BA (Hons) Fashion Design course content Year One During Year One you will be introduced to the major aspects of the Fashion Design process, helping you to develop skills and confidence. Year One modules Design Process: Concept, Form and Image (100 credits) During this module you will have a series of lectures, tutorials and studio workshops which will introduce you to the design process. This will give you an understanding of research methods, exploration of design development, pattern cutting techniques, toile / garment manufacture procedures, all of which will inform your design decisions. A series of technical workshops will lead you through the essential stages of garment construction and sewing techniques. You will also be introduced to the skill of pattern cutting techniques, either by 2D flat approach or draping on the dress stand, which will enable you to translate your flat design drawings into 3D fashion products. During the final part of the module you will focus on experimentation with colour; a very important consideration in the research and design process. A design colour is often the starting point of a collection and can control the mood and season that you are designing for. Fabric sourcing is supported by workshops and through online information. Computer Aided Design (CAD) sessions will help to develop how to communicate your ideas, presentations and portfolio techniques. You will have an introduction to careers within the fashion profession which will be supported by CV and creative letter writing workshops. You will also have an introduction to trend forecasting which is supported by workshops and the opportunity to negotiate your own brief, introduce branding and develop ideas for a specific market level. During this module there is the opportunity for you to work on external projects, and develop your entrepreneurial skills through fundraising, financing and staging your own catwalk shows. lectures; briefings; demonstrations; studio workshops; studio supervision; tutorials; verbal and visual presentations; and

study visits. Assessment for this module is 100% coursework which will include: 2D research; design development; 2D / digital portfolio; 3D realisation; written evaluations; CV; and team working. Design, Culture and Context (20 credits) In this module you will be introduced to the power of images, objects and materials in visual and material culture. You will see how these elements are central to the way fashion, textile and knit designers represent, make meaning and communicate. This module will encourage you, through a series of tasks, to test your research, presentation and written skills and to be socially and culturally aware when considering your own environment and design decisions. Design, Culture and Context lectures; ideas days conference style events where you can choose sessions according to your interests; formative presentation events. Assessment for this module is through coursework. This will take the form of an individual essay and include team and individual presentations of research proposals. Year Two In Year Two you will focus on professional design practice. The projects you will work on integrate design with technology, and concentrate on the development of ideas through an understanding of the fashion industry. Year Two modules Design Context: Commerce, Technology and Innovation (100 credits) This module is designed to introduce you to industry structures and market levels, and their relationship to the outcomes of working in individual and team situations. You will have the opportunity to work with fellow Fashion Design students in design and business projects. These aim to build your team working, negotiation and entrepreneurial skills. You will think about the development of your future career through the development of employability initiatives and liaising with external bodies. In the first part of the module you will work as part of a team to produce a menswear collection to answer a live industry set brief. A second individual design brief will form

the second part of the module where you will begin to explore approaches to your final year. You will negotiate your own brief and then design a collection, producing one outfit and a range of detailed 3D samples. You will take part in lectures and tutorials which will explore methods for creative research, helping you to be innovative when developing concepts and designs. Global market and trend research and customer profile analysis will help you with design development and range planning. You will develop industry standard visual presentation skills for your portfolio, through traditional 2D and advanced CAD skills workshops. You will take part in a series of tutorials, business seminars and meetings with industry practitioner which will help you to develop professional verbal and visual presentation skills. A series of workshops will help you to translate your designs from 2D to 3D. These workshops will explore traditional and creative approaches to flat pattern cutting and draping techniques. During this module you ll also be given the opportunity to enter external competitions and develop your entrepreneurial skills through fundraising and staging your own catwalk shows. You ll also work with Final Year students to support their final collection realisation. Elective options include: entrepreneurship; ethical fashion; fashion forecasting; interior and lifestyle trends; journalism; online portfolio; styling for fashion; trend tracking; visual merchandising; and visual presentation. There is also the chance for you to work on external projects and develop your entrepreneurial skills through fundraising, financing and staging your own catwalk shows. briefings; lectures; demonstrations; studio workshops; studio supervision; peer evaluations; verbal and visual presentations; study visits. Assessment for this module is 100% coursework. This will take of the form of a body of individual and team work which will include the presentation of finished work including:

