Jepson Center Sculpture Court This guide is designed for young people ages seven and up to learn about Telfair Museums three landmark buildings. Use a pencil to fill in activities at each of the three museums. Moshe Safdie designed the Sculpture Court to display sculptures outside. The Jepson Center is the only one of the Telfair s buildings that was specifically built to house and display artwork. Draw your own sculpture on the court.

2 Telfair Academy I became the first public art museum in the South when Mary Telfair left her home to the Georgia Historical Society. I opened to the public in Owens-Thomas House I was completed in 1819 and became the Telfair s second museum. Margaret Thomas preserved her distinctive home for the public by giving me to the Telfair in What do all three buildings have in common? Front Staircase All three have stairs leading up to their front entrances. Many older buildings have raised basements, and stairs are needed to get to the main floor. Which staircase has the most steps? How are the stairs different? Columns Columns hold up a roof or beam or can make a wall. Where do you see columns in each of the three buildings? Jepson Center I opened in 2006, making me one of Savannah s most important 21st-century buildings. I was built so that the museum would have space for exhibitions, the ArtZeum, studios, a café, and a store. Architect / A person who designs buildings. Many architects, builders, and craftspeople worked on Telfair Museums. William Jay designed the Owens-Thomas House and the original Telfair family home. Detlef Lienau designed changes to the Telfair house when it became the Telfair Academy. Moshe Safdie designed the Jepson Center. Curved Walls All three have curved walls either inside or outside. How many rooms inside each building have curved walls? Bridges Each museum has either an inside staircase that serves as a bridge between front and back parts of the building, or a bridge that links one side to the other. Which building(s) have both kinds of bridges? Bonus There is one other feature that you will see in all three buildings: natural light. In each museum, the architect came up with a creative way for light to enter the building that is NOT a window. Where else does the light come in?

3 The Telfair Academy began as the Telfair Mansion, built in 1818 by architect William Jay for Alexander Telfair, the son of a wealthy Georgia governor. Later, the house was owned by Alexander s sister Mary, who wanted the house to become a museum after her death. In order to transform the house into a museum, a large addition was built onto the back of the house. The inside was changed too. Except for two restored rooms, the inside of the building looks very different than it did when the Telfairs lived here. Roman Bath In the entrance hall, look up toward the front of the building. You will see a window in this shape. This is called a Diocletian window because it was used in the building that housed the baths of the Roman emperor Diocletian. Built for Art Take a look at the Rotunda Gallery. This part of the building was added onto the original Telfair house when it became a museum. The room was designed by architect Detlef Lienau for the purpose of exhibiting paintings. This room is forty feet tall! Why do you think the ceilings are so high? This photograph shows the Rotunda as it looked 100 years ago. Does it look the same today? Has anything changed? When you go outside the building, look at the front porch. Where else do you see this shape? From the outside, look at the window; then look down. Can you see this shape somewhere else? Frieze! In three of the large rooms in the Telfair Academy, you will see an area called a frieze. A frieze is a long band above the columns on a building or at the upper part of a wall inside a building. In the entrance hall, you will see a plaster copy of a very famous frieze which once decorated the most famous temple of ancient Greece, the Parthenon. Draw what you see, or use your imagination and add to the frieze. Find the Architect Look at the frieze at the upper part of this gallery. QUESTION: Look at his clothes. When do you think he lived? Look behind him. What kinds of buildings do you think he designed? ANSWER: His name is Iktinus. He is said to have designed the Parthenon, one of the greatest temples of ancient Greece, over 2,000 years ago. Can you find this man?

4 It s a Classic! Inside and outside the part of the Telfair that was once the house, you will see many classical designs that come from Ancient Greece and Rome. Find the three designs below and complete the patterns. Meandering Pattern The meander or Greek Key is a symbol for infinity. Attractive Acanthus This design is based on the acanthus plant found in Greece. Can you add more leaves to this design? The Owens-Thomas House was designed by William Jay for Richard Richardson. Jay designed the house in the style of the English Regency era, using Greek decoration. Jay also used the latest plumbing technology the house was one of the earliest in the United States to have flushing toilets and a shower! Richardson owned the house for only a few years. It was later owned by Mary Maxwell, who hosted Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette in Savannah mayor George Welshman Owens bought the house in His granddaughter, Margaret Thomas, left the home to the Telfair in Fakes! One feature of Regency architecture was symmetry; in other words, a house or room had to balance or look the same on both sides. Sometimes this meant adding a fake door or window to a room so that it would look right. Draw your own addition to complete the symmetry in this picture of the family dining room. That s Dentil, not Dental! This pattern looks like teeth! Find it on the exterior of the building.

5 Follow the Water The plumbing at the Owens-Thomas House uses a cistern, a large tank for storing water, on the roof to collect rain. The rainwater is then transported by pipes into another cistern in the basement, where it is piped into the bathtub and shower. Trace the path of water through the Owens-Thomas House from the cistern to the bathtub. Built to Last Because Savannah often suffered fires that wiped out many wooden houses, William Jay used sturdy, sometimes fireproof materials in his buildings. Cast Iron Leaves Outside the Owens-Thomas House you will see a very unusual balcony. The balcony is made of cast iron and was shipped to Savannah from England as a kit that had to be assembled. This is one of the first large-scale uses of cast iron for a house in America. When the Owens-Thomas House was built, one of the strongest and cheapest materials known was tabby, a concrete-like material made of oyster shells, lime, sand, and water. Look for a place on the outer garden wall where the tabby is exposed. Like the false door in the family dining room, some other parts of the Owens- Thomas House are not what they seem to be. The columns in the front hallway are actually wood that has been painted to look like marble. In the Slave Quarters In addition to the main house, William Jay designed an outbuilding as a carriage house on one side and as living quarters for the slaves of the Richardson family on the other side. In the upper floor of the slave quarters building behind the main house, you will see lines showing where walls once divided this room. Between nine and fourteen slaves lived at the Owens-Thomas House at various times. How many rooms would have been on this floor?

6 The Jepson Center is the newest of the Telfair s buildings. It is very open and lets in lots of natural light. Moshe Safdie, the architect, wanted the Jepson to have big windows so that the square outside would be seen by people in the museum. He wanted the museum to feel like part of the city. Another way the Jepson relates to Savannah is that it has similar height and mass as other buildings on the square and in the city s historic district. The two ends of the building are large, like the houses in Savannah that face the street, while the sections of the building that face the lane are shorter and smaller, like Savannah s carriage houses. Light as Decoration Instead of Greek or Roman classical decorations like those at the Telfair Academy and Owens-Thomas House, the Jepson Center uses the shadows created by light coming in through the glass windows and ceiling to make patterns on the walls and floor. Draw the different patterns made by light that you see around the museum. Courtesy of Moshe Safdie What will it look like? When an architect designs a building, he or she starts by brainstorming. Architects are always asking questions and thinking up ways to solve problems. Then the architect sketches some ideas. After that, he or she can make a model of what the building will look like. Finally, plans are drawn up so that the building can be constructed. Above is a sketch of the Jepson Center by architect Moshe Safdie. Although computer programs are used to create architectural designs and models, many architects still sketch out their first ideas by hand.
