2 Welcome Welcome to ICON at First United Methodist Church. We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church with four Sunday services has a membership of 3000 and is overflowing with life. We hope you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come be a part of what God is doing here. Visitor/New Member Class We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introduction class that consist of four parts. The classes will assemble at 9:30 a.m. in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today, Introduction to First Church gave you an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the history, theology, worship, and membership of this great church. Next week, Ministries of First Church will tell you about all the programs and ministries of the church. On September 19th, Serving at First Church will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. On September 26th, Tour of First Church, will guide you through the historic buildings of our campus. We hope you will join us each week. Nursery and Children s Bulletins Nursery is available for children up to 5 years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the lobby. Next Sunday at ICON Join us next Sunday, September 12th for a great service at ICON. Rev. Geoffrey Lentz will preach and the Worship Arts Week Drama Group will present a special Children s sermon. Music will be led by BANNER. We look forward to seeing you next week!

In this way God is forming Israel. Second Lesson: Philemon 1-21 Paul pleads the case for the escaped slave, Onesimus, to be set free. Since both slave and master are now brothers in the faith, this release would be a natural outgrowth of his practice. Gospel Lesson: Luke 14:25-33 Jesus warns his followers of the cost of discipleship: they are to give all for the coming reign of God.

5 ANNOUNCEMENTS WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER Dinner is from 5:00 6:15 p.m. This week s menu is Chicken Parmesan, Angel Hair Pasta, Roasted Zucchini with fresh herbs, Garlic Bread, Salad and Dessert. Please make your reservations in the registration pads, by calling the church office ( ) or online at FUMCPensacola.com. Reservations are needed by noon on Tuesday. GRIEF SHARE CLASS Grief Share begins next Sunday, September 12. The class will be from 5:45-7:35 p.m. in the Perry House, and will be facilitated by John Griffin. Grief Share is a 10-week class designed for anyone who has lost a loved one. YOUTH FALL KICK-OFF EGGSTRAVAGANZA The youth fall kick-off Eggstravaganza was rescheduled to September 12th because of rain last week. It will be a night full of singing, food, music, sno-cones and messy egg competitions! Make sure to wear clothes that can get messy and bring your friends. See you there! ACTIVITIES BEGINNING SEPT. 8TH AND 15TH The Joe Harrell Men s Breakfast (7:00 AM), Repair and Renewal (9:00 AM) and WACCI (2:30 PM) all begin back for the fall on September 8th. Lectionary With Lentz (Noon) and Wesley s Wednesday Night Bible (6:15 PM) begin back on September 15th. SPECIAL NEEDS CLASS All God s Children, a new Sunday morning class for children with special needs, will begin on September 12th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. The class will be extremely flexible and will accommodate a wide range of abilities. If your child would benefit from a program like this, please contact Lisa Bond at YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CLASS All young professionals are invited to join us for a small group study beginning Wednesday, September 8 at 6:15 p.m. in the Perry Home Parlor. 6 WHO ARE WE? ICON, the newest service at First United Methodist Church, began on January 11, The service has been widely successful and has added many new members to our church family. ICON is based on four founding principles: + Cutting Edge: We use new songs, modern musical styles, two huge HD screens, and social networking to bring the gospel of Jesus to our postmodern culture. + Tradition Rich: Unlike most contemporary services we fully embrace our Christian heritage. Our service centers around Holy Communion and finds the ancient liturgy of the early church to be highly relevant. + Art Embracing: We value the creative arts in our congregation. Our service uses musical and visual arts to help deepen our experience of worship. + Christ Centered: We strive to keep Christ at the center of all we do. Our focus is not so much about making Christ relevant to the world, but making the world relevant to Christ. Our worship is not about us, but about God. Because of the tremendous growth of ICON, we are currently working on plans to relocate the service to a much larger space above its current location in Wesley Abbey by WHAT DOES MEAN? ICON is the Greek word for image. Worship at ICON is highly visual and experiential with the large screens, candles and processional cross. The Bible proclaims that we are made in God s image (Genesis 1), but through our sin we have tarnished that image. We believe that Christ is the true image of God (Hebrews 1) and through him God is restoring us to our true image. The Bible says (1 John 3:2), What we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. Our hope is to be an ICON of Christ.
