1 May 2016 BSC Graduates: We re excited that you ve chosen to attend Bismarck State College s 76 th Commencement Ceremony! We look forward to sharing this special day with you and your family. Commencement Ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at the Bismarck Event Center (formerly the Bismarck Civic Center). The arena doors will not open for seating until 1:30 p.m. Parking around the Event Center will be free with the exception of the west parking lot. A map is attached. In addition to Commencement, BSC has enhanced the celebration by adding a variety of booths on the second floor of the Event Center. The BSC Bookstore will be selling an assortment of BSC apparel and gifts. The Dakota Nursing Program Student Nurse Organization will be selling roses as a fundraiser for their organization. Family and friends will be able to learn about programs we offer and upcoming events. We are honored that Major General (Retired) David Sprynczynatyk will be our Commencement speaker. General Sprynczynatyk recently retired from the North Dakota National Guard. In the back of the program we ve placed a QR code that, once scanned, takes your friends and family to the BSC Facebook page to find behind-the-scenes photos of the excitement as you and your fellow graduates prepare to enter the arena. 2 Commencement Instructions DATE: May 13, 2016 TIME: 2:30 p.m. (Please arrive no later than 1:15 p.m.) PLACE: Bismarck Event Center Enter through Door A5 (East side of building) We re very happy that you ve chosen to celebrate this important milestone in your life by attending Commencement! There will be no rehearsal prior to the ceremony so it is important that you arrive at the Event Center on time. We will have plenty of staff volunteers available to assist you. The following information should answer some of your questions. If you need any other information, please contact Kene Miller at or or Sue Lippert at or Parking Accommodations: Graduates: Graduates should enter through door A5 on the east side of the Civic Center. (A5 is the only door that will allow you to reach the east hallway for line-up.) Guests: Please let your guests know that they should enter the Event Center through the main entrance on the southwest side of the building. Parking is free in all lots except the one directly to the west of the main entrance. Parking will be $5.00 in that lot. Pre-Ceremony Line-Up (East Hallway): 1. Graduates need to collect their reader cards in the Graduate Check-In Room, located on the left as you enter the Event Center through door A5. Staff will be there to direct you. 2. Assistant Professor Kimberly Crowley or Associate Professor Earl Torgerson will read your name as you cross the stage to receive your diploma. They will be available in the Graduate Check-In Room to work with you on the correct pronunciation of your name. 3. If you are a Legacy graduate, you will need to stop in the Murdoch Room to pick up your cords. You are considered a Legacy graduate if you have a parent or grandparent who has graduated from BJC/BSC. 3 Bismarck State College Commencement Instructions May 2016 Page Two 4. After you pick up your reader card (and cords, if applicable), you will be directed to the east hallway. You will notice large signs on the wall indicating Bachelor of Applied Science, Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, Diploma and Certificate. Report to the area indicating the type of degree you will be receiving. Students will be lined up alphabetically within each of these groups for the processional and stay in this lineup throughout the ceremony. If you are receiving multiple degrees, you may pick the degree group you want to march in with. Please do not bring valuables (purses, cameras, coats, cell phones) into the Event Center. There is no security to protect these items. Processional: Faculty marshals will lead the processional. The only thing you will need is your reader card - a program will be provided for you on your chair. Remember to walk slowly and follow the lead of the marshals. You will be paired up with a fellow graduate as you enter the arena. Walk together do not race ahead or lag behind your partner. Once you reach your seat, remain standing (facing the audience) until asked to take your seat. Ceremony: Choir member graduates will enter the arena with all other graduates. They will not participate in the singing of the Alma Mater. They will join the choir after the student speaker is finished and return to their seats with the rest of the graduates after their performance. Wind ensemble graduates will be seated with the wind ensemble and will receive their degrees during the awarding time a marshal will escort band members to line-up. When Provost Carter says I present the 2016 graduating class at BSC, the following will happen: The student speaker will stand and move to the north end of the stage. Wind ensemble members will rise and a marshal will escort them to the stage. The first row of candidates will rise and proceed to the stage. Marshals will continue to release rows of graduates. Remember DO NOT LEAVE YOUR READER CARD ON YOUR SEAT! Photographers will be present to take your picture before you move across the stage. Workers will be on hand to assist you with the process. When you reach the top of the stage, hand your card to the reader assistant at the podium. After your name is read cross the stage.

4 Bismarck State College Commencement Instructions May 2016 Page Three You will be greeted and given your diploma by President Skogen. (Receive your diploma with your left hand, so you are free to shake with your right hand.) Continue across the stage shaking hands with the other dignitaries. Proceed carefully down the stairs when you reach the end of the stage. Representatives from the BSC National Alumni Association will be waiting on the floor to greet you and present you with a small token. You will be directed back to your seat. Please be seated. Following the closing remarks, your family and friends may join you on the main floor for photo opportunities and visiting. Suggestions: Gowns should be as wrinkle free as possible. Black or dark shoes are appropriate, if you have them. No flowers or other decorations should be worn on gowns or caps. Tassel should be worn on the right side of your cap when you enter the arena. Valuables should be left with family or friends. Cell phones should not be used during the ceremony. Be courteous to your fellow graduates and guests by refraining from talking during the ceremony.
