2 Foreword by the Rector With this leaflet we would like to provide you with an overview of the developments that took place at the University of Innsbruck in As the numbers show, while we were acting in an environment that was challenging and increasingly competitive at the international level, the year was very successful. Growing internationalism has been a key factor again in 2015: 39 percent of both our student and faculty members were citizens of other EU countries or from third countries, and 72 percent of our publications in Web of Science journals were co-authored by international scientists. This international exposure earned the University of Innsbruck the 11 th rank worldwide in the relevant section of the Times Higher Education Ranking and the Leiden Ranking. Numerous initiatives aimed at increasing cooperation, which the University of Innsbruck jointly initiated with partner schools within the framework of Campus Tirol or the European regional program Tyrol South Tyrol Trentino, as well as internal measures such as establishing a project promoting dialogue between society and the academic world ( Förderkreis ) and infrastructure projects all ensure a bright future for the University of Innsbruck. 10 Universität Innsbruck Universität Innsbruck The University of Innsbruck was founded in 1669 and is the biggest and most important research and educational institution in western Austria. Today it is comprised of more than 28,000 students and 4,500 staff and faculty members. 16 faculties provide a broad spectrum of programs in all fields of study. Academics teach and research in the diverse scientific fields of humanities, science, economic and social sciences, theology, law, architecture, engineering and teachers' training. Five major research areas strengthen and sharpen the profile of the University s research branch: Alpine Space Man and Environment Academics at seven faculties study human influences and their impacts on the Alpine ecosystem and the role of the Alpine space in cultural exchanges between north and south. Research is aimed at developing strategies for the sustainable utilisation and development of the Alpine Space. Cultural Encounters Cultural Conflicts The fate of humanity has always been determined by cultural encounters and conflicts. It has become indispensable for the modern world to understand their causes and effects. Studying these topics in an interdisciplinary approach has been a longstanding tradition at the University of Innsbruck. Center for Molecular Biosciences This integrative and multidisciplinary research and teaching center focuses on the investigation of the structure, function and interaction of biological macromolecules and small molecules that are relevant for cell growth, metabolic activity and development. Physics Physics is not only the scientific foundation for our understanding of nature but also the basis for technological innovation. Scientists of the University of Innsbruck have built many international networks in astrophysics, astroparticle physics, ion and applied physics as well as quantum physics. Scientific Computing Today complex scientific questions can be observed and simulated in detail by using highly sophisticated mathematical methods, innovative computer models and new supercomputers. All research activities in the IT sector and e-sciences are concentrated in this research area. Additionally, there are almost 40 Fields of Research and 4 interdisciplinary Research Platforms with various faculties collaborating.
