As an architect with Chartered status or a student enrolled on one of the courses validated by the RIBA worldwide, your colleagues, clients and peers know instantly that you are committed to professional and educational excellence and that you are able to demonstrate exemplary ethical and professional standards. Ulrik Lauenbach, Chartered member How have we have raised the profile of outstanding architecture in 2016? Became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) agreeing to support and promote its principles on human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption, and co-founding a new international coalition to develop globally-recognised ethical standards in the property industry We accredited 163 new pieces of free learning material in the RIBA CPD Providers Network to support members professionalism and skills practices and members have access to nearly 1,100 high quality, rigorously-assessed pieces of CPD Launched the RIBA International Prize, which has 30 buildings shortlisted, with the winner announced in November 2016 Recognition on an international scale of excellence in research with a record number of 75 submissions from 5 continents for the President s Awards for Research. RIBA Role Models 2015: In 2012 Thomas was awarded the RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, documenting original research on informal livelihoods and recycling practices in six African cities. Be connected Being connected to clients, other architects, the public and the latest developments in the profession is invaluable, and RIBA membership makes this possible. We help you share knowledge through our network of local, national and international professionals, and stay in touch with colleagues around the world via our regional offices, branches and international chapters. And to ensure you re kept up to date, you ll be able to subscribe to regional newsletters, are able to attend regional events and be part of our wider community on social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Being a member of the RIBA has given me the opportunity to engage with other industry professionals along with a genuine competitive advantage given the institute s worldwide recognition. How have we connected the profession in 2016? Launched the new Working with Architects client survey, the first of its kind to be undertaken by the RIBA, to find out what construction clients think about architects and where architects add value, completed by 900 clients with the results published in Autumn 2016 We now have 68k members of the RIBA group on LinkedIn, 27k followers on Instagram, 117k followers on twitter and 58k followers on Facebook all interacting and benefiting from real-time updates on a daily basis.

4 RIBA Journal: The RIBA Journal magazine has been at the heart of the architecture profession for 120 years; educating, informing and inspiring generations of architects and designers. Be represented As one of our members you can be sure that you and your profession are being championed at the highest level by the RIBA. We are the champion and custodian of the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and best practice and we actively lobby government to influence change, encouraging feedback and opinions from you on policy and legislation. By working together and speaking as one voice we can build a robust and rewarding future for the profession and a society where architects and architecture are truly valued. It is important to have a very strong professional body which supports us and defends our rights and the collective ones in general. So we help you acquire as much of it as we possibly can by hosting CPD events, conferences and workshops right across the UK. What s more, we make unrivalled amounts of high-quality information and research available through the RIBA Journal (which is free to members), our RIBA Bookshops and the world-renowned RIBA Library. How have we have represented you in 2016? Published the Better Spaces for Learning school s report, which has led to the National Audit Office launching an enquiry that we hope will lead to an improvement in the schools we create for future generations Published the Space Standards for Homes report and Housing Matters: 20 Ways to Tackle the Housing Crisis to promote the creation of better quality housing and increase supply. The newsletters, free online magazine subscriptions and interactive website have been most helpful in gaining insights into alternative construction methods, acclaimed designs, and continuous practice development trends. Christelle De Villiers, Chartered member How have we kept you informed in 2016? The core CPD programme has delivered 10 events in 14 locations around England and Wales The RIBA CPD Providers Network delivered 770+ free seminars to over 5,500 delegates We have provided a comprehensive response on Brexit with weekly updates and support for our members. 5 Be inspired Inspiration can be the catalyst for outstanding creativity. We genuinely share your passion for architecture, so we develop thought-provoking exhibitions and cultural events to stimulate you and appeal to the wider public, raising awareness of, and interest in, the work of our profession. I love some of the events, talks and CPD s that I have attended from seeing Zaha receiving her Royal Gold Medal, the talk about nano architecture, architects who use film and animation to present their ideas to Peter Cook talking about the metamorphosis of drawings which give us inspiration. Keith Fernandez, Affiliate member How have we inspired the profession and the public in 2016? 40 Great British Buildings talks and tours are taking place around the country demonstrating examples of exceptional architecture The Brutalist Playground (nominated by Dezeen as one of the best installations in 2015) has been touring the UK, first in Aberdeen and now in Sheffield, showing the public and design community examples of outstanding creativity We are celebrating the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize with 10 RIBA Awards events across England and Wales, culminating in the Stirling Prize event in October We continue our successful collaboration with Channel 4 and Grand Designs for the House of the Year programme, which last series averaged 2.2m viewers, 30% higher than usual for that timeslot. One of the most beneficial aspects of RIBA membership is the support you receive. We provide you with guidance and help at every stage of your career, offering everything from student hardship funds and mentoring schemes right through to financial services packages. And in addition to all of this, you are able to enjoy discounts and special member offers too. I will recommend others to join. From my experience with other organisations it seems to me that the RIBA is really making an effort to improve standards and support its members. Launched the online BIM resource in June with guidance to support members and practices meet BIM level 2 requirements Launched a new online Mentoring Hub to extend the benefits of mentoring to every stage of professional life, bringing together the existing successful RIBA Student Mentoring scheme and Fluid Diversity programmes with new guidance on how to set up a mentoring scheme In Practice We have allocated approximately 200,000 in the form of grants and scholarships to support students, academics and practitioners conducting independent research in architecture.
