Country Presentation Pakistan Presented by DR KHALIDA AKHTAR GILL Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission WiN Global 2008, Marseille, France.
Nuclear Power plants Pakistan is the home to three Nuclear Power Plants: Karachi Nuclear Power Plant KANUPP Chashma Nuclear Power Plant CHASHNUPP I Chashma Nuclear Power Plant CHASHNUPP 2
KANUPP KANUPP Karachi Nuclear Power Plant is located at Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. KANUPP is a single unit CANDU PHWR with a total gross capacity of 137 MW.

KANUPP contd contd The 137-MWe (CANDU PHWR) Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) was commissioned earlier in 1972, supplied and built by Canada. It has completed its design life of 30 years and is undergoing indigenous refurbishment to enhance safety Extend its life for another years.
CHASHNUPP I CHASNUPP-1 Chashma Nuclear Power Plant I is located at Kundian, Punjab, Pakistan. It forms part of the Chashma Nuclear Power Complex.
CHASHMA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Unit-1
CHASNUPP-1 1 contd The CHASNUPP-1 1 is a single-unit. It was made operational in year The 325-MWe PWR, supplied and constructed by China.
CHASNUPP-1 1 contd.. It has so for undergone four refueling outages. Its average capacity and availability factor for year were 93 % and 96.4 % respectively.
CHASNUPP-2 The site is situated next to Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1. The CHASNUPP-2 2 will be a single-unit plant.
CHASHNUPP-2 2 contd The corresponding gross electric output of the turbine generator is 325 MWe It is under construction, commercial operation expected ~ 2011

PAKISTAN CURRENT NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM ALL Nuclear Power Plants and fuel Cycle facilities operated by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Pakistan nuclear safety issues regulated by Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA).
Contd All Nuclear Power Plants are under IAEA Safeguards. Pakistan is member of CANDU Operators Group (COG), and of World Association of Nuclear (Plant) Operators) (WANO).
Contd The government of Pakistan has chalked out a comprehensive plan to expand power generation to meet the demands of the country s s rapidly growing economy. Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission has been given the task of increasing nuclear power generation in accordance with the country s s energy security plan.

Needs Pakistan has acute shortage of energy i.e. electricity and fuel. Thermal power is very expensive and hydropower is not possible because of nuclear energy to look after growing energy needs of country. Pakistan needs nuclear energy in the field of medical, biology and agriculture needs to irradiate disease and increase in agricultural production by irradiation of seeds and other methods.
Education Extensive research is needed to find out necessity of nuclear energy in common transport like nuclear submarine and launching of satellite trough nuclear energy. Pakistan ha very limited facility for importing nuclear education. Facility of nuclear education is the need of the day and it should be set up at all universities
Training Training facility is available in PEACE but should concentrate on establishing good Institutes through out Pakistan.
WiN Pakistan It is a recent phenomenon in Pakistan. Awareness increased after the WiN Canada. meeting where sponsorship to participate was kindly sponsored by Canada. Currently there are 70 members registered with Win Global.
General Activities This is being done by the IAEA sponsored Regional Training Courses, Seminars and Conferences in Pakistan. A number of activities are in progress for awareness creation in general public and end users about the safety of the nuclear techniques as well as advantages Women are playing a very proactive
WIN Pakistan Future Need to organize WiN Pakistan as number of participants are increasing. Make conscious effort to involve more women. Organize the WiN Pakistan structure Develop structure and formalize an agenda. We hope to do it in near future.
