Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand 9 th Edition Report Briefing
Report Description NSR s Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand study is the industry leading analysis of the most fundamental of all questions facing the commercial satellite market: What is the supply and demand for commercial transponders and capacity? What are the applications driving demand? What are the revenues generated by the lease of this capacity? To answer these questions, this study provides a wealth of data and analysis from the very top line global trends to highly detailed and granular assessments of supply and demand for eight separate applications in each of four different types of capacity for twelve individual regions. Supplemented by nearly 1,000 tables and charts within the integral client Excel data sheets, NSR s Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand 9th Edition provides the most comprehensive and detailed data and analysis available to the industry. Further, NSR has continually worked to improve the study and make the research within it more relevant and useful for the industry since its inception. NSR led the industry in introducing the assessment and forecasting of commercial services using High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capacity as well as being one of the first to make specific projections for growth in 3D channels within the video distribution and DTH markets. Consistent Methodology and Assessments In this 9th Edition, NSR maintains the improved segmentation of the applications served with commercial satellite capacity introduced in the prior edition of this study. On the video side of the business, NSR retains its video distribution, DTH, and video contribution & OUTV forecasts that have been the core of this study since its first edition.
On the data side of the business, NSR feels that the legacy telephony & carrier, enterprise data, broadband satellite access, commercial mobility, and government/military services application segments continue to be the best representation of the critical demand trends in the industry. Not only do the top line transponder and capacity demand assessments and forecasts for each region remain unchanged between this current edition and prior editions, but the data application segmentation introduced in the prior edition of this study allows NSR to more directly correlate its forecasts with the other major studies that comprise NSR s comprehensive library of market research into the commercial satellite industry. 36 MHz TPEs 7,500 6,000 4,500 3,000 1,500 Global Satellite Transponder Demand Ka Band Ku Band C Band 4.2% gain in leased transponders Gbps Global HTS Capacity Demand 85% gain in leased HTScapacity HTS Source : NSR Source : NSR Global Market Share of Leased C, Ku and Ka Band TPEs, Intelsat 29% SES 17% Eutelsat 10% Telesat 6% Others 38% Source: NSR The major change in this edition of the Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand is a much more succinct and concise presentation of demand trends in the industry. NSR undertook the reorganization of the presentation of the demand trends in order to improve the usability of the study and provide a more direct assessment of the bottom line trends in the market.

Executive Summary Commercial Satellite Market Overview C-band video distribution market strong globally, but concern on C-band backhaul migration to HTS/O3b capacity undermines long-term growth Video distribution is the largest of all C-band market verticals in the world and will rise from accounting for 37% of global C-band transponder demand in to 52% by. The same segment will also score by far the largest net C-band transponder demand gain, nearly 220 TPEs in the coming ten years, of all the C-band market segments around the world driven by solid growth in SD and HD channels plus emerging 3D channels for cable headends and other services around the world. The only other C-band market projected to see a net demand gain on a global basis is commercial mobility driven by maritime users adding new C-band demand globally in the coming ten years. Unfortunately, most other C-band market verticals are under pressure with video contribution & OUTV services projected to contract in the coming ten years, and the legacy telephony & carrier market will continue to be under pressure around the world due to fiber and undersea cable. Most important to the overall global C-band demand trend is the enterprise data market. NSR has long forecasted that the VSAT networking portion of this market would see C-band demand migrate to Ku-band and HTS capacity while IP trunking would fade in the face of fiber and undersea cable. The biggest change in the last year is that NSR now forecasts in its Wireless Backhaul via Satellite 6 th Edition study that C-band backhaul services will see some demand gains globally through to 2015, but then begin to slowly decline as backhaul services start to migrate to lower cost HTS and O3b capacity. Top global Ku-band markets are DTH, enterprise data, video distribution and commercial mobility NSR s latest forecast for the global Ku-band transponder market predicts that worldwide capacity demand will increase substantially between and. The most positive market vertical in the world will be DTH services followed by enterprise data services driven by expanding VSAT networking applications and video distribution services that are projected to chalk up a net demand increase largely on the back of new HD plus SD channels as well as specialized bouquets and growth in various free-to-air channels. Scoring the fastest rate of demand growth, the global commercial mobility market will pick up the next best net Ku-band transponder gain, and the gov/mil segment, mainly on the back of UAVs and mobility, will add additional Ku-band demand globally by. Beyond these five markets,
