3 About LifeSkills 3 Welcome LifeSkills, created with Barclays, is a major new programme designed to give young people access to the advice, support and opportunities they need to get ready for the world of work. Engaging resources support young people in the classroom and beyond as they prepare for their future jobs, and thousands of work experience placements throughout the UK will bridge the gap between theory and practice and give students a taste of how their future could look. LifeSkills joins schools, students and businesses together to ensure young people have the best start possible to their working lives. Log onto and be part of it. 4 4 About LifeSkills LifeSkills: The facts LifeSkills is designed to help every young person aged develop the skills employers seek in new recruits. The programme is divided into three modules, which are: People Skills: introducing skills such as self-awareness and self-confidence and demonstrating how to use them Work Skills: helping students focus on their strengths, how they present themselves to employers and targeting the right jobs for them Money Skills: teaching students how to look after their money now and encouraging healthy financial habits for the future Elements include: Teacher-led resources help introduce the key themes to students aged 11-19, equipping them with a foundation of knowledge and understanding. All activities are curriculumlinked and have been developed with teachers and education experts. Fun and educational interactive content has been developed to support each module. It can be used to back up in-class learning or by young people in their own time. This is all hosted on the dedicated LifeSkills website which will also appeal to students aged 14 and over. Workshops are available to support in-school learning by giving detailed realworld examples, building students knowledge, skills and confidence. The range of sessions can be delivered by a LifeSkills volunteer. Work experience is a key part of LifeSkills year olds who complete LifeSkills in school will be eligible for work experience opportunities at Barclays and participating small and large businesses in the UK.

6 6 About LifeSkills What s available for schools? A comprehensive set of teaching resources, covering People Skills, Work Skills and Money Skills. The programme includes: teacher-led activities including lesson plans and whiteboard materials interactive online content for students volunteer-led workshops access to work experience opportunities which teachers can organise support for teachers organising work experience student work experience logs Times Educational Supplement (TES) webinars, providing information and support throughout the programme Teachers should visit to download interactive and ready-to-use teaching resources, tips and guides, and useful videos to give young people lots of ways to learn. Young people who have skills training such as CV writing or work experience earn up to 18 per cent more than those without*. *YouGov survey 2011 The content is great. I think the bite sized approach really works so that students can complete certain sections as they go along. I really liked the range of activities some reading, some videos, some activities etc. The range of information provided is excellent and I think it will help with getting students to really think about what the world of work is about. I have already signed up for a volunteer to come and talk to our year 10s in preparation for work experience. I think schools will really appreciate this input and support. The lesson plans are good. 8 8 About LifeSkills Bring an expert into the classroom LifeSkills volunteers can bring the workplace to the classroom and answer general questions students might have about starting work. They can also give first-hand experience of working in a current business environment and a fresh face can add an extra dimension to teachers planned sessions with students. Workshops cover the three modules and there are many to choose from, including: People Skills Overcoming challenges Thinking confidently Assertiveness Work Skills Finding employment CV surgery Types of interview Money Skills Making ends meet Managing a bank account What s on a payslip? Teachers can visit to request a volunteer.

9 About LifeSkills 9 Interactive resources LifeSkills provides students with direct access to a huge range of interactive digital content to work through either in school or at home. Whether students want to build up self-confidence or are not sure where to start with their CV, they can easily find tips and pointers. They are encouraged to consider their personal interests and characteristics, and then explore how these translate into job options. The interactive LifeSkills resources will develop some of the key skills young people need to help them to get where they want to be. Students will earn +points as they progress through the modules; after each key skill there are three questions get them right and points are added to the progress bar. Teachers can also search for nearby work experience placements for those who achieve 250 points.

10 10 About LifeSkills Stepping into the working world LifeSkills will make 50,000 work experience opportunities available for year olds. Barclays will provide at least 6,000 of these, and is encouraging businesses of all sizes across the UK to get involved. Work experience not only helps young people make a choice about their future jobs or career path, it adds value to their CV and could put them in front of a potential employer. As students complete LifeSkills modules, they ll also be better prepared for work experience opportunities as they ll develop their confidence and have a clearer understanding of what will be expected of them by an employer. How to book Teachers can reserve placements before completion of the modules. The eligibility criteria of the modules must be completed prior to the start of the students work experience placement Teachers will match the right roles to the right students and will apply on behalf of students this can be done at Reserving the placement will hide it from other viewers for seven days, giving teachers time to make arrangements with the business Career inspiration LifeSkills is also working in partnership with: plotr, a unique platform for year olds to explore, discover and be inspired by the breadth of opportunities open to them. plotr s mission is to inspire every young person about the world of work, through tailored articles, expert advice, employer profiles and interactive career worlds. Careersbox, which provides a free online library of careers-related films, news and information.

11 Offering work experience Business can help get the next generation ready for work. While in-school and online activities will help students prepare for their future beyond education, work experience opportunities are the key to bringing this to life. Businesses of any size can join the LifeSkills programme to deliver work experience opportunities for year-olds in their local area.
