2 What is Waste Conversion? Waste Conversion is not a new concept. It is the rearrangement of a majority of carbon atoms to a valuable product. Conversion technologies convert material to: Energy (heat, electricity) Fuel (methane, ethanol, diesel) Chemical products (alcohol) Conversion technologies can be either Biochemical or Thermochemical Waste Management has invested in a broad range of conversion technologies over the years, including: Incineration/combustion operations (Wheelabrator Technologies) WM composting WM Plastics to Fuel Page 2

3 Overview of Waste Technology Sector There are 476 Technology and/or Project Development Companies Worldwide (H. Gershman, GBB, June 2014). 28 Aerobic Composting 106 Anaerobic Digestion 30 Ethanol Fermentation 117 Gasification 30 Plasma Gasification 31 Pyrolysis 63 WTE: mass burn, modular, dedicated boilers, and RDF 69 Others (agglomeration, autoclave, de- polymerization, thermal cracking, steam reforming, hydrolysis Of these,157 have made it to the demonstration or commercial phase Page 3

4 Commercial/Demonstration Scale Facilities There are roughly 157 Conversion Companies Operating at either a Commercial or Demonstration Scale: (H. 5 Technology Landscape Primary technologies to convert a waste-derived feedstock into another material fall broadly into three categories: physical, biological/chemical, and thermochemical conversion: Category Physical Biological / Chemical Thermochemical Technology Engineered Feedstock / Fuel Maceration and decontamination of wet organics Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) Mechanical Heat Treatment (MHT) / Autoclave Composting Anaerobic Digestion Fermentation Hydrolysis Combustion Gasification Pyrolysis Preliminary/Pre-processing technologies Conversion to final products: Compost Conversion to intermediate products: Syngas Sugars Primary conversion technologies should be distinguished from: a) Downstream or secondary technologies that convert an intermediate product such as syngas into a further product such as fuel (e.g., Fischer Tropsch catalytic conversion of syngas to diesel), and b) By-product treatment technologies (e.g., wet scrubbing of gases or treatment of leachate) Page 5
