4 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Topic Objectives The works with a variety of Alaris System administration sets to continuously or intermittently deliver fluids, medications, blood, and blood products. After completing this topic you will be able to: Explain the use of each of the four keys on the Alaris Pump module. Describe several key features. Describe the 's downstream occlusion detection modes. Respond to an air-in-line alarm.
Page 2 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Keys You learned about most of the channel keys in the Alaris PC point-of-care unit training. This is a brief review. CHANNEL SELECT allows you to designate the channel you would like to program. PAUSE is used to pause an infusion on the channel. After 2 minutes, you are prompted to restart. CHANNEL OFF is used to power off the channel. Remember that if only one channel is running, the entire system will power down. RESTART is used to restart a channel that was previously paused or was in an alarm state.
Page 3 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Features The offers many features and benefits. Several of these are: AutoRestart, KVO Rate Adjust, and Restore. AutoRestart, if enabled, minimizes nuisance patient-side occlusion alarms caused by momentary kinking of tubing, IV pushes, etc. It allows the system to automatically continue an infusion following detection of a patient-side occlusion, if downstream pressure falls to an acceptable level within a 15 second "Checking Line" period.
Page 4 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Features KVO Rate Adjust is used to select the KVO (Keep Vein Open) rate. This determines the rate of fluid flow after an "Infusion Complete" occurs (hospital established from 1 to 20 ml/h). A different KVO rate can be configured for each profile.
Page 5 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Features The RESTORE soft key is used to simplify programming. The Restore feature can be used to recall previous programming parameters for the module. This option is not available if a new patient is selected or if it has been more than 8 hours since last usage.
Page 6 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Downstream Occlusion Detection The can operate in either of two downstream occlusion detection modes, Pump or Selectable. The default mode is established by your hospital. However, if both modes are enabled you can use the Pressure Limit soft key on the Channel Options screen to change the mode. The next page explains how each mode affects the operation of the.
Page 7 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Downstream Occlusion Detection In Pump mode, the downstream occlusion alarm threshold is 525 mmhg at flow rates of 30 ml/h or greater. At rates less than 30 ml/h, occlusion pressure is lower and is dependent on the programmed rate, to ensure rapid response to occlusions. In Selectable mode, you can adjust the downstream occlusion alarm threshold in increments of 25 mmhg, up to a maximum of 525 mmhg or the maximum pressure allowed for the profile.
Page 8 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Air-in-Line Detection The is equipped with an ultrasonic component that enables the system to detect a single bolus of air and, if so configured, an accumulation of air. Your facility can select from three settings (50, 75 or 250 microliters), for each profile, the upper limit for a single bolus of air to pass without alarm. If Accumulated Air is enabled, the system will detect the presence of multiple air bubbles that are too small to be detected by the single bolus limit. The accumulated air detection limit varies according to the setting for the single bolus limit.
Page 9 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Responding to an Air-in-Line Alarm If you see air in the detector: 1. Press the RESTART key on the to advance the air past the detector. 2. Remove the air from the line according to hospital policy. If you do not see air in the detector: 1. Silence the alarm and close the roller clamp. 2. Open the door and firmly press tubing toward the back of the detector. 3. Close the door and open the roller clamp. 4. Restart the infusion. 5. If the alarm still occurs repeat this procedure, but in step 2 remove the tubing and clean the detector with a watermoistened Q-tip.
Page 10 of 14 Glossary Resources Back Next Menu Exit Accumulated Air Alarm When the Accumulated Air Alarm occurs, which is very rare, a message appears on the Alaris PC point-of-care unit display. To respond: 1. Remove the air from the line according to hospital policy. 2. Press the RESET soft key. 3. Press the RESTART soft key to continue the infusion.
