1 Office of Religious Education St. Joseph Church 685 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ (732) X 2224 and 2225 October 16, 2012 Dear 7 th Grade Parents: This is a special year of preparation for your child as he/she prepares to become fully initiated into the community of the Catholic Church. The children are in the process of preparing to make a more mature commitment to Christ and to the beliefs of the Church through intense study, prayer and especially by being actively involved in the Liturgical and sacramental life of the church(attendance at Sunday Mass). The children are also asked to be a part of the service community of the church. All those accepting full membership in the Church are also accepting the responsibility to serve. Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. (MT20:28) Therefore, in keeping with the guidelines and directives for Confirmation prepared by the Bishop of our Diocese, the Confirmation candidates are asked to share their time and talents, voluntarily, with their Church, Community and Family. This requirement is achieved through the experience of Christian Service. Candidates are asked to make a commitment of Christian Service to Church, Community and Family. This service should be performed freely and willingly. It represents the candidates intentions of becoming full members of this servant community, the church and special followers of Christ. *After reading and reviewing this packet of information please return the signed Commitment document. Service projects are to be completed by Feb. 26, If service projects and the test are not completed, your child will not be accepted in the 8th grade level next year. Thank you for your cooperation as together we prepare your child to become more fully initiated into the life of the Church. Sincerely yours in Christ, Mary Esther Wyman, C.R.E. 3 St. Joseph Church, Religious Education, Toms River, New Jersey SERVICE PROJECT: Purpose: Service is an essential part of the Christian Life. Through your baptismal promise, you were asked to carry on the work of Jesus (CCC, 1268). The Holy Spirit confers on each baptized person the gifts needed to carry on the ministry of Jesus. A good summary of these gifts can be found in 1 Corinthians 12: The Church sees ministry or service as the responsibility of each member of the faith community (CCC, 909). Jesus Himself showed us what it meant to be a servant and to minister to those in need. Your 7 th grade project hours are cumulative of 10 hours. You may choose among Church, Family, and Community. (It is recommended but not required that a minimum of 3 hours should be completed in all three area of service.) You may also choose to do all 10 hours in one service area. Reminder- Praying and going to Mass are not service. As Catholics we are expected to pray and go to Mass. Reminder- The 8 th Grade registration will not be accepted until the Service Project has been completed and handed in to the Religious Education Office. Submit a minimum of a 2 page essay: Include the following pertinent information in your essay: 1. Your essay should be typed, double space, well developed. Check your grammar and spelling and don t forget to write your name on each page. 2. Whom did you serve, when, and for how long? 3. What made you choose this service activity? 4. How is this service connected to your preparation for confirmation? 5. Did this service present you with any challenges? 6. What advice would you give to a 6 th grader entering 7 th grade next year that will help him/her choose a service project that is meaningful in their faith journey? c:\users\jmc\documents\tomsriver\7th gr. instructions on service project (essay).doc

4 Office of Religious Education St. Joseph Church Candidates Service Pledge The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve. I,, understand that as a candidate for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, I am prepared to accept full membership in the Church by making a more mature commitment to Christ and to the beliefs of the Church through intense study, and prayer, most especially by being actively involved in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church (attendance at Sunday Mass). I am also aware that the church is a service community, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, who came to serve. In keeping with the guidelines and directives for Confirmation preparation by the Bishop of our Diocese, I promise to fulfill at least a 10 hour service commitment to the best of my ability and talent. I am aware that I must complete my service for my Church, family and community by February 26, If my service is not completed by February 26, 2013 and I fail to pass my Confirmation Test I will not be accepted in 8 th grade next year. Candidates Name: Please Print Section: Candidate s signature: Date: Parent Signature: Date: Jesus said, Here I am among you as one who serves. Luke 22:27 c:\users\jmc\documents\tomsriver\7 gr. candidates service pledge.doc

5 GOSPEL REFLECTION SHEET We not only meet Jesus in the Sacrament of the Eucharist but we also meet Him in the Liturgy of the Word. God will always tell us what is good, true, and loving to help us, sometimes in His words in the bible and sometimes in our hearts. But we need to get used to listening so we can hear God clearly. We pray that these exercises in reflecting on the Word of the Lord will help you to grow and experience His love and guidance. Student Name: Section: Date: Date and Time of Mass attended: Who was the Celebrant? Was there a Deacon? What was the Gospel Reading? (example: John 15:1-11) Please answer the following questions completely. * What message did Jesus give you through the Gospel or through the celebrant s homily at Mass? * How can you use what you learned to make a difference in your life or the lives of others?
