2 Apple ID For Students Parent Process On the first day of school, your child will be receiving an ipad which he/she will use daily for educational purposes. Each device requires a unique Apple ID. Each student is required to have his/her own Apple ID to use in association with their device. The process is different based on the age of your student. Students 13 years and older If your child is 13 years or older, they will create their own Apple ID using their new school-based Google Apps account and school issued password for their Apple ID. This helps to make it easier to remember and also allows school personnel the ability to more easily assist them with Apple ID login issues, should they arise. Students 12 years and under If your child is 12 years of age or under, you, their parent, will create their Apple ID using the steps outlined below. It s important to understand why this program is in place. In 1998, the federal government passed the Children s Online Privacy Protection Act. This legislation makes it illegal for companies to gather data or personal information of children under the age of 13. To comply with this law, Apple created the Apple ID for Students program putting parents in control of their child s Apple ID. These Apple IDs created under this program do not collect any personal information or data on children under the age of 13. 3 The Apple ID for Students process In the next series of screenshots, you ll find the process for creating your child s Apple ID: The from Apple If the address in Infinite Campus is correct, you ll receive an from Apple with a subject of Apple ID for Students--Parent/Guardian Information. Occasionally, this ends up in your Junk or SPAM filter so be sure to check them if you do not receive the Apple . 4 This is the body of the you ll receive from Apple. This provides information about the Apple ID for Students program and additional information including the Parent Guide. About ⅔ of the way down, you ll find a section called Creating an Apple ID. In this section, there is a link to the online consent form (where you ll create the Apple ID) and a temporary password. If you are copying and pasting this temporary password, be sure there are no spaces accidentally added to the end of the password when it s copied. Click on the online consent form link and you ll be brought to Apple s website to create your child s account. Continued on next page...

5 ! Creating the Apple ID On this initial screen, enter (or paste) the temporary password from the you received from Apple. Click Get Started.! The name and birth date will be filled in. If changes need to be made, make them here and use the password that was sent to you previously by the school district, for your child s Apple ID. Create the password for your child. Use osd and the school network password as you received in the mailing to your home. Ex. osdrq3n5t (osd all lowercase). This will make it easier for your child to remember and for us to help them if they forget.

6 ! Creating the Apple ID (continued) Scroll down to see the next section of the form. Choose security questions that will be used if your child needs to reset their Apple ID password. Be sure to keep them simple enough for your child to remember but difficult enough so they cannot be guessed. Creating the Apple ID (continued) Continuing to scroll down in the will bring you to the policy section. Here you re asked to read over and agree to the terms and conditions and the Privacy Policy. The Privacy Disclosure check box will become visible after reading the entire policy. Agree to all and click Create Apple ID.

7 ! On the following screen you will see your student s Apple ID(your.child@oceansideschools.org) has been created and is ready for use. However, there is still one VERY important final step.

8 You will soon receive two s from Apple; a verification and an informational . PLEASE respond to the verification as soon as possible. If you wait too long the verification will expire and you will need to request a new one. Open the with the subject Please verify the contact address for yourchild@oceansideschools.org. Click on the Verify Now link found in the body of the . After you click the Verify Now link in the you will be required to enter your child s new Apple ID and password. Once the information is entered click the Verify Address button. When verifying, please make sure you enter your child s newly created Apple ID username and password in the fields provided (not your own).

9 Congratulations! You have completed the Apple ID creation process. Your child may now receive the ipad on the first day of school. School and district personnel will assist your child with setting up his/her Apple ipad. Please be sure your child knows his/her Apple ID and password.
