3 Tapescript Hyder and Stewart two towns on the American-Canadian border You are going to hear a radio interview with Dan Fargo, an Englishman who lives in Hyder. He talks about two towns Hyder and Stewart. Hyder is in the United States of America and Stewart is in Canada. Dan moved to the States from Britain when he was young. The interview is divided into two parts. In each part you will have to do some tasks. Do the tasks while you are listening. At the end you will hear the whole interview once again without pauses. Now read tasks 1 4. [Pause: 30 sec.] Now listen to the interview. Do tasks 1 4 while you are listening. [Pause: 3 sec.] I ve come a long way for today s programme. I m standing on the borderline between Canada and the USA. To be exact, I m standing at the point where the two border towns of Stewart, Canada, and Hyder, Alaska that s USA, of course meet. And talking to me out here is Dan Fargo. He moved from Texas to Hyder 10 years ago. Is that right, Dan? Yes, it is. I love it here. We re so far from the big cities. Hyder calls itself a town, but look at the place just a few buildings and some bad roads. Only about 100 people live here. Stewart on the other side of the border in Canada is bigger. Hyder and Stewart are good neighbours, aren t they? Yes, they are. Hyder needs Stewart. You can t drive to the rest of Alaska from here. You have to go through Canada for 950 miles. So you go to Stewart if you need something? Yes, there are many more shops there. You can t buy much here in Hyder. And we get electricity from Stewart, too. [Pause: 2 sec.] Now finish tasks 1 4. [Pause: 60 sec.] You will now hear the second part of the interview. First read tasks [Pause: 60 sec.] 3
4 Lernstand Englisch 2005 Now listen to the second part. Do tasks 5 10 while you are listening. I read that children from Hyder have to go to school in Stewart, Canada, because there isn t a school in Hyder. That s right. And you know we use Canadian money here in Hyder, in the United States? Really? Yes, the only place in Hyder where you have to pay in US dollars is the post office. Do many tourists come here? A few, and usually only in the summer. The winter here is long, cold and dark. Most of the tourists come to see the glaciers or the bears at Fish Creek. There are lots of black bears here. There are bears near Hyder? Near Hyder? They re often in Hyder. They come into town in winter to look for food. We see them here in summer, too. Last week a bear walked right into my wife s souvenir shop. But the bear was more frightened than her. She shouted and the bear ran. Wow! Thank you very much, Mr. Fargo. Now we re going to talk to... [Pause: 2 sec.] Now finish tasks [Pause: 40 sec.] Now you will hear the whole interview again. Check your answers while you are listening. [Pause: 4 sec.] Textwiederholung [Pause: 50 sec.] Damit ist dieser Teil des Hörverstehens zu Ende. [Pause: 30 sec.] 4
