1 Course: GGU FI 382 Bank and Thrift Management Section: SF1 Day/Time: Monday, 6:50 PM to 9:30 PM Start/End: September 8, 2008 to December 15, 2008 Instructor: William C. Sarsfield Office Hours: By appointment, Post Office Box San Carlos, CA Telephone/Fax: {650} Goal: Introduction to the operation and measurements of performance of financial holding companies, bank holding companies both domestic and international, insurance firms, and investment firms including VC. The financial holding company, the entity managing and controlling banking commercial banking, international banking and finance, investment banking, venture capital, M&A activities, hedge funds, mortgage funds, to list only a few of the activities, has often been ignored by the academic community. That is no longer the case for these are the organizations in the epicenter of the worldwide financial crisis currently taking place. Financial holdings companies should not and can not be ignored. Without an understanding of activities, problems and opportunities in the financial service holding company, careers particularly in finance likely may be impeded. The goal is to offer a real world class, meeting real world bankers, and hopefully as a goal learning something about financial institutions that may be of value to students, including information on career opportunities. Reading Assignment: Class #7, #8, #9 - Text Chapters 13, 14 and 15 Class 7 (October 20, 2008): Asset management lending principles and practices will be covered including new lending quasi equity, high risk (payday, sub-prime), credit card, securitization. Review current problem and impact of sub-prime real estate loans / securitization. Class 8 (October 27, 2008): Liquidity Management, Management of Investment Portfolio / Securities. Liquidity needs and impact on asset makeup, investment portfolio management and deposits as a source of funds will be covered.

Term project presentation and outside guest speakers / lectures will take place at various times during the trimester, thereby necessitating adjusting the lecture schedule. There will be twelve formal lectures and the equivalent of two classes utilized in presentations and meeting with senior bank officers.
