2 Update in Interstitial Lung Disease: Effective Diagnosis and Management OVERVIEW Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a disease category that encompasses dozens of pathobiologically distinct conditions, and it poses substantial challenges to the practicing pulmonologist. There is considerable confusion in the medical community regarding the diagnosis and management of ILD. Further, it often takes a year or longer, and several physicians, to arrive at the correct diagnosis, introducing significant delays in treatment. This conference is designed to provide clinicians and other health care providers with a practical approach to the diagnosis of ILD, an understanding of the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis, and a treatment approach that is broad and evidence-based. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course should be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of a systematic approach to the diagnosis of ILD Understand the proper use of key diagnostic procedures including high-resolution computed tomography scanning and surgical lung biopsy Discuss the various factors important to prognosis in ILD. Describe the role of lung transplantation in ILD, and the factors that affect candidacy and timing. Develop a comprehensive approach to the management of ILD that includes both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies.