the remaining market verticals will see much smaller demand gains, like for broadband access and video contribution & OUTV services, while the global legacy telephony & carrier segment will see a small Ku-band demand contraction in the coming ten years. Widebeam Ka-band leasing limited to gov/mil, enterprise data and video contribution & OUTV It is currently NSR s best assessment that the majority of widebeam Ka-band capacity leasing will be for gov/mil services. The two main drivers for this leasing will be either national defense organizations seeking to move to widebeam Ka-band through commercial partnerships such as is the case with YahSat, Spacecom and Es'hailSat, or it will be gov/mil entities seeking commercial widebeam Ka-band capacity to supplement dedicated Ka-band government satellite systems such as the U.S. WGS network. The next most interesting opportunity will be using widebeam Kaband capacity as a substitute for Ku-band for the VSAT networking segment and in some unique cases IP trunking. Finally, NSR sees a niche opportunity to use widebeam Ka-band capacity for SNG services within the video contribution & OUTV market. Beyond these three applications, NSR is not yet forecasting widebeam Ka-band transponder demand to emerge for other market verticals. 36 MHz TPEs 10,000 8,000 6,000 4,000 Global C, Ku & Ka Band TPE Demand by Application Gov/Mil Broadband Access Telephony & Carrier DTH Commercial Mobility Enterprise Data Contribution & OUTV Distribution 2, Source : NSR Broadband satellite access to account for roughly 80% of global HTS leasing While the industry tends to first think of High Throughput Satellites (HTS) in terms of broadband access services, NSR clearly recognizes that HTS-provisioned satellite broadband access services are a high volumes/low margins business where a satellite service provider that can successfully compete against terrestrial broadband access services requires large amounts of very low cost capacity. This drives leasing of HTS capacity, especially in North America and Western Europe, and is why satellite broadband access services will generally account for about
80% of total global HTS capacity leasing in most years of the forecast period. Further, this same driver means that satellite broadband access services will by far see the biggest net HTS capacity demand gain over the ten-year forecast period. Global HTS Bandwidth Demand by Application 750 Gbps Gov/Mil Broadband Access Telephony & Carrier DTH Commercial Mobility Enterprise Data Contribution & OUTV Distribution Source : NSR Following broadband access in terms of HTS capacity demand requirements will be enterprise data services that are projected to score the next biggest net HTS capacity demand gain by. Part of this will be driven by VSAT networking services, yet an ever greater percentage (especially over the second half of the forecast period) will come from backhaul services as HTS capacity can more cost effectively serve the data requirement for 3G and 4G backhaul. Next in line will be the HTS-provisioned commercial mobility vertical mainly in the maritime, aeronautical and commercial land mobile services. Much of this market will be initially served by Inmarsat s Global Xpress service; however, Intelsat has already announced a number of mobility contracts including one with Panasonic Aviation for capacity leasing on its new EPIC HTS platform. In a similar line, NSR also projects that gov/mil services will generate the fourth largest demand gain for HTS capacity leasing between and. Beyond these, NSR can also see some additional HTS capacity demand emerging in different regional markets for various media services in the video distribution, DTH and video contribution & OUTV segments. Strong revenue growth projected for global satellite industry with net US$6.9 billion gain by The global satellite industry continues to score strong growth in revenues with NSR estimating that total industry revenues coming from leased commercial capacity increased by US$635 million between 2010 and taking into account revenues from both station-kept and inclined orbit services. Some of the best net revenue generators in the last year have come from expanding DTH services as well as growth in enterprise data services, mainly VSAT networking
and backhaul. Further, the gov/mil segment continues to grow strongly, and the industry sees as well rapid demand growth coming from the commercial mobility services vertical, especially in the maritime and aeronautical segments. In the coming ten years, NSR projects continued solid revenue gains coming both from classic C-, Ku- and widebeam Ka-band capacity leasing as well as emerging HTS services. NSR s current best estimate is that overall satellite industry revenues from leased capacity will increase by US$6.9 billion in the coming ten years. 11 Report Overview Staying on top of industry requirements In prior editions of this study, NSR led the industry in innovative market assessment methodologies by introducing a complete and detailed analysis of demand for High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capacity in parallel to the traditional C-band, Ku-band and widebeam Ka-band markets. NSR defines an HTS as any satellite or satellite payload that has at least twice (though usually many times more) the throughput of a traditional FSS satellite for the same amount of allocated frequency on orbit. These satellites can use any frequencies (e.g. Ku-band, Ka-band) to provision a service and almost exclusively make use of frequency reuse and multiple spot beams to greatly increase throughput and reduce the price per bit delivered. Further, the cost of the ground equipment/customer premise equipment for an HTS-based service should not be a barrier to HTS capacity being substituted for FSS capacity for any commercial satellite application assessed in this study. GASSD9 Applications and Regions Analyzed Source: NSR Then in 2010, NSR was the first to introduce a separate forecast of 3D channels in the video distribution and DTH markets, again illustrating its leadership role in the industry. This was followed by NSR undertaking a new application segmentation in for its assessment of the global satellite market. While keeping the same video and media segments of video distribution, DTH and video contribution & OUTV services as used in previous years, NSR completely reorganized its segmentation of the more data-centric and heritage voice markets. The main driver behind this re-segmentation was to pull out and specifically forecast certain applications
like commercial mobility and government/military services that, ten years ago, were too small to treat as independent markets. The major change in this edition of the Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand study is a much more succinct and concise presentation of demand trends in the industry. NSR undertook the reorganization of the presentation of the demand trends in order to improve the usability of the study and provide a more direct assessment of the bottom line trends in the market. However, this implied no change to NSR s existing methodologies, and NSR continues to segment the commercial market into eight different applications and conducts its detailed analysis for twelve separate regions.
