Step 1 - Introducing the Gustav Klimt Slideshow Guide BEGIN READING HERE MOTIVATION Will you volunteer to look extra special today? (USE COSTUME JEWELERY) You are dressed nicely for school, but I m going to make you sparkle with something extra. (ADD JEWELRY) Please model and show off your dazzling new jewelry. You DO look extra special! (COLLECT JEWELRY) Do you think sparkling jewelry makes someone look extra special? Let s see if this woman looks attractive in her many jewels. Click Start Lesson To Begin 1. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer DEVELOPMENT Quickly count how many pieces of jewelry you can find her wearing. (FIVE +) Do you think she is dressed up to go somewhere special? (YES) Have you ever worn so much fancy jewelry? (NO) Please say hello to Miss Adele. She was a very rich lady who lived in Austria many years ago. She dressed up in her fanciest dress and beautiful jewelry to have her portrait painted by an artist named Gustav Klimt. Can you hold your hands in the same position as Adele? (DEMONSTRATE) Very good! What is the main color of this portrait? (GOLD) Does Adele have on gold jewelry? (YES) Is she wearing a gold dress? (YES) Is the background gold, too? (YES) Point to the only part of this portrait that is NOT gold. (HEAD, SHOULDERS, ARMS) The artist, Gustav Klimt, certainly enjoyed painting with gold and silver, and adding colored jewels. He decorated his paintings and made them special, just like wearing jewelry makes a person look special. Can you find and point to what could be a sparkling jewel in the background? (AROUND HER HEAD) Klimt would attach different colored jewels to his paintings. Sometimes he used buttons and pieces of broken mirrors to bring sparkle and color to his canvases. Would that be interesting to look at? (YES) Not only would he use gold, silver, and precious jewels in his portraits, he also used them to

2. Portrait of Emilie Flöge decorate dresses! This was a very special person in Gustav s life. Do you think she was (1) his mother (2) sister or (3) girlfriend? Show me by the number of fingers you hold up. That s right, this was his girlfriend named Emilie. She was a dress designer and owned a very nice dress shop in Vienna, Austria, where they lived. Fashionable women liked to shop there, because she had dresses that were different from what other stores were showing. How were they different? Let s take a look. 3. Photo of Victorian Dress Is this quite different from Emilie s dress? (YES) Is the shape different? Which one looks more comfortable? (EMILIE S) Women for many years had been squeezing themselves into dresses like this one, which pinch the waist as tiny as possible. Sometimes it was so tight that the women couldn t even breathe correctly, and they would faint! 4. Portrait of Emilie Flöge Gustav and Emilie tried something new and daring. Together they designed loose fitting, flowing dresses like Emilie is modeling here. Gustav painted this portrait of her. Do you think he used sparkling jewels, mirrors, and buttons again? (YES) Does the dress sparkle? (YES) Gustav and Emilie designed ten dresses in this same style. She would pose in each of them, and Gustav would paint her portrait or take her photograph. Then they would show off the different styles that women could buy in her store. Wasn t that clever advertising? Who would like to stand up and quietly pose like Adele is doing? (SELECT SEVERAL) I think Klimt would like to have painted your portrait, too! (BE SEATED AGAIN) Let s take a look at Klimt s most famous painting. It is called The Kiss. It could be called, The Golden Kiss. I bet you know why. 2 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

