AS/A2 English Literature (WJEC) AS/A2 English Language (AQA/A) AS English Lang/Lit (Edexcel) AS/A2 Media Studies (OCR) AS/A2 Film Studies (WJEC) GCSE English (AQA/A) Access English and Skills 5 sets 10 sets 7 sets 7 sets 3 sets 4 sets 3 sets A2 and AS level English Language The College has offered the A level English Language course since its early days. It is a very popular option, attracting students across the whole ability range, and it has excellent pass rates and significantly positive value added scores for the past few years. Teaching covers the theoretical areas of Mode and Interaction, Sociolinguistics, Language Development and Language Change, as well as developing analytical and writing skills. A2 and AS level English Literature A level English Literature is a popular option with a consistent record of success above national average. A variety of teaching styles is employed and students are actively encouraged to read and discuss novels, plays and poetry gaining first-hand experience wherever possible of writers, staged productions and live readings. Theatre visits are regularly made to London, Stratford, Manchester and Birmingham. Local theatres in Worcester, Cheltenham and Bristol offer opportunities to see performances and to take part in workshops related to texts currently studied. Literature students have opportunities to attend courses and day/evening lectures at various universities. AS English Language and Literature This is a more recent addition to our portfolio which has become a popular and successful course. The AS course involves the study of spoken and written language, and has a strong emphasis on creative writing which is further developed at A2. GCSE English Language The department takes very seriously the aspirations of one year GCSE students, some of whom have started on A level courses or hope to start A level courses the following year. There has been a good record of success above the national pass rate for Sixth Form College re-take classes.

4 A2 and AS Media Studies The Media Studies staff currently teach both theoretical and practical components and integrate these appropriately. Students are introduced to the skills and insights necessary to the production of their own creative practical work (stills images and the moving image), using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. TV Drama and the Music Industry are focus areas of study for the AS course. Trips to conferences and the cinema are regularly offered. A2 and AS Film Studies This course is a combination of practical creative work and academic study involving film analysis and exploration of business, historical, social and cultural contexts. The creative work involves the use of Adobe Premiere editing software. Regular trips to the cinema are organised. Adult Courses (Access to H.E. Skills and English) The department offers an English One Year Option for mature students on the jointly run Access/Foundation course. Students are encouraged to take part in theatre trips and other activities on offer to year old students. The department also plays a major role in delivering the OCN Skills qualification for Access students to achieve both GCSE equivalence (level 2) and level 3. Students have regularly gained access to Higher Education courses following their success at the College. English and Media is a large, successful and friendly department, committed to supporting students at an individual level to achieve the very best they are capable of. Sharing resources and strategies is a key element of the department s ethos as well as extending the student experience through extra-curricular activities and encouraging individual research and interests. The Department has been awarded a Grade 2 in recent self-assessment reviews and inspections. Facilities and Resources For English courses the department has a suite of five teaching rooms where audio, video, OHP and computer equipment is readily available to exploit the extensive stock of teaching materials. The department has its own staff workroom. Department computers link to the College network and have and Internet access. The College Learning Resources Centre is well-stocked with study aids in the forms of texts, critical works, reference books, DVDs and computers for student use. Learning Resources staff liaise closely with department staff. There is also an English department literature library of DVDs and language resources are available on open access to students.
