1 ZIMBABWE Ministry of Agriculture,Mechanisation and Irrigation Development SECOND ROUND CROP AND LIVESTOCK ASSESSMENT REPORT 2013/14 SEASON Kennedy Mabehla (AGRITEX)
2 Presentation outline Objectives of the assessment Methodology Crop production outlook Livestock production outlook
3 Specific Objectives of the Assessment To estimate yields and production of food and non food crops in the country. To identify areas of deficit/surplus in cereal production at district and provincial levels. To assess the situation of livestock as it relates to stock-feed availability, grazing condition, water supply and disease prevalence.
4 Second round crop and livestock assessment findings. Builds on results from the first round crop assessment such as:- Area planted Crop stages and condition Rainfall season quality Crop input availability in as far as they influenced crop yields and production this season.
5 The exercise was conducted by a team made up of officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, AGRITEX, LPD & Meteorological Services Department. The assessment relied upon data collected by AGRITEX officers based at ward level. (Structured questionnaires) The data was compiled at ward, district and provincial up to national level. Data provides basis for estimating planted area and expected yields. Provide insight into the current livestock situation.
6 METHODOLOGY Verification done through field observations of crops, grazing condition, water availability and livestock condition, farmer interviews. Farming households sampled from all farming wards and farming sectors. 30 households per farming sector/ward, census if farming HH less than 30 Essential adjustments to yields were made then agreed upon after the field visits. Data collation, analysis and report writing done by national team with input from district & provincial teams.

21 GRAZING AVAILABILITY Marginal parts of Matabeleland North and South, Manicaland, Midlands and Masvingo had inadequate grazing which may not last into the next season

24 LIVESTOCK HEALTH No major disease outbreaks reported However isolated cases were recorded for Anthrax, Black Leg, Lumpy Skin and Newcastle in poultry. Better control of tick borne diseases.