5. & 6. The Kiss, Close-up: The Kiss Is it definitely a Golden Kiss? (YES) Klimt is showing us happiness with his carpet of flowers and the halo of gold surrounding the man and woman. Trace with me the golden halo that brings the man and woman together. (START AT MAN S LEFT SHOULDER, AROUND HEAD, TO WOMEN S ANKLE) Can you find flowers in a place other than the ground? (HAIR, DRESS) Where can you find geometric shapes in the background? (BY THE WOMAN) Show me with your hand in what direction your eyes travel, left or right. (RIGHT) Why? (DIRECTION OF HEADS TURNED, GEOMETRIC PATTERNS IN BACKGROUND ON RIGHT, GOLD COCOON ON RIGHT SIDE, LEGS POINTING RIGHT) Notice the abundance of patterns and shapes Klimt uses. How are the shapes in the man s golden clothes different from the woman s? (MAN: GEOMETRIC SHAPES-BLACK, BROWN, WHITE; WOMAN: MULTI-COLORED ROUND, CURVING SHAPES) He contrasts male and female this way but unifies them with the abundance of gold. One of Gustav s essential painting tools was a pair of binoculars. Can you think why? 7. the Sunflower How might Klimt have used binoculars for this painting? (TO LOOK CLOSE-UP, TO SEE DETAILS) He would study the details through his binoculars and fill his canvasses as if he was standing very close, even if he was far away. He never showed landscapes from a distance. He enjoyed painting the intense colors and interesting details. Every summer he and Emilie would take a vacation to a favorite lake in Austria. He would pack a large trunk of canvasses and picture frames so he could work outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Many times, if he found an interesting scene, he would stop in the middle of the lake in his boat, take out his bag of art supplies, and start painting. Even more important than the painting supplies were his binoculars and an ivory picture frame. Do you think he used his ivory picture frame for the finished painting? (NO) Let s see how he used it. Make an oval frame with your fingers like this. (DEMONSTRATE JOINING THUMBS AND INDEX FINGERS). Now, move your frame around to find an interesting scene that would make a good painting. That is what Gustav did time and time again like in the next landscape. 3 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

8. Apple tree I What kind of a tree do you see? (APPLE) Are the apples green or ripe? (RIPE) Is this landscape a burst of color and shapes? (YES) Gustav loved gardens. For many years he worked from a little summerhouse in his garden. His last studio was surrounded by meadows, and he planted flowerbeds and trees all around his house. Would you like to look out your window and see this colorful scene? What shape do you see the most? Show me with your hands. (CIRCLE) Are there any straight lines? (NO) Does the apple tree almost disappear in the blaze of colors and shapes? (YES) I think it s time we meet our artist, Mr. Gustav Klimt. 9. Photo of Klimt in studio garden Is he wearing a business suit or loose fitting clothes? (LOOSE CLOTHES) Just like the dresses he designed, Klimt wore casual, comfortable clothes when other men were wearing stiff shirts and suits. Gustav came from a large family. Show me with your fingers how many people you guess were in his family. There were nine! Raise your hand if you have a family of nine including your parents and brothers and sisters. His father was an artist who drew pictures and designs on gold. Three of his brothers and sisters also became artists! Gustav went to art school, and then he opened his own studio. He was very popular and successful, and he was always trying something new in art. But there is one thing he continued to do in art. Let me show you. 10. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer There is a shape Klimt used in all of his golden paintings. It is a shape that has a meaning. It means never-ending. Take your finger in the air and follow me. (DEMONSTRATE A SPIRAL) It is called a spiral. Can you find it in the painting? Point to it. Let s find it in the next painting. 11. Portrait of Emilie Flöge (Repeat finding spirals on dress and pointing) 4 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

12. The Kiss (REPEAT FINDING SPIRALS ON GOLD SURROUNDING WOMAN. POINT OUT.) Not only did he repeat spirals in portraits, he used them in the houses he decorated. Let s take a look at a dining room in Vienna, Austria. 13.Stoclet s Dining Room Can you point to the spirals? Would you like to be an invited guest for dinner in this dining room? Let s take a close-up view of the beautiful walls created by Klimt. 14. & 15.Tree of Life A & B The spirals all connect to make a. (TREE) What can you find on the branches of the tree? (BIRDS, EYES) Here Klimt painted huge spirals that form the branches of the spreading Tree of Life. You will be creating your own Tree of Life in your art projects, so take a careful look at all the possibilities! Soon you will be Golden Artists like Klimt. CONCLUSION Let s review Klimt using some of his favorite shapes used to decorate his artwork. Show me the square shape. Show me the spiral shape. I will say something about Klimt. If it is true, show me the spiral. If it is false, show me the square. Are you ready for our quiz? 11 The last few pages of this section contain the Art Activity for Gustav Klimt. This step-by-step outline will be a guide for instructing your child(ren) through the activity. The parent/instructor should review all steps necessary to complete this project before beginning any work. Cut out the Artist Profile Slip below and attach it to the back of the completed art project. GUSTAV KLIMT (GOOS-tahv KLIMT) Austrian Gustav Klimt s artwork sparkled and glowed with his Golden Style. Jewels, mirrors, gold, and silver made his paintings look like a treasure chest. His most famous painting is The Kiss. 12 Step 3 - Working With: Art Activity Instructions ARTIST Gustav Klimt (GOOS-tahf KLIMT) Austrian ART ELEMENTS Pattern MEDIA Foil EMPHASIS Composition using design and pattern LEVEL Intermediate VOCABULARY Abstract, emboss, pattern, shape, texture PRINT Tree of Life SUGGESTED MUSIC 1900s MATERIALS FOR INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENTS One 6 x 6 foil sheet One 9 x 9 black construction paper One 3 x 3 scrap paper (for glue) One Q-tip (glue applicator) Artist Profile Slip Embossing pencils Foam pads Jewels 5 per student Hole punch for optional hanging Glue Scissors Klimt Learning Packet with page #3 incomplete (to be finished during project) PREPARATION Place the Klimt print in front of the room. Tape a blank page #3 of Learning Packet to the board. Have pencil, foil, foam pad, glue, Q-tip, jewels, and black paper close by. SET-UP [ 5 minutes ] Distribute the materials: SUPPLIES [3] Embossing pencil, foam pad, Q-tip to each student PAPER [4] One black construction paper, one foil sheet, one scrap paper for glue, and artist profile slip to each student ORIENTATION [ 3 minutes ] 11 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

