use of song in teaching listening to the second year students of SMK N I Ambal is effective. There are several suggestions; for the English teacher: they can be adopted song as a media to increase the students listening skill, it can help the teacher to get attention from the students. For the students: The students should pay attention to the teacher s explanation, have high motivation the teacher in the class and also should often listening English song, so the students can be good listener and make the English learning process enjoyable and interesting. For the other researchers: the researchers are expected to do a similar research with similar topic by using a wider scope and larger population. They also suggested to use the information in this research as an input in conducting other research dealing with listening.
