Excavation and Funerary archaeology Global Mediterranea with the collaboration of The College of Doctors and Licentiates in Letters and Sciences of Valencia (Spain) and the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici di Pompei, and the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici delle Province di Napoli and Caserta the project: "Pompeii and Alife, the community of the living and the city of the dead" is integrated with the international Practical Program in Roman and Funerary Archaeology in Pompeii and Alife (Italy). The project and practical program are coordinated and directed by archaeologist Dr. Luigi Pedroni and by the archaeologist and anthropologist Llorenç Alapont. This year s program will include anthropological and paleopathology analysis as well as digital and radiological studies of skeletal remains preserved inside the casts of the people from Pompeii, which expired during the 79 A.D. eruption and were found in the Pompeii necropolis of Porta Nola. The study of these bodies utilizes a pioneering and innovative approach to anthropology and archaeological research. The second aim of the project is the excavation and study of the Roman Forum of Alife. The Forum is the most important zone of Alife's Roman city. The exceptional conservation of the Roman Forum makes it an ideal place for the study and understanding of classic and Roman culture.

Evening: Archaeological guided visit of Villa dei Misteri and Boscoreale Analysis of the skeletons inside the body molds Sunday, July 14 th (Pompeii) Airport/Train Station drop off: Naples All the participants are provided with a complete dossier with the information of the seminars and work-shops and an official academic credit English is the official language of the program. All seminars, lessons and guided visits will be given in English. In addition, an archeologist from USA or UK, will be your permanent guide and your link to the directors and rest of the project staff. The Program includes, free entrance to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Boscoreale, Museum of Boscoreale, National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Fontanelle Cemetery, Sepino. (The entrance to the Virtual Museum of Herculaneum is not included)

6 PROGRAM ACCOMMODATIONS and MEALS. In Alife, participants will stay at the Country Resort Vernelle ( The rooms are private bungalows for 2 or 3 people with en-suite bathroom, refrigerator, internet and air conditioning. Single rooms may be an option if the participant is willing to bear the additional cost. Please contact us for more information. All meals are included (except lunch on the free day) We will have a buffet breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and dinner will be varied menus at local restaurants. In Pompeii we will stay in a private residence in Scafati (a 15-minute drive to the site of Pompeii) The rooms are for 4 people, communal bathrooms are located outside of the rooms. The residence have several rooms for lab work and seminars, interior and exterior dinning rooms, a complete kitchen, laundry machine, internet access, swimming pool and soccer field. All bedding is provided. All meals are included. The varied menus will be prepared by a private cook, who will be able to attend to your preferences. Please let us know if you are a vegetarian or if you require a special diet so that we may discuss the best way to accommodate your needs.

7 PROGRAM FEES: US$3,490 Fees Include: Full Room and Board for the duration of the program (excluding free day lunch) - Field Excavation, Seminars, workshops, Guided visits (The entrance of Virtual Museum of Herculaneum is not included) - Medical Insurance - Transportation to and from the airport on first and last day of the program - Application fee - Administrative costs Fees DO NOT include airfare. PAYMENT SCHEDULE: To reserve a space, you must pay a $300 application fee. The remainder of the program cost will be due before 1 st of June. Application fees will be refunded if the applicant is not selected. Application Deadline: Rolling application. We accept applications until all spaces are filled. Cancellation and Refund Policy: - Before May 1st: All payments, except for $50 from the application fee, are refundable. - Between May 1st -June 1st: Application fee non-refundable. The balance is refundable. - After June 1st: All payments are non-refundable unless your application is rejected by the program director.

8 Travel Arrangements: You should begin making travel plans as soon as your place in the group is reserved, and you should complete them upon being notified of your selection. We strongly recommend that participants purchase travel insurance to cover all needs including medical, accident, baggage loss, delays and personal liability. Global Mediterranea is not a travel provider nor is a registered travel agent. Your travel arrangements to and from Italy are subject to the terms and conditions of your travel agency. In the rare event that the program is cancelled, Global Mediterranea will refund program fees, but is not responsible for non-refundable airline or other tickets or payments or any similar penalties that may be incurred. It is your responsibility to protect yourself against airline and travel agency cancellation fees. Medical Insurance: Global Mediterranea provides a free insurance packet that offers full medical and surgical treatment, prescription drugs, coverage in case of accident and some compensation for baggage loss or theft. You may contact our staff for more information. European students should bring an EHIC card with them. Right of Refusal: Global Mediterranea serves the right to refuse an applicant's selection. This is a rare occurrence and is most likely due to a person's inability to meet health requirements or in the interest of group compatibility. Once in the field, the program director and Global Mediterranea reserve the right to send a participant away from the program should that person's behavior compromise the safety, research objectives and general performance of the group, or violate Spanish laws, regulations or customs. Anyone over 18 can participate in our program but our groups usually consist of university students and recent graduates. The only prerequisite for participants is a desire to carry out archaeological fieldwork at one of most important archaeological site. These programs are designed for people who want to learn and practice archaeology including those without previous fieldwork experience. You will work under the close supervision of professional archaeologists that will teach you what you need to know.

9 If you need to confirm our diploma with academic credits, you will need to contact your academic advisor at your school to start the process. Each school has different rules regarding credits, so you should have your advisor contact us. Most likely you will have to register for your school's fieldwork course and have our site directors give you the grade in conjunction with your professor. After we receive your application and application fee we will send you the official acceptance letter and more specific information about your program. At that time we will ask you to fill out some other forms to complete your file. You will need to pay the balance of your program fees 23 days before the beginning date of the program. We will send you a confirmation of your acceptance within two weeks after we receive your application. There is no application deadline. We accept applications until we fill all the spaces in the program. You can start/finish the program on different dates than the ones indicated But please contactour staff with your specific needs. With your program information we will send you directions to the rendezvous point, usually at the closest airport the first day of the program. If you can't get to the rendezvous location on time we will give you directions on how to reach the excavation site by yourself. With your program information we will send you a list of suggested items and clothing that will be useful for your program. You don t need to bring any specific tools. All archaeological tools and equipment will be provided on site. There are medical facilities at a short distance from the excavation sites. If you need any kind of medical care you will be transported to the closest health care center. All participants are covered by a complimentary insurance program providing full medical and surgical treatment as well as prescription drugs. Please contact our staff for complete details. Travel insurance is recommended. In the rare event that a program is canceled Global Mediterranea will refund participation costs, but will not refund travel expenses.
