4 Introduction Pompeii is a very ancient, or old, city. It is in southern Italy. Pompeii is near a volcano named Mount Vesuvius. In A. D. 79 Mount Vesuvius erupted. It was a terrible disaster. No one has lived in the city since that time. Many people in the city left their homes. The next day, Pompeii was covered in rock and ash. The people who did not leave the city died. Today, we can see how these people lived by studying what is left of the city. This is a map 0 of Italy, showing Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. 2

5 July 1, 1930 A Trip to Italy Gina's parents looked at Mount Vesuvius as they drove, They were by a farm far away from where most people lived. Mr. and Mrs. Sorrentino were archaeologists. They were working in Italy for the summer. Gina did not want to be in the car because she was bored, hot, and thirsty. Gina and her parents stayed with a professor that her parents knew. That night, Gina wrote in her journal. Luna, the family dog, sat on her bed. 3

6 July 1 Dear Journal: We arrived in Naples, Italy this morning. The first part of the trip was boring, My parents told me about their project in Pompeii. They are going to work with a famous Italian archaeologist and professor. His name is Amedeo Maiuri. Mr. Maiuri found a house in Pompeii that belonged to a very important family. It is called the House of the Menander. Archaeologists found lots of treasures in the house. I want to see it. 4

7 o Gina is writing In her journal with Luna next to her. Last night Father told me that in the 1800s an archaeologist named Guiseppe Fiorelli worked in Pompeii. He divided Pompeii into many smaller areas. Each area has shops, gardens, and small factories. Mr. Fiorelli made copies of the dead people he found in the city. I hope I don't see them! My parents want to learn about the people in Pompeii. They will begin to work soon. I have to go to sleep now. Good night. 5

8 Jul!:j 4 A Day at Mount Vesuvius Dear Journal: Today, we went to Mount Vesuvius. Luna came too. A little train took us to one part of the mountain. Then my parents and I walked to the top of the mountain. From the top of the mountain, we sawall of Pompeii. The view was beautiful. Then we walked near the opening of the volcano. Steam was coming out of it. It smelled strange. The steam showed that Mount Vesuvius is still active. I hope it stays quiet! 6

9 Then the sky became very dark. I heard thunder and saw lightning. r was scared because r thought the volcano was going to erupt. It began to rain so we ran to the railway station. We waited for the train. I wanted to find out more about Pompeii. asked Mr. Maiuri many questions about the city. r sat very quietly and listened to the true story about what happened to Pompeii. (!jauguage /pmctiye Clue: The word railway is a compound word made of two smaller words, rail and way. Can you understand the meaning of railway from the two smaller words? ) 7

10 o Black smoke came out of Mount Vesuv ius when it erupted. We know what happened to Pompeii because someone saw everything that happened. His name was Pliny the Younger. He wrote about what he saw. On August 24 almost two thousand years ago, the day was warm and sunny. Around lunchtime Pliny the Younger saw black smoke coming out of Mount Vesuvius. The mountain was erupting for the first time in one thousand years. Soon the day became very dark. 8

11 The people were very scared because rocks and ash were falling. Many people ran away. But some people stayed in their homes. Soon the roofs and walls of houses fell down. There were also many earthquakes. Lava, a red hot liquid, came down the side of Mount Vesuvius. The lava burned away everything it touched. The people who stayed in the city died. When the people returned to the city to look for their families, they found that t he whole city was covered with ash. Some of the taller buildings did not fall down. But all the trees and plants were covered by ash. 9

12 July 5 City of the Dead Dear Journal: Today my parents and I went to Pompeii, Mr. Maiuri was waiting for us there. He wanted to talk to Mother and Father about the project. A woman named Elizabeth Walker showed me around the city. She drew pictures of everything the archaeologists found. We walked on the main road of the city. Pompeii was empty. No one lives there. The workers cleared the ash and stone. Now archaeologists work in the buildings to find treasures. 10

13 We walked by many shops, bakeries, and houses that were destroyed. It was strange to think that many people lived here at one time. I found many interesting places in Pompeii. Elizabeth said I had the whole summer to explore the city. We arrived at the Forum. This was the busiest place in ancient Pompeii. It is a large area with many tall stones and a wall. People came to the Forum to buy and sell things. News and announcements were put on the wall. Q)anguage /I>ETECTNE Clue: The first letter of Pompeii is capitalized because it is the name of a place. 14 We looked closely at the wall. I saw something that was w ritten thousands of years ago. Elizabeth said it was in Latin. It was about a gladiator. Girls like me read this writing almost two thousand years ago. I wanted to go to the amphitheater. This is the place w here gladiators fought. I really wanted to see it. o Elizabeth and Gi na look at t he lat in w riting on t he wall.

15 Before we went to the amphitheater, we explored the homes of the gladiators. Then we arrived at the amphitheater. It was very big. Twenty thousand people once sat there. That was more than all the people who lived in Pompeii! Gladiators fought in the round space in the center of the amphitheater. Gladiators were like slaves. They had to fight. If a gladiator stayed alive for three years, then he was freed. 13

16 '4 July 10 A Discovery Dear Journal: I am not just a visitor anymore. Now I help my parents. I met an Italian worker named Marco. He showed me what they were doing inside the House of Menander. I learned how to look for small objects like pieces of bone or pottery. also met a worker named Luisa Carbone. Her job is to put together broken pieces of pottery. I like to help Luisa with her job when I finish working with Marco.

17 Yesterday something strange happened. found a room. The door was closed and nobody was around. I opened the door. The room was very dark. When I entered the room, a snake crawled away. saw something on the ground. I put my hand out to feel what it was. It felt like a body! I was so scared that I ran out of the room. o In the dark room, a snake crawled away o n the ground.

18 o In t he dark room, Gina found this plaster copy of t he body of a young girl. My father heard me screaming when I ran to the garden. He asked me what was wrong. I told him what I had found in the dark room. Father told me it was a plaster copy of someone who died in Pompeii. He said there were many of them in the city. Then Father got a flashlight and walked with me to the dark room. I saw that the plaster copy was shaped like the body of a young girl. 16

19 I felt very sad thinking about the little girl. began to think about my life. I am lucky because I have my parents. They love me. I am happy to be alive. I have many things I can do. This little girl could not. I wanted to give this little girl a name. I named her Minerva. Luna just came into my room. It's time for bed. Good night. 17

20 Pompeii Today Archaeologists have been studying Pompeii for more than 150 years. Pompeii is an ancient city in good condition. Things such as tools, forks, and plates tell us about daily life in the city two thousand years ago. Wall writings tell us how the people lived. We learned what the people ate and what things they liked to do. Amedeo Mauiri. the professor in the story, is a famous archaeologist who studied Pompeii for more than forty years. Like Gina, today's visitors can walk the streets of Pompeii and learn about the life of the people who lived there. This is what Pompeii looks like today. :> You can see many tall stones and walls.
