2 Dear Student, Please keep your VSL Language Passport in a plastic pocket at the back of your folder or work book, along with samples of your best work completed during the year. Don t forget to bring it to the mid-year Parent/Teacher/Student conference. Wishing you all the best with your language study this year!! VSL Area Manager Victorian School of Languages 2014 LANGUAGE PASSPORT
3 VSL Language Passport Dear Parents, Welcome to your child's Assessment Portfolio. This VSL Language Passport and the VSL Student Reports issued in June and November are a record of your child's language learning throughout the year. They are an important part of the school's commitment to inform you of your child's learning progress. The two VSL Student Reports for this year should be read in conjunction with the work samples. A great deal of time and effort has gone into putting this portfolio together. Please take time to sit down with your child and look carefully at all of the tasks in the book. They will be thrilled to hear your positive comments on their work as they describe the task and how they felt about doing it. Please praise your child for their efforts but don't forget that learning is a journey and we all take different amounts of time and effort to reach our destination. Children progress at different rates and therefore should not be judged against each other, but by their own progress over time and against the achievement standards for AusVELS. We have included a range of work samples to provide an overview of both the best and favourite pieces of work completed by your child and aligned to the AusVELS curriculum. These represent only a small sample of the tasks completed by your child during the year. These snapshots in time will give you a clearer picture of how well your child is performing in class and help you to track his or her progress. Combined with the Student Report and the Parent/Teacher/Student Conference in June, we feel you will be given an excellent picture of your child's journey. Sincerely, (Class Teacher) 1
4 About the VSL The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a government school committed to the provision of language programs for students in Year 1 to Year 12 (VCE), who do not have access to the study of a particular language in the schools they attend. The school began in 1935 by teaching two languages. The school has two main sections: centre (face-to-face) classes and distance education classes. The school teaches 50 languages in 42 centres across Victoria. Its 15,000 students come from both government and non-government schools. Classes are held outside of school hours usually on Saturdays throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area, country and regional Victoria. The VSL centres are organised in 11 areas, each under the administration of a Leading Teacher (Area Manager). The school teaches 11 languages via distance education (Arabic, Chinese, Classical Greek, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish). The levels range from Year 6 to Year 12 (VCE). The teaching is carried out through a mix of workbooks, on-line provision, telephone lessons, video-conferencing, and regular seminars. In addition, the school - has a course writing section - has a technology section - provides a range of professional development activities on current curriculum initiatives and technology - is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and provides a number of Certificate I, ll and III in Language courses as well as a VET in Schools program. The VSL School Council, which comprises elected and nominated members, provides expert and broadly based guidance and leadership to the school. Overall staffing arrangements, curriculum and administrative services are organised from the head office in Thornbury where the Principal and three Assistant Principals are based. 2
