1 Metasys Network Sales Resource Manual 635 Communications Section Product Bulletin Issue Date 0596 N1 Ethernet/IP Network The support of Ethernet/Internet Protocol (IP) by Metasys represents the ultimate in diverse Facility Management System (FMS) connectivity options with readily available hardware and software. As an alternative to ARCNET for the N1 network, Ethernet/IP uses standard network hardware to seamlessly transfer information between Network Control Module (NCM) 350s and Operator Workstations (OWSs). NCM350 N1 Ethernet/IP Operator W orkstation NCM350 In addition to an extensive installation base and widespread vendor support, the N1 Ethernet/IP Network offers high-speed operation using industry standard communications protocol. Most importantly, operators can count on the proven flexibility, reliability, and affordability that is fundamental to Metasys. 3 I ntroduction The N1 Ethernet/IP is based on proven communications technology that is used reliably in commercial and industrial settings around the world every day. With the NCM350 and Metasys Release 8.0 software, N1 Ethernet/IP allows any information accessible to one NCM350 or OWS to be immediately available to any other device network. This type of system is possible because of the speed and durability of the Ethernet/IP Network and the robust software inherent in the Metasys FMS. C arrier-sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Reliable and Regenerative CSMA/CD senses and manages channel activity. This LAN access technique enables multiple stations to sense channel activity and to defer transmission initiation while the channel is active. Peer-to-peer communication ensures the network is not dependent on any single device to control the transmission of data between devices. Data transfers can occur directly between devices, limited only by network traffic. If the communication trunk is severed, both halves of the network automatically reconfigure into two separate networks. Each maintains peer-to-peer communication among connected nodes. O pen Architecture and Connectivity Compatible and Cost-Effective Based on industry standard Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Hundreds of third-party vendors support hubs, links, and application software to meet any network application necessary. Uses off-the-shelf components interchangeably, resulting in more product, supplier, and technical support choices. Maintain an existing ARCNET installation and add N1 Ethernet/IP for future growth using Ethernet Router. Compatible with Telecommunications Industries Association/Electronic Industries Association (TIA/EIA) infrastructure standard wiring. Resides on existing shared building backbone or on dedicated Ethernet Network. N etwork Configuration Flexible and Expandable Multiple configuration options: bus, star, or a combination of the two, allow economical installation. NCM350s and OWSs directly support selectable media communication: coax, twisted pair, Attachment Unit Interface (AUI), fiber optic cable, or any combination. Repeaters extend maximum segment lengths.
