1 Exercise 10, Chapter 8, Pronouns (Handbook 62-83) I. General Questions 1. Explain why pronouns present more challenges than nouns do in the nominative and objective cases. 2. Although nouns add an apostrophe to form their possessive case, most pronouns do not. How do most pronouns change to show their possessive case? Only two types of pronouns add an apostrophe for possession. Name them. 5. Predicate pronouns are selected from what case (nominative or objective)? 6. Pronouns serving as direct objects or indirect objects come from what case (nominative or objective)? 7. If your boss asks who is willing to work overtime for a large bonus, would you shout me or I? Justify your choice. 8. Explain why we have two singular demonstrative pronouns (this and that) and two plural demonstrative pronouns (these and those)? 9. Would you say the two people getting married are in love with each other or one another? Explain the difference in usage between these two reciprocal pronouns. 1

2 10. Are interrogative pronouns usually the subject of the sentence, rarely the subject or always the subject? 11. Will a sentence still make sense if an intensive pronoun is left out? Why or why not? 12. Pronouns ending in self in the singular and selves in the plural should never be used unless there is a clearly established what? 13. Are the indefinite pronouns all, any, none, some, most and such singular, plural, or can they be either singular or plural? 14. Relative pronouns always should be placed as close as possible to what other word(s) in a sentence? 15. Are the relative pronoun which and its verb is necessary in the following sentence? Explain how you can make the determination. The police station, which is a converted gymnasium in Fargo County, also serves as a meeting place for community groups. II. Identify the designated pronoun in each of the following sentences. 16. A relative pronoun introducing a nonessential dependent clause (also include the nearest word to the right of the pronoun): She is the officer who hired me, but Dr. Rathbone, who is her boss, gave me a good recommendation. 2

An indefinite pronoun that can be either singular or plural depending on its antecedent: The personnel director said most of the job applications she receives are impressive, but a few are disorganized. 19. A personal pronoun, nominative case, second-person singular (also include the nearest word to the right of the pronoun): You should have said, "I am giving the assignment to you" instead of presuming that I would write it. 3

Then tell why the word in parentheses or brackets would be incorrect if used She said to give the tickets to whoever (whomever) wants them "That's a decision for you and me [I] to make together," the vice president for public relations said "Your suggestion is interesting," the director of advertising said, "but I don't understand its [it's] desired effect." 7-8. "I ordered both him [he] and the defense attorney to give closing statements Thursday, Judge Paxton L. Swaggart said The Detroit Tigers won their (its) last eight games of the season. II. List the pronoun requested in each of the following sentences. 11. The singular demonstrative pronoun used to refer to something distant. 12. The relative pronoun that shows possession. 13. The personal pronoun that is spelled the same whether it is used as a singular or as a plural in the objective and nominative cases. 14. The relative pronoun most frequently used to refer to animals. 4

List the relative pronoun. 2. List the antecedent of the relative pronoun. 3. List the function (subject, direct object, predicate noun, etc.) of the relative pronoun in its own dependent clause. 4. Is the dependent clause essential or nonessential? 5. Does the relative pronoun need the singular verb was or the plural verb were? II. Use each of the following pronouns in a complete sentence and underline the pronoun being emphasized. 6. personal (any personal pronoun used as an adjective) 7. interrogative 8. demonstrative (singular to point out something near) 9. reciprocal (referring to three or more people) 6

Correct the noun-pronoun agreement problem in the following sentence: The professor said, "I want everyone to bring their book to class Thursday." 2. When one part of a compound subject is preceded by either or neither and the other part of the compound subject is preceded by or or nor, how do you determine whether to use a singular or a plural verb? 3. Explain why almost every pronoun (especially personal pronouns such as he, she, it and they) must have a clearly established antecedent? 4. Write a sentence containing a compound subject, one of which is singular and the other plural. Precede the first subject with either and the second with or. 5. Why should the plural subject always be placed after the singular subject in the sentence described in No. 4? 6-7. Write a sentence containing a noun-pronoun agreement problem, and write another sentence with the problem corrected Explain what the noun-pronoun agreement problem is in all three of the following examples. What is the solution to the problem? "I think it is about time, don't you?" the editor said. It's going to be a beautiful day, according to the weather report. 8

9 "I think it would be best for you to finish college before taking a full-time job," the student's professor advised. 10. Correct the noun-pronoun agreement problem in the following sentence: The University of Hawaii's volleyball team will play their season opener Saturday. 9

10 Exercise 14, Noun-Pronoun Agreement (Handbook 84-89) Rewrite each of the following sentences to correct the noun-pronoun agreement problem. Then explain what the problem is in each sentence Either the city editor or his assistant will have to change their vacation schedule so both will not be absent at the same time Neither the vice president nor the graphic artists lost his job State law requires every absentee voter to have her ballot postmarked before June The Thundering Herd football team is playing in their new stadium Photographers must keep your equipment in the designated area of the courtroom, the judge warned. 10

11 Exercise 15, Noun-Pronoun Agreement Contact the sports editor of a local or a regional newspaper or the sports director of a local or a regional television station and ask whether his or her organization uses team nicknames such as Jazz, Heat and Herd as collective singulars or as plurals.