Gustav Klimt loved to paint using patterns with bright and sparkling colors. Are Klimt s compositions realistic or abstract? (ABSTRACT) Let s create some patterns just like Gustav Klimt. Demonstration AND ACTIVITY ORGANIZE YOUR WORK AREA [ 2 minutes ] 1.Place black paper, foam pad, and foil sheet in one corner of your desk. 2.Place Q-tip and scrap paper for glue in another corner. 3.Put the pencil in the center between the papers. 4.Place the Tree of Life page from the Learning Packet in the center of your desk. Note: Foil sheet is delicate, and bending will compromise the project. COMPLETE THE TREE OF LIFE [ 5 minutes ] 1.Use a pencil from your desk to complete the Tree of Life Learning Packet page. 2.Encourage the students to fill the space with more branches, taking them to all of the corners and filling in the center. 3.Cut out the 6 x 6 square. EMBOSS FOIL SHEET [ 12 minutes ] 1.Place the foam in the center of your desk. 2.Place the foil sheet on top of the foam. Students can choose either colored side. 3.Place the Tree of Life drawing on top of the metal sheet. 4.Trace over lines with the embossing pencil. Hold the paper very still, and make sure students press hard enough to emboss the foil sheet. To emboss, you will dent the foil with the pencil without puncturing it. The pencil will show which lines have been traced. 5.When the tree is traced, remove the drawing. Use the pencil (both ends) to decorate the frame of the tree. Use the unsharpened end of the pencil straight up and down to create a circle. The patterns should contrast with the spirals used for the branches. Consider straight lines and geometric patterns. 6.Retrace the tree lines for emphasis. 12 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

DECORATE THE EDGES, SHOW THE OPPOSITE COLOR [ 10 minutes ] Take time to explore ways to show the color on the back of the embossed color. Folding up corners or edges and cutting small slits to bend forward are ways to bring the back to the front. (While the students are working, pick up foam pads and distribute jewels and glue.) MOUNTING THE ARTIST PROFILE SLIP [ 2 minutes ] (Profile slips for each artist are provided. They give a brief description of the artist, the technique, and the media used in the art activity. They should be mounted on the back of each art project) 1.Write your name on the front of the artist profile slip. 2.Using glue, mount the profile slip to the back center of the black paper. 3.Encourage students to discuss their artwork at home using this artist slip of information. ATTACH THE FOIL SHEET TO BLACK BACKING [ 5 minutes ] 1.Place the black sheet of paper in the center of the desk (artist profile slip facing down). 2.Place the foil sheet in the center of the black paper. 3.With four dots of glue in the corners, attach the foil to the black paper. OPTIONAL PRESENTATION Instead of mounting the foil on black paper, punch holes in the top two corners. Thread and knot a piece of craft yarn through the holes and hang. 13 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

ATTACH THE JEWELS [ 5 minutes ] Encourage students to try many compositions with the jewels on their Tree of Life. When happy with the placement, stick the jewels to the foil. CONCLUSION You are all Golden Artists like Gustav Klimt! Your trees sparkle and shine. You have created very special Trees of Life with never-ending spirals! THIS CONCLUDES GUSTAV KLIMT UNIT. 14 GUSTAV KLIMT Ages 8 9 MeetTheMasters Online Edition