sketchbooks; portfolio; 3D product; technical and contextual research; and personal development planning within a reflective learning journal. Supporting research files will include technical, contextual and personal development planning, as well as a reflective learning journal. Design, Culture and Context 2 (20 credits) This module builds on the knowledge and skills you will have gained in Year One. In the first half of the year you ll focus on how the commercial context affects design and culture. You ll consider the crucial role played by design in the creation of desire in a trend-driven consumer culture, in an era of mass production and consumption. This will include consideration of key cultural issues motivating producers and consumers, such as the search for identity, authenticity and the need for responsibility and sustainability to make design a force for positive change. In the second half of the year you will focus on creating negotiated individual briefs in preparation for your final year project, with the choice of lectures, seminars and an inhouse symposium design to stimulate thinking about current cultural issues and developments in design, visual and material culture. Design, Culture and Context lectures; ideas days conference style events where you can choose sessions according to your interests; formative presentation events. Assessment for this module is through coursework. This will take the form of an individual research project and poster presentation. Final year In your final year you will negotiate your workload and determine a design brief. Final Year module Negotiated Fashion Design: Portfolio and Research Projects (120 credits) This module is year-long and within it you will complete a negotiated research project and a major design project. You will have a choice of how this is weighted, and be supported in making this decision through briefings and tutorials. For the fashion design project you will produce an extensive body of 2D and 3D work that will challenge your creativity through research, design development and design translation. This will include creative investigation into toiling, fabrication, print, garment construction / technology, CAD and design responsibility.

Your creative, practical and strategic skills will be developed through industry-led projects and national / international design competitions. This will identify your personal strengths, interests and professional direction. Also within the fashion project there is a further option to focus either on a catwalk collection or fashion product exhibition. The catwalk show allows you to develop your design signature look through four to six complete outfits. You will develop an understanding of the demands of the production process through networking with external specialists to ensure your vision is represented in a highly professional manner. The static fashion product exhibition will give you the opportunity to specialise in research and design for niche fashion markets and product type, such as tailoring, lingerie, functional sportswear etc. for the development if a brand identity to support a merchandised fashion range. You will produce 3D prototypes for the realisation of your concepts and have the opportunity to develop fashion promotion and communication material to a professional level. This option encourages collaborative opportunities and the development of networking strategies in relation to your produce and the communication of your ideas. With both fashion design project options you will demonstrate the creation and realisation of your own personal design direction. Awareness of attitudes and values towards design responsibility will be reinforced through your work, encouraging you to create accountable approaches to social and ethical issues surrounding the fashion business. Your research project will connect with the Design, Culture and Context modules from Years One and Two. You will explore a relevant aspect of design and / or the wider cultural and historical context. You will develop research questions and carry out research to explore the answers to those questions. You will have a choice how to present this research and how it is weighted against your fashion design project. This work will develop your skills in analysis, communication, presentation and independent thinking. It will also allow you to develop a professional level of understanding of the wider context for your design work. This module will challenge and develop your reflective skills and give you the opportunity to combine your skills of critical analysis and evaluation. It will also allow you to think reflectively about your own learning on the course, your strengths and aspirations, and the future direction of your career. briefings; lectures; demonstrations; studio workshops; studio supervision; study visits. Peer evaluation and verbal and visual presentations occur at stages through the module or at the end of projects, and provide an opportunity to reflect and receive feedback on your work. Negotiated Fashion Design project, either 80% or 65%

Regardless of the weighting you choose, you will be assessed through coursework including: 2D research; design development; 2D / digital portfolio; design rationale; 3D realisation; written evaluation; CV; and team working. Research Projects, either 20% or 35% 20% - You will complete a dissertation of 6,000 words. 35% - You will complete a project of 10,500 words in total, including a 6,000 word dissertation and 4,500 words for other outcomes.
