1 ANNA BAUMGART Born in 1966 in Wrocław, lives and works in Warsaw. Video artist, author of performative actions, installations, sculptures and theatre set design. She analyses how the media shape visual memory and manipulate the image of history. Hence, her press photography-inspired cycle of figurative sculptures, and her lingiustic sculpture in the former Warsaw ghetto, reflecting exclusion from discourse, silence, omission. Her video Fresh Cherries lays bare the cultural structure of shame, tackling shame of the awareness of the status quo the price for which the community feels better. The work is for hire and travels to all places where cultural taboos or unsolvable problems exist. This ephemeral light anti-monument has first appeared in Warsaw at the place of the former wooden footbridge merging small and large ghetto, where the Poles were confronted with the Jews imprisoned in the ghetto. The memory of being a mute witness to genocide and then in the 1968 to the exodus of the remaining Polish Jews forced to leave the country by communist government lays at the basis of Polish-Jewish relations. Elypsis merges all taboos and excluded narratives and discoursed.

15 Anna Baumgart / video The Conquerors of the Sun, min, Ed AP The Conquerors of the Sun is an artistic-research project. Baumgart invited a historian of the avant-garde, who was to evaluate with academic methodology the artist s hypothesis related to a propaganda train packed with works of art, sent from revolution-stricken Russia to Berlin around Their cooperation resulted in an installation embracing a mockumentary film and a historical fiction book. The project should be treated as a continuation of La revolution n est pas un diner, where Baumgart analyses the de-politicisation of Polish avant-garde. Drawing on Godard s La Chinoise she attempts at a critical investigation of the political iconosphere of France and Poland of the 60s, juxtaposing the fascination of Parisian youth with the politics of the communist China with the resistance of Polish intelligentsia. She broaches the collective fascination with icons and the battle of symbols.. 16 Fresh Cherries, min + Appendix 10 min, Ed AP Anna Baumgart / video Anna Baumgart s film project was created for the exhibition at the Art Centre in Falstad, Norway location of a German concentration camp during the Second World War. Mostly Russians, Serbs and Poles were detained here. Baumgart s film merges the style of a false documentary, documentary, para-theatrical staging and a record of Hellinger s Constellations. The main film is accompanied by Appendix, a sort of making of and an extension of the thread related to prostitution at the camp. The video Fresh Cherries pertains primarily to the phenomenon of stigmatisation and hierarchisation of the victims of the Second World War, which shapes the image of the war in the eyes of the younger generation. The tabooisation of prostitution at concentration camps as forced labour is based primarily on the common conviction concerning the voluntary character of the choice of women recruited to Sonderbau (the camp public house, also known as puff ). In the post-war discourse, discrimination of women forced to become prostitutes was common and consisted in depriving them of the victim status. The suffering of these women did not come to an end the moment the camp was liberated in many cases they were completely eradicated from common consciousness. From a broader perspective, Baumgart s work also pertains to the phenomenon of trauma and ways of dealing with it. The film was selected for Videonale 13 in Bonn. EXHIBITIONS 2011 Videonale 13, Kunsmuseum, Bonn EMAF, Osnabrück LOOP, Barcelona (prize for the video Fresh Cherries presented by LOKAL_30) Videobrasil, International Electronic Art Festival, Sao Paulo 2010 Falstad Art Project, Falstad Center, Norway DKF Muranów, screening and debate, Muranów Cinema, Warsaw Films Not Only About Love, screening and debate, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw Watch Docs, screening and debate, Kino Lab, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw Fresh Cherries Around The Video Oeuvre Of Anna Baumgart, Galeria Arsenał, Poznań PUBLICATIONS Falstad Kunst 2010 catalogue, Falstad, Norway, 2010 Dorota Jarecka: W imieniu pani B., w obronie pani W., Gazeta Wyborcza, Katarzyna Bojarska: Responsability for the Story, Dwutygodnik, 41 / 2010
17 Anna Baumgart / video Supplement to Piece on Mother and Motherland by Bożena Keff, min, Ed AP The video was made specifically for the exhibition My Mother Is Not Holy (Bunkier Sztuki, Cracow, 2008, curators: Anka Sasnal, Martyna Sztaba) inspired by Utwór o matce i ojczyźnie [Piece on Mother and Motherland] by Bożena Keff. The work revolves around the dance of two women both in white dresses. They alternately pull closer and push away one another. This brings to mind a struggle of two bodies that are both willing to dominate. One of the exquisite elements of this formally refined film is the composition with the window/door in the upper right corner of the frame. The women climb on one another to the hole, as if they wanted to jump out. It turns out that the window is really a door, so they can go through and easily come back. The escape is not ultimate, it might be just a joke, a power struggle or a warning. Baumgart presents the scenes of combatting traumas, impotence, one s own shadow and the past. EXHIBITIONS 2010 Films Not Only About Love, screening and debate, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw 2008 My Mother Is Not Holy, Bunkier Sztuki, Cracow PUBLICATIONS Aleksandra Jach: Broń z arsenału języka. 18 Anna Baumgart / video Ecstatics, Hysterics and Other Saintly Ladies, min, Ed AP The work was premiered during the exhibition Collection of Shameful Gestures. Birgit Brenner / Anna Baumgart at the Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw. It is the first of Anna Baumgart s staged films, marking a new direction in the artist s video oeuvre, which found its continuation with, among others, Fresh Cherries. Ecstatics, Hysterics and Other Saintly Ladies is a story of self-aggression, female fears of loneliness, lack of acceptance, intimate rituals carried out at home. Event though the scenes of self-aggression are staged here, they are taken from real life. In conversation with Agata Jakubowska, Anna Baumgart said: I m tempted by the possibility of redefining the notion of hysteria, the transformation from a word that offends into a compliment. For me hysterics sounds interesting, it s a synonym of a creative approach of women to the world, a rebellious or even revolutionary stance. Something that feminism has already discovered and analysed on the basis of the 19th century hysteria it s a sort of self-art it has never been accepted in the social consciousness. EXHIBITIONS 2007 Global Feminism, Brooklyn Museum, New York 2005 Ecstatics, Hysterics and Other Saintly Ladies, Galeria Potocka, Cracow Ecstatics, Hysterics and Other Saintly Ladies, PGS, Sopot 2004 Collection of shameful Gestures, Anna Baumgart and Brigit Brenner, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw PUBLICATIONS New Phenomena in Polish Art after 2000, eds. 19 True? (The Cranes Are Flying), 2001 ca. 3 min, Ed AP Anna Baumgart / video Anna Baumgart uses the strategy of found footage to become the heroine of the renowned soviet film by Mikhail Kalatozov The Cranes Are Flying from Tapping into the potential offered by the technique, the artist replaces the actress s face with her own. The video, lasting less than three minutes, presents the scene of a dramatic quarrel between two lovers. Their passion cannot be fulfilled he is in love with the fiancée of his own brother, who fights at the front. Viera rejects the feeling screaming niet, niet, niet. Is that not the peak of girlish dreams of being adored and desired by men? Yet the act of fitting one s own face into a landmark motion picture also makes the dreams of fame, beauty and attraction come true. Baumgart critically analyses the impact of the media on the imagination. True? is a significant work in the Polish history of art. It was presented at numerous group and individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad. The cycle comprises two parts The Cranes Are Flying and Teddy Bear.
