1 St Michael s School 13 July, 2016 Newsletter No: 38 Welcome to the last but one newsletter of the school year. This is the time of year that many people make the mistake of asking teachers if they are enjoying winding down for the summer. Teachers then resist the urge to foam at the mouth and twitch uncontrollably as they write reports, arrange trips and treats, rehearse shows, clear classrooms, mark tests and finalise assessments, hand over information and resources to new teachers, order equipment and books for next year and and much, much more all whilst carrying on with the school day. This time of year is as much about planning for next year as it is finishing up this one. We re not complaining, it s our job and, as fond as we have all become of our classes, we do look forward to giving your children back to you for five weeks. So, if you value your safety, never ask a teacher (or Teaching Assistant) if they are enjoying winding down for the summer! Anyway, seeing as you are, indeed, getting your children back for the summer, I have taken the liberty of including details of a few summer events and things to do. I hope they are useful. Summer Holidays: A Message from Mrs Davey 'The ebook Collection on Oxford Owl is the home of 350 tablet-friendly ebooks and activities, including the free ebook library and the two new ebook collections: Project X Alien Adventures and Oxford Reading Tree in Fact. Easily searchable by age, level and genre, the ebook Collection is designed to help you find the perfect book for every child.' oxfordowl.co.uk I have registered each class with Oxford Owl (see below) and, should you wish, you can log in using this username and password by clicking on the 'My class login' button on the Oxford Owl site: I hope you and your child enjoy the pc and tablet-friendly ebook Collection, as an optional resource in addition to the books you read at home. There are also further resources and advice on reading with your child on the site. If anyone knows of or even owns, reasonably priced one or two bedroom accommodation within a reasonable distance (walking or bus) from St. Michael s, please let us know and we will pass on the details.

2 A Message from Mrs Cordaro: Year Six Secondary Transfer No Year Six parents expressed an interest in the possibility of a Secondary Transfer Parent meeting but Mrs Cordaro wants parents to know that she is available to chat through any concerns if needed. Just make an appointment through the office. Sports News from Mr Floyd Running Club Huge congratulations to all members of the club, which has now finished for the year. The last run on Monday was a very healthy 5.8km and all 22 runners did brilliantly. Look forward to seeing you all in September! Mayor's Fun Run I've been trying to get more information about this 5k and 10k race in September (18th I think) at Forty Hall but cannot yet find out exact details. I will keep searching until we break up, but if this proves impossible please sign up to include 'St Michael's CE Primary School' as your team. Let's try to be the biggest team there! Swimming from September 2016 Whilst we've been able to support swimming lessons for children in years 2 and 3 in the past, sadly this will not continue from September. The cost of running swimming lessons has become unsustainably high and with regret we cannot continue with these lessons. Children will continue to swim in Year 5 as before (on Monday afternoons). Sports Day Finally a huge thank you to all children and parents who have taken part, supported or watched our PE events this year, including our fantastic School Games Day last Thursday. Congratulations to our Infant winners: Red House, and our joint Junior winners - Green and Yellow houses. Next year will see more events our wonderful children will enter, and lots of new initiatives supported and promoted by our Healthy School Team. Take a look at all the photos on our website showing all the sporting activities our children have been part of this year! Mr Floyd A Reminder: Family Picnic after school We are holding our annual picnic on Friday 15 th July from 3.30pm onwards. This is very much a family event and children attending will be the responsibility of their parents (or nominated adult). Year 5 and 6 children who are allowed to walk home alone may attend without an adult as long as the class teacher has it in writing that they may attend and will walk home alone. If the weather is good, chill out and take your time. If the weather is bad well, they say fortune favours the brave! How long you stay will depend of how good your waterproofs are. It would be great to see some governors there, as well. Lost property Please could parents check lost property for any items of clothing your children may have lost as EVERYTHING will be recycled on the last day of term. Thank you.

3 Afternoon Tea On Monday, all our regular volunteers gathered together for a thank you afternoon tea. As well as tea and cakes (ably served by Year Four children) we were able to thank them for their hard work and dedication. They do so much behind the scenes work for us and they enable your children to have much more adult attention and encouragement than school staff alone can give. I am sure that, if you knew everything they do, you would join with me in an enormous thank you. Many of our volunteers are over 55 and have been brilliantly trained by AGE UK as part of an inter-generational project. They have learned about early reading, early phonics, child protection and a whole wealth of things. They bring a real richness to our school community so, THANK YOU to AGE UK for letting us be part of your project. Mrs Betts-Hammond's Science Question of the Week! (The answer will be hidden in the newsletter) Q. What do you call molten rock before it has erupted? Year 6 Events Leavers Concert, Tuesday 19 th July, 7pm. Leavers Service, Thursday 21 st July, St Michael s Church, 10am. Leaver s Picnic, Thursday 21 st July in the afternoon (this event is for the children and staff not parents) Free Money!!! No, only joking but it did get your attention! If your child is in Year 6 please ensure that your ParentPay account is up to date and all monies have been paid. Sports Day Thank you to Mr Floyd for organising our fantastic Sports Day last week and to our Year 6 helpers who supported the younger children. End of Term 2.30pm Don t forget, term ends at 2.30pm on Friday 22 nd July. Magma PTA News St Michael s Had Talent A huge thank you to the incredible performers who took part in the St Michael s Has Talent show last Friday. All the children were absolute stars and it really was a wonderful evening. Thanks also to all the parent and staff helpers who made the show possible and to the appreciative audience for all their enthusiastic cheers and support. We made just under 500 from the event which we will put to good use in the school (maybe even spend it on some new music equipment?).

4 End of Term Picnic We hope to see you all enjoying yourselves at the after school picnic this Friday. Don t worry if you forget to bring along any drinks/ snacks as your friendly PTA will be selling soft drinks and refreshments - yes we think of everything! Church News St Michaels Church Village Fete Saturday 16 July Please help us! To run stalls and set-up/takedown see Katherine Murphy... katherinemurphy07@gmail.com We are now calling urgently for... Tombola prizes, Toiletries, Bottles (Alcoholic!) Please put them in the NW corner of the church Also CAKES!! Please start baking all those delicious goodies that St Michaels is famous for bring them on morning of the fete And lastly and most importantly.. Don t forget to come and support it!! All the usual fun of the fair, BBQ, Pimms, Afternoon teas and another chance to throw water at the Vicar!
