3 Overview Overview An optional 12 VDC lead-acid battery and battery backup board (P/N ) may be installed in the 400 Series Timeclock to provide it with up to 12 hours of full functionality in the event of power loss, including support of:! Full LCD display (automatically dimmed)! Integral swipe badge reader! Keypad entries! Bell relay (device connected to bell relay must have its own power source)! Input/output board (remote badge reader, printer port, bell relay) The 400 Series Timeclock s yellow LED flashes when the timeclock is operating on 12 VDC lead-acid battery backup. The amount of time the 12 VDC lead-acid battery is capable of supplying backup power depends upon the 400 Series Timeclock s hardware configuration. The following table summarizes various backup times: Hardware Configuration No Modem or I/O Board With Modem, No I/O Board No Modem, with I/O Board With Modem and I/O Board Backup Time 12 Hours 8 Hours 5 Hours 4 Hours Note It takes the 400 Series Timeclock 24 hours to recharge the lead-acid battery after it has been completely discharged. 4 Installing the 12 VDC Lead-acid Battery Backup Option Installing the 12 VDC Lead-acid Battery Backup Option Installation of the 12 VDC battery backup option is comprised of three main steps:! Installing the battery backup board within the timeclock s chassis! Installing the 12 VDC lead-acid battery within the timeclock s chassis! Connecting the battery backup board s cables to the main board and to the 12 VDC backup battery The following figure illustrates the 400 Series Timeclock s 12 VDC lead-acid battery backup option placement.. The board is shipped from the factory with the battery cable and main board cable soldered to their respective connectors on the board. 4 ADP Incorporated

5 Installing the 12 VDC Lead-acid Battery Backup Option Main Board cable connector (INPUT) Fuse (F1) Battery cable connector (BATT) The battery backup board's main components are described as follows. BATT is a two-post connector that connects the 12 VDC lead-acid battery's cables. The battery cable's red lead (+) is connected to the post labeled POS. The battery cable's black lead (-) is connected to the post labeled NEG. INPUT is a three-pin connector that connects the main board cable. The pinout for INPUT is: Pin Signal 1 Sense Line (SNS) 2 +DC Voltage (+PWR) 3 Ground (GND) F1 is a 5A/125V fuse (P/N ) that protects the battery backup board's circuitry against reverse connection of the battery cables. Warning The type of lead-acid battery used with the 400 Series Timeclock can generate hundreds of amperes for short periods of time if its timeclock posts or cable leads are shorted together. Use extreme caution when handling the battery to ensure that its cable leads do not come in contact with each other or that its timeclock posts do not come in contact with metal. 6 Installing the 12 VDC Lead-acid Battery Backup Option With external power removed from the 400 Series Timeclock, follow these steps to install the 12 VDC lead-acid backup battery option within the 400 Series Timeclock s chassis: 1. Open the cover of the timeclock by removing the security screw on the left side of the unit. Be sure to swing the cover open carefully. 2. Referring to the first figure, seat the battery backup board within the 400 Series Timeclock s chassis. 3. Secure the battery backup board to the timeclock s chassis by driving a single 6-32 x.187 screw through the board and into the threaded mounting hole. 4. Ensure that a fuse with a 5.0A/125 Volt rating (P/N ) has been installed on the board at position F1. 5. Seat the lead-acid battery within the 400 Series Timeclock s chassis as shown in the first figure. Be sure to install the battery with its terminals facing down. Align the battery with the top left edge of the timeclock. 6. Connect the battery backup board to the timeclock s main board by connecting the supplied cable to connector TB3 on the main board. 7. Using the supplied cable, connect the battery backup board to the 12 VDC lead-acid backup battery as follows:! Connect the battery cable's red lead to the positive terminal (+) on the 12 VDC lead-acid battery.! Connect the battery cable's black lead to the negative terminal (-) on the 12 VDC lead-acid battery. 8. Carefully close the cover and replace the security screw. 6 ADP Incorporated
