2 SCHOLARS TEACHERS PRINCIPALS ADMINISTRATORS COMMUNITY PARTNERS Building Stronger Readers Together JPS Mission Jackson Public Schools, an innovative, urban district committed to excel-lence, will provide every student a quality education in partnership with parents and the community. formally One Jackson Many Readers is to prevent sum-mer learning loss and create reading growth. After a five year focused summer read-ing initiative in which One Jackson Many Readers motivated 30,000 readers in the City of Jackson to read 100,000 books. will continue this goal with the implementation of a new slogan and new summer reading titles. Goals have been changed to correlate with the new slogan. Goals of : Engage 30,000 readers with 100,000 books Carry on the culture of reading across the City of Jackson Provide support to scholars to enhance academic gains and future life successes. Students are required to read three books and complete a summary of each book read during the summer months. One required title and two books of choice. Citizens across the city of Jackson are asked to read at least three books. This makes it crucial for students to have access to summer reading books, receive help from reading tutors, experience high expectations from parents, and encouragement from their communities. Jackson Public Schools and its partners invited the entire com-munity to help reach the goal of 30,000 readers and 100,000 books read. Parents and citizens were asked to model reading and encourage their scholars to read. will continue a successful reading initiative and invite everyone to join this citywide reading movement and continue to Read On.

For maximum benefit and incentives, students are encouraged to read and complete reading logs for many, many books!

6 SCHOLARS TEACHERS PRINCIPALS ADMINISTRATORS COMMUNITY PARTNERS Building Stronger Readers Together Jackson Public School District Summer Reading Guidelines 2016 (Students in IB, APAC, and AP, please see additional information from your host school.) 3 All students are expected to read AT LEAST THREE BOOKS and complete a log for each. Log pages are provided in this booklet. If you prefer, you may use your own notebook or write logs on a computer, a page for duplication has been added for copying purposes. Each student reads and writes a log for the one book title required for the grade level he/she will enter in August Each student then chooses at least two additional books to read from any source on any topic and writes a log on each. After completing the minimum of three books, students are encouraged to continue reading and writing logs. The Reading Record of all logs is due in August when school starts. 3 Summer reading is fun and helps students grow academically. Additionally, students who read will earn positive results: Students who read and write logs beyond three books will be invited to participate in their school celebration in August. Students who continue to read and write logs beyond three books will earn additional incentives. Elementary students who read and log twenty or more books will be invited to the Summer Reading Party at the Mississippi Children s Museum (MCM) in September and may earn additional prizes. Middle and high school students who read and log twelve or more books will be invited to Summer Reading Celebrations/Events sponsored by the JPS District. 3 Students are encouraged to enroll in the summer reading program at any branch of the Jackson Hinds Library System (JHLS). Books read in the library program will count for JPS as well. Set a high goal and read lots of books this summer! 3 In August under a teacher s direction, students will complete either a written test or a project on the book required for their grade level and will receive a test grade. Projects are NOT to be completed over the summer. 3 Adults are invited to become JPS summer readers as well! Read at least three books, one selected from the required list. If Summer Reading Log is to be considered for school tally, all logs are due August 26, Students can also read and log books from myon Reader. Additionally, to encourage you to read, the adults around you are providing incentives as described below. Your whole family can sign up and read together. The Jackson Hinds Library System has partnered with JPS. The librarians know how to help you find books you like, fill out your logs, and keep your records. They often give out prizes to students who read and have a party in July for everyone who completes their program.

Read your book, either by yourself or with another person. If possible, reread parts that you especially like or that seem most important. 2. Think about your book. If possible, talk to another person about some or all of these questions: What scene in the book stands out in your memory? What was the main character like? Did the main character change during the book? Was there a problem and how was it solved? What would you have done if you had been in the story? What new thing did you learn in this book? Does the story remind you of something that happened to you? If so, how is your experience like the book? 3. Complete a Log Entry. A. Write the title and author of your book. B. In the box, use the ideas you thought about and talked about: a. Write a summary of the book that includes the beginning, middle, and end. OR b. Write your reflections on one or more of the questions listed in step 2. NOW YOU ARE READY TO READ ANOTHER BOOK! Sample Response Log
